What was the first game you pre-ordered? + Bonus Nostalgia Thread

I hope to inspire something similar to the VHS rental thread elsewhere.

What was the first game you pre-ordered? Did you get anything with it? What about early game shopping/rental memories? Stores that don't exist etc.

The first game I ever pre-ordered was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the N64. I got a shirt and a gold-colored game case.

Remember when Sears used to be a legit video game destination? I still remember their catalogs with all the little screenshots of each game.

WWE Smackdown! 2: Know Your Role. And it was from Funcoland, I miss that place.

Wrestling games where the only games I would bother to pre-order, the rest I would ask for when Christmas came around.

Erm. Super Mario Bros. 3, I think. IIRC, TRU had a pre-order for it shortly after The Wizard came out. (Which I saw at a drive-in as a double feature with TMNT! 1989 rules, batches!)

Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger (Premeire Package) directly from Origin. Came in a movie reel tin along with a t-shirt (and a making of doc, I believe). I still have all of this.

I've only pre-ordered one game. It was one of the Castlevania DS games. I only did it because I wanted the 20th Anniversary music CD that was part of the preorder bonus bundle. The CD is great, so no regrets at all.

I pre-ordered both a Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64 from Toys R Us in 1996 before they came out....I'm glad I did, as I remember they didn't end up getting enough in stock for anyone who hadn't pre-ordered!

I'm pretty sure (almost 100%) that mine was Super Mario RPG on the SNES.

First game I remember pre-ordering for sure was Zelda: TooT. For the gold cartridge, of course.

Speaking of Sears, I remember when they sold their Atari 2600 compatible console.

Uh, Final Fantasy VIII I think. And I think that was because of some stupid cloth map that came as a pre-order bonus. After that, I don't think I pre-ordered anything until this year, when I noticed Amazon was giving away free money with a lot of pre-orders. I didn't bother before that time, because 1. I rarely care about a game enough to need to have it on release day (especially because the price will probably drop by the time I have time to play it), and 2. Because I've never had any trouble locating a game in a store on release day, so I don't see the point of making 2 trips.

I know I pre-ordered a N64, and possibly the SNES. Also did the Ocarina gold cartridge, as well as many other N64 carts like the Perfect Dark w/Ram Pak and Starfox with Rumble Pak.

Gran Turismo 3: A-spec is the only one I can ever remember.

That was the same game I remember preordering and waiting outside gamestop. After waiting an hour they told us we had to come back in the morning because they did not receive any copies of the game.

I preordered the Tekken 3 import for PS1. A local shop would do the mod for free with a preorder :)

I don't know if I can officially call it a pre-order, since it's not like they took my name/number/deposit/anything, but before Mortal Kombat 3 came out, I went to my local video game store and asked the guy to hold a SNES copy for me (my friends and I were regular shoppers/loiterers... every lunch-hour for 2 years), since I wasn't sure if I'd be able to buy it on release day or the day after. He held it for me, and I got it on the first night. $100 CAD. Didn't come with anything special, though. I bought my first PC game from that guy; a used copy of Phantasmagoria... before I even had a computer.

It should be a law that nostalgia thread responses include or be entirely composed of pictures.

I'm sorry, but I can't do that, as I loathe Brett Favre.

Madden NFL 09 (PS3)...it came with either a $10 or $20 Amazon gift card, so I pre-ordered 2 copies (one for me, one for cousin).

Actually I've only pre-ordered through Amazon. The others all being very recently: Batman AA, Uncharted 2, and CoD MW2. Can't beat paying with credit, bonus gift cards, promo credits, ECA discounts, free shipping, no tax.

I was going to say Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, because I thought it would be hard to find..however, on thinking about it, there's another one....Again, not a hardcore 'preorder' where i put money down, but I told the guy running the store (a friend of mine) to order it for me ahead of time, so I got it on release day.
It was...the Sega 32x, with Star Wars Arcade and Doom 32x.
In my defense, I bought it more to help him out (his store was struggling) than that I needed it that badly.

Since then, I think I've only preordered Nocturne and maybe two more game, can't remember which. Might have even been Digital Devil Saga. The other was Fallout 3: GotY edition, when it was on Target.com for 40 bucks. I don't even consider preordering unless I think the game will be hard to find (very few are), or it comes with a great bonus item, or a price cut - and even then, most games will drop in price in a month or two, and very few games instill in me the confidence to buy with that little information on it (no reviews, few gameplay videos, etc.)

First game I preordered was Wind Waker for the gamecube to get the special bonus. Or maybe it was Mario Kart for the bonus disc. Whichever came first.

N64 from Toys R Us back in the day. I didn't eat the entire semester, used all my lunch money on that bad boy.

my pre-order for COD:MW2 was my first pre-order. I have since pre-ordered God of War 3 with the bonus promo I got from MW2.

I remember going to TRU with a friend who'd pre-ordered Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time and the pre-order bonus was a free t-shirt. My friend put the t-shirt on immediately when the clerk handed it to him as he was checking out. I thought it was pretty funny.

Over 25 years of playing videogames, and I've never pre-ordered a single goddamn game.

I do remember beating up a few people who were wearing Zelda t-shirts - NERDS!!!

Spoiler:
I lied. I have pre-ordered one single solitary game for it's pre-order bonus, and that was Lunar Silver Star, which got you this punch-puppet for pre-ordering:

*edit* BTW, I never pre-ordered Zelda OoT, but I did get the gold cartridge, so I don't think you had to pre-order it for that - I think it was just the initial pressing of the game.
