Splinter Cell: Conviction (4/13 on X360) [Demo Out Now]

I did a search for any old Conviction topics but didn't find any.

The single player demo hit Live today and I must say I'm impressed.

The series has definitely changed quite a bit since the original outing.

What I liked:
*Sam no longer feels sluggish in his movement, especially in turning.
*The marked execute feature only works if you get a close-quarters kill.
*It's possible to have a firefight, but it takes a bit of thought to make it through alive.
*Easier to evade in the shadows, due to the AI mechanic of looking for the last place you were spotted first.
*Quick moves to other points of cover.

What I didn't like:
*Graphics weren't mind blowing; sound design was a little lacking.
*The demo was very brief, so I got no real indication of how playing with pure stealth would work.
*The series has strayed a little too far into the pure action realm, and if the multiple methods of completing an objective mechanic doesn't pay off, the end result will be a bit disappointing.

All in all, I'm quite excited for the game, and it looks like all the delays have paid off.

PS3 isn't getting the game... yet. Who knows if Microsoft paid for full exclusive or timed like other games.

I didn't try it. What made it so bad in your eyes? I have the game pre-ordered at Amazon.

There is a video on the Ubisoft website that does show it is still possible to play through in full stealth mode without knocking out or killing any guards.

Regarding the exclusivity issue, remember that the original Splinter Cell game was designed for the Xbox hardware and was supposed to be exclusive, but they ported it to PS2 and Gamecube half a year later. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Conviction does the same.

Poor graphics, controls seemed clunky and hard to get used to. I didn't get too far into the demo because I kept dying...on Rookie difficulty. I quit playing out of frustration.

Maybe I just suck at the game. Either way, it's probably not for me.

The longer you go without playing a Splinter Cell game, the harder it is to get back into it.

I have to admit, though, I'm not pumped for this release like I am say Red Dead Redemption.

Wow. I did replay it last night and found some alternate paths, but had no clue it could be played that way.

I have never been a big fan of the Splinter Cell games, but this demo was actually fun....it did not look as bad as some people are saying, and I had no problem getting around...still will not buy it till it is cheap though..

Re: Splinter Cell: Conviction (4/13 on X360) [Demo Out Now]

Played it today. I love the Splinter Cell series, I've played and beaten all the games. I wasn't blown away by this demo though. I'm guessing a new studio was in charge of this game. The graphics were mediocre, it's more action then stealth now, and I thought the controller layout was annoying.
All that being said I'll still buy the game.

There are two studios that make the Splinter Cell games.

Ubisoft Montreal made the original Splinter Cell, Chaos Theory, and the Xbox/PS2 version of Double Agent.

Ubisoft Shanghai made Pandora Tomorrow and the Xbox360/PS3 version of Double Agent. (The two different versions of Double Agent are quite different in many aspects with the previous gen version being the preferred version by most SC fans)

The Montreal games are usually favored by the fans as being vastly superior to the Shanghai games. It kind of reminds me of the Call of Duty franchise where the Infinity Ward games are superior to the Treyarch games.

With that said, Montreal is doing Conviction so I have hope that the final game will be good. I can't say for sure but the demo could just be an early build which would explain the rough graphics. Regarding the action aspect, like I said in a previous post there is a video on the Ubisoft website that shows someone playing through in a complete stealth manner without engaging any guards. So you can play through either action style or stealth style whichever you prefer. At least it is an option now whereas in the early games going the action style would tend to get you killed quick.

Re: Splinter Cell: Conviction (4/13 on X360) [Demo Out Now]

maybe I didn't notice it, but was the "shadow" meter in the demo? To let you know how hidden you are.

Also, Sam's trademark nightvision goggles have a different look to them. It's been awhile since I played the other games, but wasn't the vision on those classic green like real night vision? I don't like the black and white style this one employed.

I really enjoyed the demo even though I've been killed a couple of times in the sewer segment trying to rescue the Dr.

The new goggles are sonar based, so he can see through walls.

Re: Splinter Cell: Conviction (4/13 on X360) [Demo Out Now]

Have played almost all SC games and have this one pre-ordered. Not cancelling, but I likewise am not a big fan at all of the new goggle look. Not good night vision--seeing through walls should be an alternate view like the thermal.

Thought the controls were fine, but nickdawgy is right: This ain't Call of Duty and it takes a long time to get into sleath mode and it's hard to resist the urge to just open fire. Also, for those who care, the language is the demo was harsh and I had to jump to turn it down (kids). A lot of "F____ ME!!," etc.
