The voice acting, the challenges, the amazing opening, the unbelievable ending and the feeling of being the Dark Knight -- these are the things that standout looking back. I've beaten this thing twice and still want to call in sick and chase Riddler Trophies. Batman: Arkham City isn't just better than Batman: Arkham Asylum, it's better than most games on the market. . IGN Ratings for Batman: Arkham City (PS3). 9.0 Presentation I think a few villains deserved more attention than they got here, but the story, the setting and the comic nerd love given to this game are awesome. 8.5 Graphics Some texture pop-in along with iffy lip syncing, but Arkham City looks great in a totally grimy, filthy way. Got to love Batman's costume breaking down over time. 9.0 Sound Mark Hamill's Joker and Kevin Conroy's Batman are out of this world. A bit too much of the same voice actor for generic thugs. Music and sound effects rock. 9.5 Gameplay I felt like Batman -- that's awesome. The majority of stuff will feel familiar, but from gadgets to gliding it’s been tweaked and improved. 9.5 Lasting Appeal You need to play the game twice. Then, there are the side missions, the Riddler Challenges, the challenge maps and whatever DLC Rocksteady whips up. 9.5 OVERALL Amazing (out of 10) |

So the downward spiral continues: it has now been confirmed that the on-disc, single-player Catwoman content will require a one-time use code to unlock (they're not calling it an "online pass" this time since it's not really online content, and since I guess that would underscore the fact that people with offline consoles won't be able to play some of the content they just paid for). Code is included with new copies of the game and is 800 MSP/$10 otherwise.
With the mind-boggling array of pre-order exclusives, the pre-release DLC announcements, and now this kind of thing which I feel uncomfortable supporting in principle even though I'd be buying it new anyway, I'm thinking about just skipping this game completely for now. It's all just such a huge turn-off. Earlier today I was trying to decide where to pre-order and felt like I'd need to do research to figure it out. I don't want to do research just to order a game. I may just wait and pick up the GOTY with all of the content included in about a year. Or maybe I'll pre-order it and be angry with myself for doing so. I don't know. That said, there are few things that I get truly excited for these days, and Arkham City is one of them. I don't really buy games MSRP, but I have to get this day one. With that in mind, I just went with Best Buy because the Robin stuff sounds cool to me, so I'm going to take my chances with that. I would go with K-mart if there was any other game coming out that I want, but there isn't. It would be nice if instead of emailing the code, Best Buy just did like Gamestop did with Arkham Asylum and just make every game have the code for the scarecrow maps inside the case. |
Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
Actually, that first bit of information is incorrect. The Catwoman content isn't on the disc, you have to enter a code and wait for it to download.
Also, Gamestop will be offering codes for the content with used copies. |
Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
I havent bought a game on first day release in over 10-15 years. But I will be getting this bad boy.
Whats the catch for the $30 coupon from Kmart? Thats a big chunk of money and well face it, its Kmart. There has to be something in there to screw ya. |

I wonder if that's something on-disc or a DLC code. I'd borrow the Blu from Netflix, but no way I purchase that POS movie on Blu ray, Batman skin or not.

As for the actual deal, it's a reward card like Best Buy. Swipe your card when you buy it and the coupon prints out. I guess the only thing that could be considered a "catch" is that the $30 coupon isn't active until the following week though. It prevents people from buying the game, returning it(and keeping the coupon)-then re-buying the game with the $30 coupon. I was considering Arkham City as a rental, but I think this $30 deal is swaying me into a purchase. |

So clearly the PS3 version is better, right?

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
After 2 hours of play, I'm calling it. Batman: Arkham City is 2011 GOTY. It's possibly the most flawless and perfectly executed game I have ever played. There is just so much to do, and every single item in the game is incredibly detailed. I just don't see how anything can even come close this year, or probably even next year.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
You've been playing the Story Mode of Uncharted 3 since June? I find that hard to believe, but please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm more inclined to believe you've been playing the Multiplayer Beta since the end of June; and if that's the case, you can't exactly judge the quality of the real game based on a beta version of the multiplayer mode.
EDIT: And for what it's worth, Uncharted 2 > Batman: Arkham Asylum. Batman was great and all, but I don't think it has the same replayability as Uncharted. And honestly, by the time I finished the game I had had about enough of the repetitive combat, especially when it came to the fighting the Titans. |

Anyway, regardless of my being a Batman fanatic, I have to agree with discostu about AC being a serious game of the year contender. Someone on youtube has uploaded the first two hours or so of the game, and I have watched it. Going by those two hours alone, if AA was a 10/10, then AC is a 20/10. |

I've beaten it dozens of times in every damn language, gotten platinum numerous times, and go back to play it again tomorrow. We all agree it's a huge letdown from UC2 in nearly every aspect. FWIW, here is how I would rank the games: Uncharted 2: 9/10 Batman AA: 9/10 Batman Arkham City: 10/10 Uncharted 3: 7/10 (being VERY generous) I'm not making any money off saying Batman is awesome, I have nothing to do with it. I just wanted to quickly tell you guys that the game is amazing and you all should be very happy on Tuesday! |

