Couldn't they offer a bigger portion than before without a parent company? They and Rock Band are well established.

Apparently they weren't bought by themselves. They were bought by an investment company called "Columbus Nova" per a tweet by @MrPope.

Depends. They may need more money for themselves now. For example, maybe they need to give employees health insurance instead of being on Viacom's benefits plan. I'd have to think that they have some sort of new costs in operating the business themselves.

investment companies are a bad sign in my experience...they normally are used to buy something, then they sell it off piece by piece.

I assume they'll still do RB sequels, and not just for the next generation when it will be necessary. They need revenue from packaged games as well, and some people won't buy DLC. As long as they only do it every 2 years and improve on it each time, I'm fine with it.

No Jet? Listen to What the Man Said? Live and Let Die? Silly Love Songs? Let 'em In? With a Little Luck?
If anything should have been the live version instead of the studio, it should be Maybe I'm Amazed.

Hey Guys:
We’re happy to confirm the news today that the sale of the company is complete. We appreciate all of your support, comments and warm wishes in the preceding few weeks.
Viacom and MTV Networks have been an amazing home for us over the past 4 years. It’s where we launched both Rock Band and Dance Central, worked with The Beatles, Green Day, AC/DC, The Who and thousands of other artists. We want to take a moment to thank everyone in that organization who helped make these awesome games possible.
We’re excited to be returning to our roots as an independent and privately owned studio. As for what it means for you, the DLC schedule marches on for Rock Band, we will continue our support of previously released titles and we’re hard at work on some unannounced projects that we think you’re going to be pumped about.
Thanks for your continued support and stay tuned for more information here on RockBand.com, over @RockBand on Twitter and at http://www.facebook.com/RockBand.
Yours,
Harmonix

I think that it's great that HMX has been sold to themselves. That's the best scenario, IMO.

They've worked pretty extensively with The Who. One of the first major, major artist packs. A private concert at E3 in 2008(?), plus a Superbowl Megamix this year.
"Work with" != "We made a game starring".

Still, I think Harmonix going independent is probably the best possible scenario, and I'm really glad this is how everything shook out.

I wonder if they entertained any offers from Sony or MS, or if there were any.
With them being indie, I guess that means the community/PR side won't get any better.

For those of you with Dance Central, I Gotta Feeling is on sale for $1 for the next 24 hours. That's 67% off!

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Hey you know those crystal clear screen capture videos of Rock Band performances that get posted to youtube? How does one accomplish that? I'd like to take a crack at doing those. I've got a PS3, run through an HDMI receiver into a rptv if that matters.

Be aware though, the music labels flag those all the time, and your account can be banned from YouTube after a couple of "violations".

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Anyone get any RB-related stuff for Christmas?
My inlaws got us a licensed Rock Band Storage Ottoman. It's made by a company called LevelOne and is different from the "Rock Box" I've seen at BestBuy and on Amazon. They got it at Costco.
Definitely something I wouldn't have bought for ourselves, but it's nice to have a place to store guitars, mics, etc between gaming sessions. The guitar storage area is pretty tight; the strats fit fine, but my Gretsch Duo-Jet is too long. Supposedly there is room to store your drums in the bottom if you disassemble them, but I'm not doing that. At least there's room for the Gretsch down where the drums are supposed to go. It'll probably also hold a keyboard as well.
