Xbox Live Gold Pricing is Changing starting November 1st, 2010!

http://majornelson.com/archive/2010/...scription.aspx

Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same. We’re confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry.

However, we do want to thank our loyal members and give you the opportunity to lock in your current price with an additional discount, so now would be a good time to renew your subscription.
Current Price:
1 Month: $7.99
3 Months: $19.99
12 Months: $49.99

New Price:
1 Month: $9.99
3 Months: $24.99
12 Months: $59.99

Now this was unexpected. I better grab a couple more Xbox Live 12 month cards the next time they are cheap.

And here every other member of the gaming press has been saying Live needs to go free for the last 30 years.

Not happy to have to pay more, but ultimately it's not that big of a deal to me.

MS will let you renew for $40 if you already have a Gold subscription:

Amazon is limiting people to one card purchase per month. Or, at the very least, they are limiting ME to one card purchase per month. I tried to buy two cards at once, and it told me I could only get one.

Couple that with the rumored news that companies are now researching business models to charge gamers extra to play each game online.

Just got an email from XBL touting the price increase."This holiday, Xbox LIVE is adding new Gold features, including ESPN and Video Kinect, with Hulu Plus coming on Xbox LIVE in 2011."

Re: Xbox Live Gold Pricing is Changing starting November 1st, 2010!

At $30, it was a rip-off (for my purposes, mind you) but I've put up with it up under the illusion I was getting a deal.

After this, I'm pretty much done with Live Gold. I rarely used it, so it's dumb to keep it going. Online gaming on the PS3 and PC is free. Online gaming on the Wii, DS and PSP, although mostly useless, is still free. Netflix on the Wii, PS3, PC and on most DVD/BD players on the market now is free (no extra past your subscription fee, of course). Other than (currently) being better populated over the PS3 network, what are you paying for? ESPN3? Deal of the Week? Really? Pay $60 a year to save $5 on a six month old XBLA game or save $2 on DLC that would have just been part of the game out of the box last generation?

I'm sure the value is still there for Halo and Call of Duty players, Rock Band too, but it's the biggest rip-off in video gaming for somebody that only plays online occasionally. I spent $30 last year to play Left 4 Dead for a few weeks and Bioshock 2 for a few weeks, both I could have gotten on PC and played for free.. without sub-30FPS visuals and a superior control method.. AND the games would have been $10 cheaper a pop.

Edit: Not to mention all the added content L4D/L4D2 gets for free on PC versus paying for on Xbox.

why not just buy 2 or 3 cards from amazon and add them all at once???

Also, what if you have a card that was bought at 49 and add it after the price increase?

That makes it sound like we get Hulu Plus, not just "access" to subscribe to Hulu Plus. Such wishful thinking...

You never know. MS could have worked out a behind the scenes deal for it... but yeah, mostly wishful thinking.

That's what I'm saying, Amazon will only let me purchase one card. It said "you can only purchase one of this item per month" or something to that effect.

There's deals on $30 1 year subs every other month it seems, so this news doesn't really bother me.

I'd expect those same deals will be $40 now (or soon enough).

It ws $30 at Dell.com almost 2 weeks ago. It'll be back again and when it does I'm gonna pounce on that deal like a fat kid at a buffet.

Re: Xbox Live Gold Pricing is Changing starting November 1st, 2010!

This is a pretty crappy thing for them to do. Most likely to pay for ESPN (most of your cable bill does) a app/service that I won't even use. I will probably be making the transition (slowly) to the ps3; I bought two $30 cards XBL last year so I'm in till feb 2012 or so.

If Hulu Plus is included in that then they need to say that NOW instead of letting the internet tear them apart.
