Portal - Free for PC/Mac 'til May 24th

Not sure if everyone already knew this, but I thought I'd give the heads up just in case.

Cool, thanks for the heads up!

I can't tell -- since this is Steam, do they deactivate the free copies on May 24, or is this free for life if you install it between now and then?

Re: Portal - Free for PC/Mac 'til May 24th

Good question.

My understanding is that it's for life, but only able to be downloaded until the 24th. That's what the consensus clearly was in the thread I found out about it in. But I have nothing to cite to prove it so that may be a mistaken notion.

Free for life if you install it before May 24.

No excuse to not pick this up, one of the best games of the last few years and it's free. It's a great incentive to get people to atleast try Steam, even if they aren't PC gamers, and get suckered into great deals every week.

Torchlight is only $9.99. That's a great deal as well.

My computer won't run Portal, but I'll try to download it and install it as much as I can, hoping to 'lock it in as free' until I upgrade my computer.

I ended up getting Torchlight (PC version) for $5 during a sale late last year knowing full well that I wouldn't have to rebuy it once Steam was on the Mac.

Re: Portal - Free for PC/Mac 'til May 24th

I used to be a huge PC gamer til I switched to a Mac. I have a 2009 Macbook Pro 13" with 2.53Ghz and am wondering how this this laptop will do in regards to games being releases through Steam. Not much into high quality of the graphics but more for performance.

Just fine. Apparently just about any Mac from 2008 on should have no real issues. I have the last model Black MacBook with 4GBs of RAM and apparently I'm going to be golden (Portal loads to a blank page...)

LOL!! I'm personally just waiting for Steam to have either Team Fortress 2 or Left 4 Dead available for the Mac.

Re: Portal - Free for PC/Mac 'til May 24th

Does the Steam version have the extra levels that weren't included in the Orange Box but were included in the XBLA version?

There is an "Extra Levels" section on the menu, but I'm not sure if these are the "Still Alive" levels or something else.

Re: Portal - Free for PC/Mac 'til May 24th

BTW, I just saw this -- somehow I missed it back in March:

Portal 2 Announced

Press Releases - Valve Mar 5, 2010

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike and Half-Life) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Portal 2 for shipment this coming holiday season.

Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Portal, which won 70 industry achievement awards.

For more information, please visit www.steamgames.com

The underlining is in the original and I have no idea what it means.

Actually, I found somebody to shoot in this game, but she's quite wily. Always disappears through a portal as I get closer.

I just beat the game again. I forgot how short it was. I still need to play through the advanced maps though. Great game.
