Gaming Marathon Suggestions

So starting tomorrow I'll be on vacation for a week. On either Monday or Friday, I plan on doing a 24 hour marathon of gaming. The games have to be a theme of some sort like all Marathons do. An Action marathon, Platform marathon etc etc. Or do I do one long game for the entire day?

KOTOR because it can be done in a day (just) and once you get fatigued it won't affect your ability to play the game.

Do you play Rock Band 2? If you don't have it yet, this would be a good opportunity to get that Endless Setlist achievement/trophy, which takes about 6-7 hours. Go for Bladder of Steel, which means no pausing or failing. :)

The Beatles game has one for getting through it (breaks allowed) in 24 hours, but you probably already have that if you have the game.

I'd like to see how far you could get in Oblivion in 24 hours.

You'd have long since finish Fable 2 in less than 12 hrs then you'd have to spend half a day wandering around having everyone tell you how great you are.

Nope dont have any of the music games. I think I'm gonna go with either KOTOR, Mass Effect, or Jade Empire. Bioware makes such compelling games that dont bore me through a long playthrough.

Decker,

Oblivion is another close choice I keep thinking over. It's been so long since I last played it, I'll have to go back and see if it still holds up enjoyability.

I loved Mass Effect. I would recommend that game.

After thinking about it a bit, I believe RPGs would be best. An action game would be fatiguing to play for that long. Your hands would get tired after several hours (that's what she said!). Turn-based RPGs would be best, but I suppose the Bioware stuff could work. Maybe you could alternate between the two kinds.

I played through all four scenarios of Resident Evil 2 in a single day one time. (Leon A and B and Claire A and B.)

The only reason I'd really recommend KOTOR over Mass Effect is the FPS combat of ME requires you to be on your toes a bit more. Jade Empire would be fine too, I really liked that game despite general internet consensus. Once did a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. session on it.

Okay I made the decision to play KOTOR. I only played an hour or two when I first purchased it but for whatever reason I put it on my backlog. So it'll be at midnight or 1 am tonight that i start my marathon. Every four hours taking a half hour break. All stocked up on Energy drinks and plenty of snacks :) Wish me luck!

It seems like even the best games would fall apart after spending that much time with them. Well I should only speak for myself, but personally, when I game for any real length of time, I start to hate any game.

Kotor was pretty dope though -- the 7 hours I played of it anyway.

Man we really screwed up. In retrospect, we should have insisted that he play a 360 game so we could keep taps on his gamercard, game progress and online status.

Ah, good point. Hopefully we at least get some status updates.

And have my 360 blow up? -wink-

I wanted to get a lot of rest so i ended up starting at 6 am. Taking half hour breaks every four hours. Loving the game so far. I still haven't left the first planet (Taris) . I'm at the part where i have to enter the swoop race. Gamefaqs says there are eight more planets. Can this game actually be finished within 24 hours? It feels like a 40 hour game.

I forgot to mention I'm playing on the dark side with a female character. Currently at the part where I rescue Bastila from the slaver.

I'd give him a medal if he survived 24 minutes of Yaris.

But back on topic, one idea (for next time, I guess) is to run actual marathons in games that allow it. For example, boot up GTAIV, plot out a 26.2 mile course, and see how long it takes Niko to get through it on foot.

Or you could play that unreleased Penn and Teller's Smoke and Mirrors game for Sega CD. With an emulator, you could get around the pausing restriction, if you're not man enough. :)

Desert Bus is the best known minigame in the package, and was a featured part of Electronic Gaming Monthly's preview. The objective of the game is to drive a bus from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada in real time at a maximum speed of 45mph. The feat requires 8 hours of continuous play to complete, since the game cannot be paused.

The bus contains no passengers, and there is no scenery or other traffic on the road. The bus veers to the right slightly; as a result, it is impossible to tape down a button to go do something else and have the game end properly. If the bus veers off the road it will stall and be towed back to Tucson, also in real time. If the player makes it to Las Vegas, they will score exactly one point. The player then gets the option to make the return trip to Tucson—for another point (a decision they must make in a few seconds or the game ends). Players may continue to make trips and score points as long as their endurance holds out. Some players who have completed the trip have also noted that, although the scenery never changes, a bug splats on the windscreen about five hours through the first trip, and on the return trip the light does fade, with differences at dusk, and later a pitch black road where the player is guided only with headlights.

Finally got off of Taris :(

Chris_D 09-28-09 08:54 PM

Re: Gaming Marathon Suggestions

You're just taking your time with it which is fine! It actually took almost exactly 40 hours on my play through, Taris being about 8-9 hours. My second was less than 20. But, if you're enjoying the atmosphere that's great. Also, you could schedule another marathon session!
