Valve Reveals Portal 2 for PlayStation 3: Steam Details

+ Posted by Doug Lombardi // VP of Marketing, Valve

A few months back, Valve announced some initial details of Steam’s debut in the PS3 version of Portal 2. While people were excited to hear about the PS3 game’s inclusion of Steam access to Portal 2 on any PC or Mac, they also had a bunch of questions.

So, here’s a bit more info about Steam on the PS3.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5190/...e4b00a46_z.jpg

Portal 2 for PlayStation 3 is the first title to support Steam on a console. Specifically, that means it offers cross-platform matchmaking, gameplay, friends, chat, and achievements, all powered by Steam. Steam on the PS3 also saves co-op game progress and single player saved games to the Steam Cloud, enabling players to pick up where they left off on any PlayStation 3.

Steam makes its appearance on the PS3 as an overlay within Portal 2. Here, the Steam overlay provides access to Steam Friends, displaying their in-game or online status and providing a quick pathway to text chats, player profiles, friend requests, and game invites. Steam Achievements are earned in lockstep with PSN Trophies and are also accessible within the Steam overlay.

Steam on the PS3 provides access to all of these features once the player has linked their PlayStation Network account with a Steam account, which is done right within the game. A Steam user can login to an existing account, and anyone new to Steam can create an account with the click of a button.

With all these features, Portal 2 on the PS3 is the best console version of the game, just as it was suggested it would be back at E3 last year. If you’re still hungry for more details, head over to steampowered.com and learn more about Portal 2 for PS3.

Checking this link quoted above gives most of the answers to the questions we had about Steam integration on the PS3. Unfortunately, your in-game progress can't be advanced from PS3 to PC. That's disappointing.

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

Definitely disappointing, since that was probably the most interesting potential bonus.

I still don't get it.

I'm not sure what you don't get.

If I was getting it on consoles, I'd get the PS3 version. You get a code so you can play on it PC and Mac, cloud saving, updates straight from Valve, cross-platform play, and access to your Steam friends list (If you are already on Steam). That sounds better than some achievements and avatar stuff.

I guess, if you don't care about any of the extras Steam gives you, and you don't want to play it on the PC, then yeah it's not really any better than the 360 version.

Anyway, I've got it pre-loaded on my PC, and can't wait to play it.

Also, access to mods.

Are there any (good) mods for Portal 1?

fyi - it appears (through the ongoing valve potato sack ARG) that the game will unlock on steam tomorrow at IIRC 9am PST. check neogaf's thread or the ARG wiki.

The Aperture Science page has a countdown going on, with a message from GLaDOS, that really makes it sound like it will be available today. Should know in less than 2 hours. It does say there is one final test, so maybe it's a demo, or something?

the countdown will reveal that all copies of Portal 2 include Half-Life episode 3....at least that is my wish...

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

Well, the site updated. It now says it needs more computing power for the launch. Under that, it lists all the games that were in the Potato Sack pack on Steam. And lists current cpus for each. Then at the bottom it has a potato x a number. The number has gone down since I first loooked. I assume when it hits 0, it's complete.

Edit: When I refreshed this time, the number went up. So, not sure what's happening. Time to check the Portal 2 forums.

That's a pretty brilliant way to support indie games. Kudos to Valve!

So are we supposed to be running one of those games on our computer right now to "help computing" or something?

Seems that way. I'll have to play some of those games when I get home tonight.

Pretty much.

From Steam:
Help release Portal 2 early: From now until release, play any or all of games in The Potato Sack to expedite the launch of Portal 2. Your efforts will be tracked on the official GLaDOS@home page.

Spend more money just to potentially get Portal 2 early? Yeah, that's ok.

Nah, just launch the Potato pack games you already have. All Steam-philes have at least some of these, right?

Having said that, since it has no effect on those of us getting a console version, I'm done helping out.

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

It looks like it's approximately 7% done. I guess I could see it being available by Monday if it keeps going up at this rate (or preferably faster). I won't be getting any of those games, but I will play through Portal again sometime this weekend.

Is the Potato Pack worth getting? Otherwise, which games within it are definitely worth getting?

I'll probably play some Portal tonight.

The whole pack? Probably not. Defense Grid is awesome. Amnesia is amazing. Lots of folks like Super Meat Boy, but I'm not one of them. Ditto Killing Floor. Just about all the games included is in heavy rotation during the periodic Steam sales. If you want the best price on these games, I'd wait for the next big Steam sale.

Ghym 04-15-11 04:50 PM

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

I'll second Amnesia, if you like horror games. It also has a free special dlc for portal right now. That's the only one I've bought from this pack, since I was waiting for it to be on sale anyway.

The only other game I own, is Audiosurf. I've spent enough money lately, so I don't plan on buying any of the others right now.

Dan 04-15-11 05:33 PM

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

I think I'll wait for the next sale and pick up the ones you guys mentioned (except SMB, which I already have on XBox Live)

I don't

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

Huh. I guess I hadn't played Portal for a while. I didn't know there had been an update putting all of those radios in the game or the alternate ending. It made the playthrough more interesting trying to find all the radios/figure out how to get to them.

kms_md 04-16-11 03:19 PM

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

you do not have to actually play any of the potato games - you can idle them in the background. steam just knows that it has been launched and is being "played".

msdmoney 04-16-11 03:35 PM

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

I'll probably start playing Amnesia, I've been meaning to play that for a while anyways. Maybe I'll try out The Ball too.

Played through portal tonight in about 2 hours hours to get ready for it. I'm GLaD I did, it might be a little easier to wait now. I mean the wait isn't going to kill me, at least I'm STILL ALIVE, but it's almost unbearable.

 I played through it on Friday night.
I'm now playing through Half-Life 2 as I wait for Portal 2. I honestly forgot how much I played of HL2 back when it came out. Unfortunately, now that I've surpassed my previous checkpoint, I still have no idea how far I actually am into the game.

Well, unless something drastic happens, it looks like the release time will be 3:30 a.m. central tomorrow morning. Unless the rest of the games finish up, it won't make quite enough of a difference. I'm anxious to play the game, but not enough to get up THAT early.

I'm getting mine from amazon tomorrow, probably dropped off by UPS. Sometimes they come early, sometimes after I get home from work. Either way, I'm going to open the box it comes in, take the disc out of the package, put it into my console and start playing it!

Then I might call this girl I know, and see if she's up for hanging out, if not, I'll just furiously masturbate and go to sleep.

The GLaDOS site is now engaging starch-based power cells. The auxilary power potatoes are counting down now.

10:50 - Engaging starch-based power cells
11:00 - Reboot safety test protocol initiated...
11:00 - Relaxation chamber locks released...
11:00 - Involuntary hazard mitigation associates have assumed testing positions...
11:00 - Pre-release lethality assessment initiated...

Got my activation code this morning from Valve. I don't get the game any earlier than the rest of you plebeians, but at least I can pre-load it. And it works on my Mac! The real question is, does anyone know if the 360 controller works on the Mac?

As of now (11:19 PM EDT), the countdown clock is at 1 hour and 20 minutes, but another game is close to "finishing". It looks like Portal 2 will unlock sometime after midnight EDT.

You have to kind of wonder who is running walmart. I cancelled this right when amazon matched them. They charged my card last week, called them and they refunded it. Now they shipped it even though they never took their money /facepalm

According to tracking it is set to be here tomorrow. Going to watch my account, but I may have just gotten a free copy.
