Big picture question: What obligation are MS and Sony under to continue to provide the ability to download already-purchased digital games and DLC from their servers? If I wanted to re-download an XBLA game in four or five years on a hypothetically still working 360, are the folks at MS under any legal obligation to still make that content available? Should I go ahead and back up everything somehow (not that I have any great idea how I would even do that without a large external HDD anyway)?

What does this have to do with Steam's Big Picture?
I don't know that they are obligated to have the games available for any certain of amount of time, which is why I loathe small hard drives and hate deleting games.

It's no different than if Apple delists an app from the iTunes store. As long as you have a copy on your device or library (i.e. can get it back on a device) then you can use it. But if you lose it, you can never get it again.

I'm gonna miss the required demos next gen. I spent some time running through a bunch of demos I had downloaded at various times but hadn't gotten to. Demo'd Storm, Spluenky, Giana Sisters, Frogger Hyper, Brothers, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, some spider game and a couple others I'm forgetting.
Out of all those, the only one I kept for a later sale purchase is ITSP. Kinda reminded me of Solar Jetman (if anyone remembers that one).
So yeah, losing mandatory demos next gen is gonna suck.

I'd wager that all of those games would have had demos anyway. I think the only demos we're going to lose out on are for AAA games that don't need one in the first place.

Couldn't agree more.
I understand the demos cost the companies and they kind of hate doing them but I have found them to be super useful. There have been several purchases (especially for games aimed at children) where I wasn't impressed but my daughter surprisingly loved it so I bought it.

If they need to sell their game (meaning it is not COD 12 or Halo 5 or similar) then they would be smart to have a demo/trial.

Demos have helped buy games I would otherwise have passed on, but also helped me pass on just as many games that I would have bought had I not tried the demo. So it goes both ways, though without a demo, it could go bad both ways...

I downloaded a lot of demos in the first years, I haven't played a demo in at least 2 years though. I've downloaded a few of course, but not played them.

I don't have the time (or desire) to play the games I do own, I never had time for demos.

I rarely play demos for retail games but I almost always download a demo for XBLA and Indie games. They have helped me so many times avoid that gut reaction to buy something outright.
