Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs
If you go to Game Data Utility, you can see what each game has used on the hard drive. Some games will install 3-5 GBs each. The Save Data Utility shows your saves, which shouldn't be taking up that much space.
Also note that with an 80GB drive, you probably only have around 65 or so that can actually be used, after accounting for overhead. That demo probably needs a few GB on top of the size of the download, since it has to be installed (which is to say, extracted somewhere else).

Is anybody able to download any patches today?
I just started using my PS3 again this weekend and have been downloading patches for all of my games, however it has been so sloooow that it's a little mind blowing. It took 4+ hours last night just to try to get Pain updated and I only got halfway done. Today I tried to finish it and checked on the progress an hour later and it was only at 2%. Last night was slow, but it was able to download 1% every ten seconds. I was also able to get Killzone 2 updated in under an hour. So at first I thought it was just Pain, but the same thing is happening with LittleBigPlanet. My internet settings have not changed since last night, yet I can no longer download patches unless I'm willing to leave my system on for six days. Any suggestions before I put my PS3 through the wall? I have the fat 80 GB BC version.

Because Sony does not restrict the size of patches so the developers can keep rolling them out. There are 9 for Pain and 11 for LBP. It's insane, especially since they are all 500+ MB and my apartment doesn't have the greatest internet connection.

I wonder how PSN users in Canada with their new bandwidth caps are going to take to this sort of thing going forward. Sony really needs to figure out a way to have updates containing only the affected resources.

Like Eric D. all I wanted to yesterday was play little big planet. Little did I know that it would take an hour to upload the 11 'patches'.
Not being tech savy at all, what exactly are these updates/patches that come across the ps3? I've read that they sometimes have them to fix glitches like the ones I've heard about in New Vegas, but other than that I am baffled. Why would LBP (the original) need 11 updates two years after it's release? Or is it an overall ps3/psn thing?
Sorry if I come across as an idiot.

Usually the patches contain bug fixes and/or new features. It's not uncommon for this sort of support.
What is uncommon is the sheer size of these updates. Normally you can get away with just pushing new versions of compiled code. Replace resources that are linked from other, unchanged assets.
It's up to the system to allow those overlays and it sounds like the PS3 wasn't designed for that.

Even downloading new stuff is a pain, because you still have to "Install" it.

As far as the PS3 in general, some games have a tiny update or none at all, some have a large amount. The firmware updates are always big files even if it's just a tiny change, because Sony designed it so the entire firmware has to be downloaded every time instead of patching to modify it piece by piece.

Sometimes the patches have DLC that can then be unlocked with a small file. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case for LBP. Edit: yeah, Walker Boh implied this.
The reason you install it is because the download is a compressed file that has to be unpacked to where it's supposed to go. Well, actually I think in some cases it isn't one file, and that's when you see all those little updates with the progress bars instead of just the percentage.

I remember when I first bought Pain on sale, I was all excited to play it, then got hit for hours and hours of patches. At least they have background downloading.
The worst experience I had was when I bought a PSP Go a few months ago. It prompts you to download the system update before you can do anything with it. It then tells you that it can't install the system update unless the system is charged past a certain amount, so I have to leave it plugged in for a few hours. Then after the update is installed, I have to download my first game, which takes a few more hours. Then every time I want to buy and download a new game, I have to put it down because there's no background downloading. Ugh.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs
From my experience, the patches download faster early in the morning. I tried getting LBP started this afternoon and left it on while I got groceries. By the time I came back it was still on the first patch at 34%. I just cancelled it and will leave it on while I sleep again.
There is a pro and con to the unlimited patch size that Sony allows. The pro is that the developers can keep adding to the game as much as they want in order to keep it fresh. The con, aside from the obnoxious amount of time it takes, is it allows developers to be lazy and rush out an unfinished game and have their customers essentially beta for them. Then they can just patch away until it is truly finished.

if you dont care about what is getting patched and just want to play you can turn off the internet connection then it won't know there's a patch.

Still no PSN store update now that I'm itching to play Stacking tonight.

About fucking time. It's hard to complain about a free game but I can't believe how late they update their store.

Downloading now. 1GB, so it'll be a while. Typical PSN : no demo available for the game, but when you buy the game, you download a 1000 MB demo file and a 500 kb unlock key. Assholes.

That said PS Plus is the best gaming value ever. Can't believe this game is part of Plus on release day.

For reference, XBL updates around 5am EST on Wednesdays. Is that late or early? Is it better in the middle of the night so it's "first thing Wednesday" as opposed to "sometime late Tuesday?"
Really, I don't know what the promised/expected time is to classify anything as late.

The demo is available but it is the whole game file. Having this free for PS Plus subscribers was enough to get me to sign up for the 15 month plan. The game was 15 and the plan for 15 months cost me 50 so I'm sure I'll get my moneys worth over the next year or so. I've already downloaded Digger as well as it is a freebie for subscription holders. Also, my download only took about ten minutes or so for the Stacking game.

I agree about PS+. This totally seals the deal. Between this and Sam & Max, the $50 is almost covered right there. Add in the free themes, the PSP minis, the PSOne Classics, the exclusive discounts and the monthly Qore, and I'm more than satisfied despite the fact that I've already purchased many of the previous "freebies". To give away a highly desired title at launch is pretty unheard of. I hated Digger HD though.
It took me about 90 minuted to download Stacking and I'm still downloading the Killzone 3 SP demo.

Kevin Butler (Vice President of Secret Codes) tweeted this:
Congratulations, you just posted the jailbreak code for the PS3!
Nice job protecting your secrets, Sony!
