Re: Bioshock: Infinite

This has nothing to do with BioShock, but regarding story vs. gameplay: There's a dude on this other board I'm on who's thinking about picking up the new Walking Dead shooter game just to find out what its story is. At the same time, he apparently has little-to-no interest in the Telltale Walking Dead game, even when it's free/on deep discount this week. And he referred to himself as a "Walking Dead addict," too.

I can't quite figure it out. He loves shooters, so I guess if it's a shooter, the story trumps shitty shooter gameplay, but if it's not a shooter, a great story can't overcome the non-shooter gameplay. Or something.

Re: Bioshock: Infinite

I think i've seen MoviePage mention him getting through other games in a couple days too, so he just has the time to run through them and play a lot.

These days, a 100 hour long RPG scares me since those games usually consist of a ton of level and gear grinding that I no longer consider fun gameplay.

I was one of the people that finished Fallout: New Vegas in a matter of days (without doing side quests immediately), and people thought I was crazy... but really... I just had a few days with nothing else to do but play the game. I went back and did as many side quests as possible and put tons of time into that game. No regrets here. On another note, a Fallout: New Vegas spoiler:
Spoiler:
New Vegas is the remnants of Las Vegas! OMG!

Walking dead might have one of the best stories ever in a game...voice acting was amazing, and you really care for the characters. Gameplay was fine, because I love old school point/click adventure games, but this is an example of a game that is successful because of the story, not mechanics...but for me it is definitely an exception to the rule.

100 hour long RPGs enticed me when I was a kid, but I can't buy into the slow pacing, "live a week in our world" pacing of those games anymore.

Re: Bioshock: Infinite

I tried Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. I just can't get into that series.

NSFW Language but accurate in a non-spoilerific way

Re: Bioshock: Infinite

That's pretty funny. Before release I was getting hyped about the game and talking about how I couldn't wait to play, and one of my coworkers joked that it might suck because its just one big escort mission.

It's not short at all. In fact it's one of those games that kept going for lengthy stretches after I thought I had reached the end at least 3 times. I didn't count the hours and sadly there's no in-game counter, but length is not something anyone could seriously complain about with this one. Though there were a couple of times when I thought "This is too long!" But I think I was just tired.

When a game really hooks me, I tend to play it non-stop and go on very little sleep for a couple of days. This one might have also involved a sick day. I seem to have caught a fever.

Re: Bioshock: Infinite

Yeah the only way to know how long you've played is to check on Steam on the PC version. There's no in game timer to check on Consoles?

Re: Bioshock: Infinite

I'd guess I put in about ten hours so far. I'm trying to take it easy, but I'm already looking forward to going through it again when I finish.

Re: Bioshock: Infinite

Finished the game tonight. Steam says it took me 12 hours.

The whole thing felt like one trippy movie as it unravels around you, and that was probably the first time that the ending had me on the edge of my seat as the final bits of the story unfolded. Great game, and even knowing the big reveal it feels like something I would want to play through again. Something I didn't feel in the first Bioshock.

I do wish that the balance of the action was a bit better, as it felt like I vigors were completely as a support option opposed to being your primary weapon. I barely touched them and pretty much used Shock Jockey throughout most of it. I should go back and mess with some of the others some more though.

Really? I used Vigors all the time. Especially the possession one

Oh and since you finished it, tell me how far I have to go. I just got to
Spoiler:
Comstock's house or whatnot, right after finding the three tears and fighting Lady Comstock.

I'm pretty sure I'm right at the end.

I was the same way on my first go-around, but I'm playing through on 1999 mode now and vigors are far more essential. I highly recommend the experience.

Re: Bioshock: Infinite

Started last night, played for about an hour and have really had a blast so far. I will say that I agree with the review that I read about how jarring it is when you have to start shooting in the game. Really enjoying the lack of a HUD so far as it really lets you look at the city and all its awesomeness.

I use the vigors a lot, so much that the first 6 infusion bottles I found went to Salts. Initially I didn't like Murder of Crows, but it's grown to be my favorite so far with Devil's Kiss a distant second.

My biggest gripe is I really wish I could carry more than two weapons at a time to select from, although there are usually a lot of them scattered around to pick up (just not usually what I want).

I think i'll definitely give 1999 mode a shot and mess with vigors some more.

Re: Bioshock: Infinite

Did any of you guys run into this bug? It's a spot in Finkton with infinitely respawning enemies right in my face.

Spoiler:
After going through the tear to return the shop machinery to the gun maker from the police, I left the police station to find the vox and police fighting. I kill a few police, mostly shooting them off rails, then jump on the rails and use the sky hooks to get all the way near the entrance, where the telescope is. I drop down and take on the police, who keep pouring down the stairs. After killing a few dozen I realize they are going to keep spawning, so I work my way up the stairs until I reach the archway just before the area with the confiscated gardens.

Under that archway as soon as I kill one another spawns to take his place. I'm using crows with the kills become traps upgrade so it's never ending crows while I just pump them full of MG rounds, which the dead cops supply ammo for. I probably could have looted bodies for a bunch of money, but after 5 minutes of pumping this mass of screaming men and birds with lead I just push my way through. Once I pass through they stop spawning and the game autosaved. The funniest bit was when I went back to loot the pile of bodies a cop spawned, punched me and then when I backed up he despawned immediately. LOL.

Re: Bioshock: Infinite

I think this game is great but also a bit strange that there are very few people other than enemies and that a society based on supposedly being good is so violent. It is such a large and exquisite city and at the same time almost everyone wants to kill.

Just rented this at Redbox for $2 a night. If it plays as fast as it says here, I should be able to complete it for $8 - $10.

That's a really good point. You have all the monks, and then everyone else who just opens fire on you at will. Kinda funny.
