Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

I'm just finishing Portal now and really excited for the next one. In the meantime, is Portal: Still Alive worth a $15 download from the Marketplace?

No. It's the same game you just played. There are a few simple extra levels that were from a free flash game. Not even worth 400 if you've already played Portal. Save your money for Portal 2

Thanks. I was under the impression there was more to it than that. I'm extremely curious to see how they make the next game substantial enough to be a full-priced, stand-alone title. I'm a little worried about the value of it.

I hear you, but remember after the discount to MSRP and $20 credit at Amazon, you're talking about a $35 game. Besides, the next Valve game that disappoints me will be the first.

I'm surprised they never did a Portal 1.5. I would have paid for a pack of additional levels using just the mechanics from the first game. I mean, if I had to choose I'd take the sequel, but I did like the simplicity (no, that's not exactly the right word) of Portal.

Didn't the Portal on the marketplace add some shit that wasn't on the Orange Box version of Portal? I thought it had like 4 or more levels added or some additional mode.

Sort of, but I don't think that was really released with previous owners of Portal in mind - more a tiny bonus to entice new people to buy it. (Although when I looked at it on the 360 Marketplace, it wasn't really clear what it was, so maybe they were trying to resell the game.)

How long is this supposed to be, BTW?

Without any sort of multi-player, I would hope it's around 10 hours.

Here's the Qore PS3 preview. They mention that PS3 players will have access to PC mods. Cool.

I enjoy gaming on my 360 so much more than gaming on my PS3 that I pretty much only buy exclusives on the PS3. But all these PS3 goodies are really pushing that theory to the limit ...

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

Thing is that almost all multiple-platform games that are developed on the PC tend to fare far better on the 360 than they do on the PS3.

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

Given Valve's dedication to put Steam on the PS3 now (after Gabe Newell trashed the PS3 when it was first released) I would assume the port would be pretty darn good this time around.

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

Especially if they will be pushing the PC updates to the PS3, it makes more sense to purchase the PS3 version on the console. Maybe not as much for Portal 2, but some Valve games like TF2 are updated constantly, you would be missing out on the 360 if these updates are brought to the PS3 simultaneously with the PC.

slop101 04-11-11 11:54 PM

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

Wait, does that mean that almost every time I put Portal 2 into my PS3, I'll have to sit through Sony's arduously slow-ass fucking update download? No thanks!

glassdragon 04-12-11 12:11 AM

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

The download is probably going to be coming through steam, not psn

and no, probably not. The updates are usually frequent with fps multiplayer games, this game doesn't really have multiplayer aside from coop.

So Steam's going to be constantly running on the PS3, even when Portal 2 isn't in the machine? Weird.

Yeah, right? The thing can't even play a movie and download something at the same time. I just can't believe Sony is just going to let Valve completely circumvent the system to show directly how shitty PSN really is.

I really think people are expecting too much from this. I would love to be wrong because it would usher in a new era of connectivity on consoles and it would force Microsoft to ease up on possibly even repair some bad blood between them and small xbla devs as well as the indie/xna folks.

The PS3 features sound pretty cool, but it still loses out for me:

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

yep - 1st person shooters, especially ones that are more platform/movement-oriented rather than aiming-oriented like Portal (a mouse is nice for aiming, but a keyboard is shit for movement), play so much better with the 360 controller. I enjoyed Killzone 3, but god, I hated having to play it with the dualshock.

SunMonkey 04-12-11 11:51 AM

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

That was one of the main reasons I went 360 over PS3 in the first place.

On the other hand, one could be handy and make one of these:

I think a keyboard/mouse are superior for both movement and aiming :)

Nope, not for movement. You can't get analog movement out of a keyboard - one button press gets you the same speed and you have to press another button with it to slow down or speed up, and it just ties up the fingers. But with an analog stick, it's just far more intuitive to press forward slightly or all the way, along with jumping while moving, etc.

I don't think I've done any mouse/keyboard gaming since the Quake 2 days. I'll take my 360 controller :)

I'd say that's just one part of movement; mouse control isn't just aim, but also enhances precision in direction of movement over an analog stick. Also for me personally, I rarely ever find cases where I need more then two speeds while playing a game. Pressing shift to run/walk in a WASD configuration is no more difficult then pressing a trigger key for me, and the thumb rests on a space bar for easy access to jump if necessary.

Movement and aim are pretty closely tied together, I'd say the small benefit in analog control isn't enough to overtake the additional gains of a mouse control, but that's just me

This is a tired argument by this point, but Portal is far closer to a 3D platformer than a FPS. I think the DS3 will work fine for this game, just like it works fine for Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, LittleBigPlanet and most of the other great 3D platformers of recent years.

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

http://www.vg247.com/2011/04/13/port...-point-to-yes/

Valve’s delays are nearly as legendary as the games that suffered them, so you’d be forgiven for spit-taking at the idea that the developer might be letting the pendulum swing the other way. A number of emails purportedly sent by Gabe Newell, however, seem to suggest just that.

As explained by the Potato Sack ARG’s ever-expanding wiki, coded images were sent to many gaming and tech websites – for instance, Mac Rumors, Joystiq, and Kotaku – and summarily beaten with the ol’ Science Bat until warm sense came flowing out of them.

Together, the images became a 3 x 3 message apparently penned by someone within Aperture Science. Among other things, it mentioned the early release of something called “Kick It” and referenced the 13-game Potato Sack lineup.

A final unscrambled message, however, yielded what’s perhaps the most telling bit: a short, sweet, to-the-point string that reads “4/19/2011_7AM=4/15/2011_9AM.”

Meanwhile, Kotaku reports that Bit.Trip Beat’s joined the Portal-themed party as well – and with a highly intriguing message to boot:

“Like the other 12 games in Valve’s Potato Sack, it is rumored that playing BIT.TRIP BEAT between now and Portal 2′s ‘scheduled’ release date might increase the chances that Portal 2 is released early. Interesting idea…”

WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE. Granted, who knows if Gaijin Games actually let the cat out of the potato sack? It could just be playing along to drum up even more interest in Valve’s spud-flavored shenanigans. Time will definitely tell, though, so mark your calendar for Friday. Or, you know, just remember like a normal person, because that’s only two days from now.
A bit of a stretch, but it would be awesome. If true, it's probably too late to get Amazon to process the pre-orders in time for RDD. I'm not above buying locally and returning for weekend gaming.

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

Hmm, interesting. I took:
“4/19/2011_7AM=4/15/2011_9AM.”
to mean that the Steam version will be available early, but retail stores (online and local) will still have to wait until Tuesday.

pinata242 04-13-11 12:39 PM

Re: Portal 2 PS3/PC/360

That's probably a better interpretation. Kind of sucks for PS3 buyers to not get access to their Steam version.

Well, if this thread has taught me anything it's that PS3 buyers should be kicked in the nuts. So it serves them right!

I think this is most likely, since pre-loading on Steam started yesterday.
