Really all this game needed was a proper means of fast travel. Not the garbage that's in it now. If I could fast travel to and from towns/camp, I would load it back up and finish at least the story. Especially after playing AC Odyssey, no way I could sit through all the horse riding.

There is fast travel to towns, but not back to camp. It's not great, especially in the latter part of the game where missions are out in the middle of nowhere. Too many times I would be headed to a mission, fast travel to the closest town, ride over there, and the mission time had expired so I had to set up camp until the next day. So dumb.

I know. I unlocked it as soon as I could because I thought it would be actually useful. But every time I had a mission where I was brought to some obscure area and dumped there with no quick means back to camp or town I turned the game off.

Agreed with all of you, i'm still slowly making my way through this and on Chapter 6 but the travel in the game is enough of a put off that I haven't been playing it every night like other games. A simple quality of life change to at least fast travel between towns and camp in both directions would have been a significant improvement.

I guess if the main story mission is your only goal in this game, I could see why fast travel is so important. If everyone just fast traveled everywhere they’d miss stranger missions, all the odd Easter eggs, the random encounters and a lot of animals for hunting.

Not everyone enjoys doing that after ever single mission though. I like to decide if I want my time spent going through story or enjoying background stuff. This game doesn't let you concentrate on story missions without a ton of downtime, galloping around.

I've done a lof of side missions, stranger missions, and some random encounters but it still doesn't mean there are times where i'd like to just get on with the main missions. But yeah, I imagine Rockstar wants to force people to experience and do all the other things; I wish they had the option though.

Finished. I thought it was an amazing experience. There are things to criticize, but how anyone can't appreciate this game is beyond me.
My wife usually yells at me to "turn that crap off!" RDR2 had her sneaking into the room to watch. One night she even asked me if I was going to play because she wanted to know what was going to happen.
It was like a TV mini-series I got to participate in.

The reason why I've always hated side missions is because its mostly travel with little to no pay off and your always left way out in the middle of nowhere. I stopped doing them altogether, every time I hear "hey Mister" I say nope and keep on riding lol.

Sadly, I have to agree. I was really looking forward to playing this game but ended up quitting after about two weeks. I might pick it up again sometime when I have like a week off, but as it stands the game just frustrates me with the lack of fast travel...I know technically you can later get it and fast travel to towns, but there are so many remote areas you have to ride your horse to...And half the time something goes wrong and some jackass "posse" kills me and I have to start back from square one...

Don't step on some rabid squirrel's toes and no posse. In all seriousness, people really do try and get in your way in this game and then you are the wanted one. Also, shooting it out with people that assault you first often ends in some stranger witnessing from a distance and heading off to look for the law. Then you have to chase them down and start the cycle of death and hope it ends with nobody watching.

Yep. I posted this much earlier when I started playing but I ended up having to take out a whole homestead and have a bounty all because my horse slightly ran into their family dog outside. Dog started attacking me, guy pulled out a gun, next thing I knew I was walking through a bloodbath of all their dead bodies.

That's my point, too. I don't intentionally go looking for trouble, but it seems extremely easy to catch a bounty, even if you completely try to avoid whatever situation you've just ran into. And like the previous poster said, usually there's a convenient witness and then you have to track them down and hope they don't run into yet another witness who you also have to track down...It's ridiculous...And, yes, I've also experienced instances where my horse accidentally runs into someone and all of sudden I'm in a shootout I never intended to be in...

I went to a post office and hitched my horse. The horse next to us started to get frantic, kicking and bucking, and blocked me in. I was finally able to get around it to pay off my bounty when I came outside to get on my horse that same horse kicked me for no reason. So I got up, walked over slowly trying to calm it down, then promptly punched it in the face. Some jackass saw me, cried animal cruelty, and ran off for the law. I chased him down, tackled him right in front of the Sherrif's office, up came the options to threaten or beat him, and six guys started shooting me. Dammitttttttt!

Saint Denis is the worst for that. All I want to do is sell a pelt to the trapper, two minutes later I'm in a shootout with the cops at the docks.

Funny, St Denis is where I was in the story when I put the game down.

Re: Red Dead Redemption 2 —> 10/26/18

Last night I helped a woman trapped under a dead horse on the road. She asked for a ride home to Saint Denis and as soon as I got to the town I bumped my horse into another rider. I wasn't even going fast but his horse fell, he went flying, the woman jumped off my horse and screamed "I'm out of here" and she climbed a fence to get away while the other rider pulled out a rifle and started shooting me. Sheesh.

This is the second woman I was escorting home and I still haven't successfully got there (the first woman died when my horse took a jump. She flew off and smashed her head).

Someone made a cool video on how Rockstar Games game design is outdated and it started with becoming restrictive to the player. He's definitely right as I remember in GTA IV, I was having trouble with multiple missions to the point where I ended up playing the cops vs the criminals to complete the missions for me - I though that was the coolest thing ever - try to be creative in red dead 2 with missions and the game tells you quickly to get back and follow the directions you were given.

Can't remember the guys name but literally do a search for "rockstar games design outdated" on you tube and it will come up - think his name is Sanky or something? He's entertaining too.

Re: Red Dead Redemption 2 —> 10/26/18

Finally finished

Overall I'd say I still enjoyed the game. As annoying as the controls, movement, and slow pace of the game are, the world and story are at least interesting enough to push the game forward. The pace of the story felt a little off though, especially the loyalties of the characters in the group and how things develop. Not really a GOTY type of game for me, and overall I liked GTAV better.

Spoiler:
It was pretty frustrating seeing Dutch lead everyone to death and failure over and over again. That got old quick. It would have been nice to see other characters like Sadie do more in early characters rather all of a sudden become your buddy in Chapter 6. I guess I would have been more invested in all the other people at camp if I did more random stuff around the camp, but I felt like Bill, Javier, etc weren't established as well as they could be and it was just the Arthur, Sadie, Charles, and John show at the end. But I guess that's already a good amount of characters to juggle.

The epilogue was long, but I liked the transition to RDR. Which I never finished and forgot the story of, so now I might go play that.

I've definitely noticed that they do not want you to think too much outside the box in the newer games. They are all about the dramatic scripted events. I remember in older GTAs, there is a mission where the person you are chasing runs out the back door to escape on their motorcycle. When redoing the mission, I blew up the bike, then started the mission. He ran outside, no bike, I killed him right there.

Then in subsequent games, you literally could NOT finish a chase until some stupid scripted jumps and story points happened first. There was no "quick kill." You're not going to kill this guy until we're ready to let you. I hate that.

GTA San Andreas was when I remember the forced paths to start becoming a part of their missions. The stupid fire engine chase at the end was a major pain, in my opinion.

On the plus side for Red Dead, travel aside there weren't any maddening missions that were annoying to complete like I feel like I normally encounter in GTA. Not flying a plane helps.

Yeah, there is a similar mission in GTA 3 that let's you do the same to a car and finish the mission successfully right away. Luckily there are still realistic moments that happen in their games but just not enough.

I mainly brought this topic up because as beautiful as this game is, it's just like all of their other games - there is nothing new and fresh at all aside from a few additions and tweaks. That and I also worry because I will never play through a game of this length ever again and that usually means I will stop buying their games altogether.......but prob not, I'll always want to see how amazing they make the environments in their games.
