The guys at 1Up are about to start a live video showcasing the 3DS and launch games, taking questions and so on...

I may have to get Nintendogs + Cats to use as a game to show off to people, and I'm sure my fiance would love that one if nothing else.

But yeah, Pilotwings is really my front runner right now other than that one. I think I'll just hold off until some more reviews come in for everything though.

Looks like there's another reason to keep your DSi/DS Lite: Nintendo can remotely brick your 3DS if they detect you've been using a flash card.

Apparently Nintendo has demo units in Chicago, New York, and LA. I'm going to the metro station after work today to check it out and see if I want to preorder one.

Re: Nintendo Announces 3DS - 3D w/o Glasses!

I got some brief hands on time with the 3DS at PAX East this past weekend.

The first demo was one of the built in Augmented Reality games, the archery one. You put down one of the AR cards (the block with a question mark) and it shows targets popping up on whatever surface you put it on, and the targets will be facing different directions, requiring you move around to get different angles at the targets. Then the boss monster will pop up and you have to do the same thing, move around to attack his body parts at different angles. It was a pretty fun and impressive demo for a game built in to the system.

The other game I got to try was Street Fighter. The graphics looked nice and the 3D effect was cool, even though it would have no effect on gameplay for a game like this. There were two cameras you could pick from, original or dynamic, the dynamic one seemed to look at the horizontal playing area from a sideways 45 degree angle instead of straight on, presumably to show more depth for 3D. But I found it harder to play with that camera angle.

Overall my impressions were favorable, made me glad that I preordered one.

A good portion of the bestbuys have the demo stations up. I called the one around me at columbus circle in NYC and yesterday they had it setup.

Pilotwings was the demo game.

Re: Nintendo Announces 3DS - 3D w/o Glasses!

Alright, so my Best Buy had theirs set up as well. The 3D was pretty cool. It's definitely a see it to believe it type of handheld.

I found that I actually preferred the 3D slider switch to NOT be on full - but rather 3/4 of the way up.

What game was set up at your demo station?

Re: Nintendo Announces 3DS - 3D w/o Glasses!

I believe the only game in the Best Buy demo units is Pilotwings, and yeah, most people have to have the 3D on that game turned down at least a little bit because of how strong the 3D effect is in that game.

Here is a great unboxing video...

Pilotwings, as well.

It's a fine title to demo the system with, but I doubt I'd buy it. Felt too much like Wii Sports Resort.

Re: Nintendo Announces 3DS - 3D w/o Glasses!

I asked the guy at the video game section if they were going to change games and was told SSF4 3D would be next once the shipment comes in.

Pilotwings was cool, but I wouldn't purchase it.

The 3D itself was more of a depth feeling.
I kept expecting a avatar like experience where stuff was floating out of the screen.
While the experience was kind of like that I think depth was more pronounced then stuff popping out.
I got a wow feeling when I was gliding sort of felt like I was going forward and this was made even more obvious when you turn off the 3D and then turn it back on a wow I can see the depth feeling comes up.

I only spent 5-10 mins with it, but from that time, I'd say no - honestly.

I've preordered it. I still remember how wow'd I was back when the SNES version came out with the fancy mode 7 effect. A 3D version sounded like a great opportunity for this new system.

Check out your local Best Buy and see if they have the demo unit out. Then you can make the call yourself and still have time to cancel the pre-order if you see fit.

When I first saw the 3D effects in avatar it felt to me that the objects in the movie were coming out of the screen and also had some depth even though it was layered.

The 3DS from the short time I played it does not have that same pronounced effect of objects coming out of the screen as I saw in avatar personally.

The depth of the image is what stood out to me mostly.

I have read Ridge racer and Nintendogs have an even better effect so I am waiting to see how those look.

I'm really digging the positive word of mouth about the system, but I just will not buy first generation portable Nintendo hardware anymore.

Question, Did you see it in Digitial 3D or IMAX 3D? I've had the screen popping effect with IMAX 3D before, but I've never been to a digital 3D screening where I felt like anything was jumping off of the screen, it was always just depth. I saw Avatar in Digital 3D, and all I saw was added depth.
