Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
Hey all,
I think the subject says it all, decribe what you would want from a handheld video game system. The DS is nice, but it's too big for me, I can't really just toss it in my pocket. The PSPgo is a decent design, but it really suffers from the lack of another analog nub. So what would you want? |

Re: Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
I guess it all depends on how you use portable gaming. If I'm going to game for hours on end, I do it on a console. If I need to kill some time randomly, I use a handheld. So the iPhone has been my portable gaming device of choice since it's already with me. I would prefer some kind of universally supported plugin for the iPhone though that gives you physical controls.

The iPad with a real controller attached to it for portable gaming and an Xbox 360 w/ Blu-ray capabilities for console gaming.

Re: Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
Yeah, I use a Genesis emulator on my Droid to play old Sega games. That is good for me.

Re: Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
I think if they added one more analog stick to the original PSP it would be pretty damn close to perfect

I popped into this thread to state that it would get dirty fast. Too late...

Re: Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
I will say I'm very excited about the 3DS, and it might be the handheld system I really play. Can't wait to see it in person to judge for myself.

Re: Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
It would have some sort of state-save system that would launch me back to the exact point in the game I had last paused and powered down the system. And games would open into a menu screen right off the bat like NES games did, without a bunch of annoying developer intro screens. I can barely tolerate that stuff in a console game and it's worse in a portable.
As for the device design itself, I'd say start with a PSPgo, put a second analog button where the start/select bottons are, move those buttons above the analogs... but I would maybe make it folding like a DS instead of a slider. |

Re: Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
If Microsoft releases a handheld system i'd like to see xbla integration. I would call it "XBOX MINI" You'd be able to transfer all of xbla games you've downloaded and play on the go. Most of the games seem like a perfect fit for portable gaming anyways. There'd be a ton of great titles they would release based on their exclusive franchises. Halo, Gears of war etc etc. Not exact ports but maybe some spin offs.

Re: Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
Don't get me wrong, the 3DS could be great. I can't wait to take a look at it and see what the games will look like on it, but.....it's just too big for me. I'm not gonna carry it around everywhere I go because it just wouldn't be comfortable for me.
The best designed handheld for me was the gameboy Advance SP. it was small enough for my pocket and folded up so I didn't have to worry about scratching the screen. My ideal handheld: - similar clamshell design to the GBA SP but widescreen (same size screen as the PSP) - dual analog sticks - Thin! About the same thickness as the iphone when closed - Touchscreen & accelerometer - possibly 3D depending on how I like the 3DS screen |

Re: Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
What don't you understand about that? because it has an analog stick means it has to be thick? Look at the analog nub on the 3DS, it hardly pops out at all. I'm glad you're not a system designer. Stick with your day job, if you have one.

Re: Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
I'm just not thrilled by the looks of that shallow analog stick. I can't see it working quite as effectively as the ones on X-Box and PS3 controllers. That coupled with the fact that your specifications (and even thinner system) sound like the analog sticks would be even more shallow makes me question the functionality of them. Thanks for the attitude though, buddy.

Re: Describe your perfect handheld gaming system
It would have to have exactly the same functionality as a system I already have, but be a little bit smaller.
It should play every game I already own, but only in new, a downloadable format that would require me to re-purchase every game I already have. It should use a memory storage system featuring slightly smaller cards than the ones I curruntly own. It should have a scratch-prone front and no case or cover included to protect it. Despite having no new features or processing power than the system I currently own, it should cost about $50 more. |
