My 1st Gen XBox 360 just died (The Ring of Death) what should I do with it?
The infamous Ring of Death affected by 1st Gen 2006 XBox 360 a few days ago and the machine was dead.
I went ahead and bought a replacement ($299 120GB) a few days ago.
Today I went to Gamestop and dumped the chords, extra controller which I don't need and 20 GB Hard Drive and managed to get around $39 bucks in credit which I used for the new Mario Bros Game for the WII, which I also own.
Now what should I do with the Dead System? A friend of mine said I could still contact XBox and get the Unit fixed if I wanted to. Will they still fix it for free even though the Unit is over 3 years old? Would a Game Stop take a Unit without a Hard Drive and Chords? They told me a working unit is worth about $70. Or should I just dump at some electronic waste collection facility?

Take it in to Blockbuster. I think they repair consoles now. At least call them to see what they will charge.

If it's a 1st generation system I wouldn't bother getting it fixed. It will most likely die on you later on.

1. Give it to this kid, along with the following note attached: "Hey, here's the 360 you were supposed to get for Christmas last year. Enjoy."
2. As he goes to turn it on, film reaction and laugh hysterically as poor, naive kid gets duped again
3. Upload to YouTube
4. Enjoy short-lived internet fame until later that night, when the poor, naive, double-duped kid murders you in your sleep

Alright, enough of the smart ass sarcasm. Seriously, can this be salvaged? I mean a friend told me I should contact XBox and they will send me a box to send it back to them to get it fixed?
Will they charge for it since it's 3 years old or will it be free? The box is registered with them. That way if the box can be fixed without a charge, then I can take it back to Game Stop and at least trade it away.
I already bought a new Unit a few days ago, so I just want to see if there is anyway to salvage this thing and get something out of it.
As I mentioned, I got rid of the power cables, AV Chords, Hard Drive....So all I really have left is the Unit.
Or, realistically, am I stuck with a worthless pile of scrap metal?

The guy that said eBay wasn't being sarcastic. Do a Completed Listings search for "RROD". You'll see RROD 360's selling for around $50.

Return it to Costco, get all your original $ back, buy a new Elite and a PS3 for same amount.

The obvious step is to call MS. The warranty is a minimum of 3 years, not a maximum.
You'll never know if they'd fix it for free unless you talk to them.

you are lucky. i am on my 3rd xbox.
they extended the warranty for the 3 RROD on all xbox so you should be able to send it in to MS without paying anything.
Mine broke 2 months ago. i sent it in and they sent me another refurbished xbox.
Took about 2 weeks from the time i sent it to receive my replacement.
they are pretty fast but i was disappointed to receive a first gen replacement with no hdmi when the one i sent in for repair was a falcon (2nd gen) with hdmi.

Microsoft stopped providing "coffins" for red-ringed consoles. If it red-ringed within three years and MS verifies they then replace it free and provide a shipping label. You just have to obtain a box yourself.

Re: My 1st Gen XBox 360 just died (The Ring of Death) what should I do with it?
I'm in the same boat mine bit the dust a while back and online it says I have to pay 100 bucks, I should call them to see if I can get them to fix it for free. Any idea what a working 1st gen 20gb Pro system would go for in working condition on ebay vs. in RROD condition?
Edit-Is there any way to clear the hard drive short of attaching it to a working 360 and formatting it? I'd obviously like to sell the HD too but not with any of my personal info on it.

it makes a good large paper weight or door stop? Seriously though, I have a friend who had a dead one and he just tossed it- wouldn't do that, I'd ask microsoft first and if that doesn't work sell it or fix it somehow at a reasonable price.

Yup, they just fixed one of our 1st Gen ones for free. Usually red ring of death repair is no matter how old the machine is.
