Re: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Mac & PC) - July 27th, 2010

I picked this up today and I'm surprised at how low the system requirements are, although, the game was certainly developed for Pentium 4 and 1GB of RAM. It isn't capable of using more than 2 cores on my CPU, but even with a pretty old nVidia 9600, I'm playing at high graphics with no lag. The 5 or so missions I've played are perfect vignettes, none of that old 4 hour marathon mission thing.

I was very surprised and full of disappoint that there wasn't a tech tree in the box.

Nope, I'm getting exactly what they report -- 35-40 FPS on Ultra. That's certainly good enough for this sort of game.

I'm guessing it's going to be at least a year before we see these expansions and by then you will have forgotten that you paid $60 for the first installment.

I'm not sure if you're just arguing to be contrarian or what. Someone suggested that it was their understanding that each game would be treated as a standalone title. We were just discussing the ramifications of that. Isn't that what a forum is for?

At last year's Blizzcon they said the zerg and protoss expansions would be 30-40 bucks

Re: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Mac & PC) - July 27th, 2010

based on what they did with their other RTS. i would be that they would be expansion packs and would be priced below $60.

I just noticed some quirks for SCII battle.net. You cannot change your name once you register. I did not know that and initally created a fake name intending to change it later.

also, there doesn't seem to be a way to set your status to offline in battle.net. sometimes you don't want to be disturbed by your friends. also found it weird that you need to login to battlenet to play a game against the computer only.

They give you plenty of warning like saying "Are you sure? You only get one shot at this". Not trying to be harsh here, but if you couldn't take those sorts of hints, that's really more your fault than theirs.

I'm pretty sure there's an option on the login screen to just "play locally" or something like that. Down in the lower right-hand corner, maybe? I can check when I get home tonight.

There's a play as guest option, but it looks like it doesn't let you play against the computer, just the campaign. That kind of sucks.

Weird. I'm 100% certain I got a big old warning like I detailed above. I installed the game on Thursday, and there was a patch auto-installed so maybe that warning was included in the patch?

I got my copy on launch day. I remember seeing a message that said the name was permanent. I don't remember any warnings besides that one.

That's pretty impressive, but shouldn't the enemies be able to fight back?

Baby steps.

It isn't the engine that is impressive, but the Map Editor. It seems they looked at all the things people tried/wanted to do with the Warcraft 3 editor but couldn't and now added that functionality into it. It is very impressive stuff.

Also all of the high-res models that are used for cut-scenes are available in the editor as well, to do with whatever you want. You can also import in sound effects, music, and 2d artwork... not sure if you can also import in 3d models though.

I play it on my Intel Mac Mini and it works just fine. Sometimes it stutters coming out of cutscenes and into the things that happen on the map before you get control, but once the mission gets going it works great. Looks good too.

Do you have the 2009 Mini or the new 2010 Mini? Specs?

Can you cross platforms if you're playing multiplayer PC v Mac on Battlenet?

I would like to know specs as well, thanks. I have the late 2008 iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8Ghz with the Nvidia 8800GS.

Yes, I'm fairly positive you can cross platform when playing MP. Battlenet doesn't care what system you have. Also, I think your auto-saves are saved in the "cloud" so you could play in Mac OSX and then also in Windows via Bootcamp and not have separate saved games for each. I don't think this applies to manual saves though.

That seems comparable to my current PC specs, and it runs the game fine on High Detail.

And yeah, it keeps track of what mission you're currently on, but not manual saves.
