Rift requires a monthly subscription still, right? It seems like there should be some sort of information on how much it will cost you after the first month, but I can't see that info anywhere on the product page.

I'm guessing $15 a month.

Yeah, I looked it up. I think it's $13 a month if you buy 3 months or $10/mo if you buy by the year. I'm not an MMO guy so it's an easy pass for me.

If you want to know what achievements will (eventually) get you something from the Great Gift Pile, go here

Not all the achievements are worth the efforts, but lots are easy.

I didn't think I'd have many of the games with the magic achievements, but there are a number of achievements from the various Humble Bundles.

All good games, but JC2 is such a great game , it was actually my favorite game of 2010. It's such a steal it's a crime if you don't get it. It also runs very nicely on PCs without being a system hog.
Metro 2033 on the other hand is a total system hog. It runs very slow on my PC even on medium settings. Still a cool game though and looks really nice if you've got a good gaming rig.
Embarassed to admit some time ago I bought Singularity in a sale, but haven't ever played it.

Re: Steam Holiday Sale 2011

For today they have Half-Life Complete (which includes Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Half-Life: Blue Shift, Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life: Source, Team Fortress Classic) for $9.99.

I've read those games are loosely linked to Portal/Portal 2 and it seems they're kind of RPG-ish like Mass Effect but not quite. Anyone who's played them think I'd like them if I dig games like Portal and Mass Effect?

I don't know where you heard Half-Life is RPGish like Mass Effect, but that is not even the slightest bit true. There are no RPGs elements in Half-Life at all.

The original Half-Life is almost purely an FPS game. It is a very good FPS game, although it is showing its age (it came out in the late 90s). While it has better graphics than PS1/N64 games of that time, it still doesn't hold up to even the PS2 graphics. Half-Life was the first FPS game to have an actual story and have cinematic set-piece events. It also has quite a bit of platforming which was unusual in FPS games at the time.

Half-Life 2 came out in 2004, and is pretty much the same as Half-Life 1 except with better graphics. HL2 was also one of the first games to use physics in a realistic way. Many of the puzzles in the game use physics, like stacking blocks on a seesaw and things like that.

Portal uses the same engine (the Source engine) as HL2, but that is pretty much where the similarities end. It doesn't have the same story or characters or anything else. Portal basically takes the physics puzzles out of HL2 and turns it into an entire game. It is still a very awesome game.

Now that I think about it, when you were thinking of FPS/RPG maybe you were thinking of Deus Ex which came out a couple years after the original Half-Life. Deux Ex is an amazing game as well.

It was clearly a misunderstanding on my part. I had read so much about the great storyline in Half-Life so I assumed it was an RPG-FPS hybrid. I do like FPS games as long as they have a solid story in the single-player campaign.

As for Deus Ex, though I've never played the original or the sequel, I doubt they'd be my cup of tea since I got bored with and never finished Deus Ex: Human Revolution (thank goodness it was a freebie).

So now I dunno if I should bite on the Half-Life deal. I got 3 hours and 14 minutes to make up my mind...

I wouldn't say Half-Life has a great story. Its better than most FPS game stories, but it isn't great by any means. Its just back in the 90s most FPS games were Doom clones with really simplistic stories, and Half-Life tried to create something deeper although it still isn't anywhere close to being as deep as something in an RPG.

Deus Ex on the other hand has a fantastic story. What didn't you like about Human Revolution? The original Deus Ex is easily the best in the trilogy, and Human Revolution was a worthy successor although it did fall short in some ways. Invisible War however was complete crap. Very few people liked Invisible War.

I felt that Adam Jensen played like a total wuss for a so-called badass cyborg. Even leveling him up didn't make him feel all that impressive. I didn't like that the game basically forces me to play in stealth and hack everything but then locks me in a room with a walking tank (it really pissed me off to see Adam just walk up to the guy after I spent the entire mission sneaking around). Adam is also a real dumbass for a security expert.
Spoiler:
Not only does he not suspect something's fishy with how the investigation of his ex-girlfriend's death was handled but when that reporter lady set him up, I knew he was a total retard.

I like RPG's and the premise of DE:HR was intruiging but the excecution let me down so I just outright quit. I don't even remember where I left off.

It's good but it's hard in some spots. There was an achievement on the 360 for finishing with 5 or less deaths. That's impossible.

Picked up E.Y.E. : Divine Cybermancy and Cave Story

I also saw RAGE is on Sale for $15. That's a bad sign when your game hasen't even been out for three months and has dropped that quick! By next sale it'll probably be down to $5