As I stated in the UC3 thread, I work for Sony and am sadly STILL working on this game. I'll spoil the hell out of it for you if you don't believe me ;)
And what kind of developer would say their game isn't awesome? No developer does that. |
Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
Sounds like he's a playtester, not a dev. I would never trust a playtester's opinion of the final product. They have to deal with too much crap to have a realistic view.
Now that doesn't mean UC3 > B:AC, I'm just putting it into perspective. |

Yeah uh huh sure. If you actually were one of the people working on the game, you would have had to sign a nondisclosure contract preventing you from talking about it or else you would be fired and/or sued.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
Okay. I totally expect Arkham City to be absolutely great and a HUGE seller. The first was pretty close to perfection and I'm expecting this to be better.

You said you would "spoil the hell out of it if we didn't believe you." A nondisclosure contract would prevent you from doing that. I would assume that anyone working on the game, even the playtesters, would have to sign a nondisclosure. And yes, the opinion of someone who plays a game casually for fun is going to be vastly different from someone who plays a game 40 hours a week as a career. Even the best game in the world will get very tiresome if you play it that much. Also saying that UC3 is not polished is funny coming from a playtester who is playing the unfinished version. Of course the unfinished version is going to be unpolished. You are playtesting so that it will hopefully be polished for the final product. There's a huge difference between playing a finished game for 8 hours in a week versus playing an unfinished game for 40 hours in a week. I bet if you were a playtester of AC you would be saying bad things about it too... |
Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
I'm not saying Arkham City won't be Game of the Year, but just that I'll reserve my judgment until I've played the finished versions of both. I think any reasonable person would take the same stance.
And obviously, even after everyone plays both, there's still going to be a difference of opinion. I loved Arkham Asylum, but found Uncharted 2 to be the better of the two games, especially when it comes to replayability. I think for me part of it was due to the fact that in Arkham Asylum once you completely cleared an area you might still have to go back that way later on, but there wasn't anything to do there; and as I mentioned before sometimes fighting thugs and titans got tedious for me. kgrogers1979 obviously disagrees with my assessment, which is fine, but at least he's played through the final version of both games before forming his opinion.

I have played both finished versions... Really don't care what you have to say or what you believe. Not going to argue about Uncharted in a Batman thread. Batman is the shit, UC3 not so much.
And in any case, the only reason I've continued the discussion this long is because you came off as extremely obnoxious when you threatened to spoil Uncharted 3 if I didn't believe you had played it. Arkham City may well be the game of the year, and it looks like it's a serious contender, but there's other games that could give it a run for its money when it's all said and done. |
Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
Not sure why anyone doubts discostu. He always gets a lot of games early. Check out his gamerscore.
Thanks for the early impressions discostu, I might have to pick this up at Kmart for the $30 credit. |
Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
No problem!
As for spoiling UC3, why would I really do that for people here? I even put a smiley face after it! |

That's where you lost me. I don't even have the words to say how much I disagree with the above statement. I got tired of UC2's shooting half-way through my first play-through. Yet I played through AA twice, with the second time being even more fun. In fact, I'm playing through it a 3rd time in anticipation of the sequel, and having just as much fun!

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
Really the only bad part of the first batman was the terrible final boss fight. I don't even know what you mean by the Titan fight ruing the game for you. Are you talking about the few times you fight the large dudes and have to blind them with the Batarang? I didn't mind that, as it only occured 2 or 3 times during an 8 hour+ game.

I also felt like I ended up playing in Detective Mode for most of the game too, which I've read is something they've (thankfully) changed for the sequel. And by the looks of it, there will also be more thugs running around Arkham City than there were in Arkham Asylum, which is another plus. Once you cleared an area in Arkham Asylum, if you went back to that area to track down a Riddler Trophy or some Joker Teeth or even to get to another area, there was literally nothing to do; it would've been nice to regenerate some new thugs from time to time to keep things interesting. |
Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
Detective Mode definitely was the worst part of Arkham Asylum for me. It wasn't a huge issue but the game had a really cool design but you had to have that feature on a bunch so it kinda took away some for me. Still a really fun game though. I paid off my Collector's Edition on Friday and am so stoked to pick it up at midnight Tuesday!!

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
so all of these retail exclusives will eventually be available as paid Live or PSN DLC, correct?
|
Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
yes
|
Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
And if this is like most games you can sell your code on ebay day one for much much higher than whatever it'll eventually cost on the marketplace.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. I know there weren't that many of them, but it felt very repetitive for me after a while. By no means did it ruin the game, it just felt a bit rote after the first time. There was Bane, a couple of Titans, and then The Joker; the Killer Croc fight was sort of similar too. It just felt overused by the end of the game and I didn't find that style of fighting particularly fun.
So stu, how are the boss fights this time around? |

I ordered this off Amazon with release day delivery. Does anyone have any experience with Amazon shipping games on time?
