Re: Epic Mickey Wii / Fall 2010
I'm thinking they made a big mistake by making this a Wii only game. I'm sure it'll sell fine, but the hardware limitations seem to be having an effect on this game. When looking at a game like SMG2, you'd think the system could just as easily handle Epic Mickey, but every preview I read includes words of caution about the graphics. That's a shame. I keep wondering if I should cancel my preorder and wait to see if a 360 or PS3 version gets made instead...

I agree, the early sketches had me expecting something a little different. The game itself looks kind of ordinary.

I finally found out some info on the Wii Remote charging station, it is a TRU exclusive and will be available on December 4th. $50. Just speculation but it seems like this might truly be a limited thing for any collectors out there.
This was on Facebook and I thought it was a pretty cool promotional video:

Re: Epic Mickey Wii / Fall 2010
there are quite a few reviews of people that got ahold of the game early. it seems most of them find the controls and camera frustrating. also they state that the platforming is dissapointing and the game is somewhat average.
i would be surprised if this gets higher than 7.5 or so from most game reviewers. shame as i was really looking forward to it. ill still try it, but first im going to get through the amazingness that is DKC Returns.

I was kind of surprised yesterday on X-Play, they had their Wii holiday buyer's guide episode, that Adam Sessler picked Kirby's Epic Yarn for his Wii game to get this holiday season.
Given that up to now he's looked and sounded like he just creamed his shorts whenever he's talked about Epic Mickey, I'm starting to wonder about the reviews. It seems like he has Warren Spector on at least once a month to talk about it so I would guess that if there are review copies out there, that he has played it.

Yeah, seems pretty quiet for a game that is due out a week from today. With all my K-mart credits I'm looking at dropping $15 on it, so I'm not too worried about it not being a perfect game.
However, you would think for someone wanting to do future Disney (DuckTales) titles, Specter would knock this one out of the park.

IGN review now up:
Closing Comments
Can a stellar story, fantastic characters, incredible cutscenes, and a solid core gameplay mechanic overcome numerous, fundamental problems with controls, the camera, and even continuity? In the end Warren Spector’s team has created a mightily impressive foundation. They’ve managed to get the toughest stuff right – it seemed almost impossible to make Mickey Mouse matter once again. They’ve even managed to take a nearly dormant character in Oswald and introduce him in a spectacular way, making him one of the most memorable video game characters of the year. And yet the “easier” stuff – finding a camera system that works, finding a control scheme that’s suitable – is flawed to the point where the larger experience becomes damaged. If story and character matter more to you than technical details, or if you and your family are Disney fans, many of these problems won’t matter. Ultimately, the positive elements of Epic Mickey do manage to make this worth a shot. Going in with the proper level of expectation should manage to keep some of the WiiMote throwing to a minimum… just keep that wrist strap tight.

Rating Description

9.0 Presentation
A great experience, from Pixar-worthy storytelling and characterization to wonderfully expressive cutscenes. Charming from beginning to end.
8.5 Graphics
Smart design choices here allow for some great environments and designs that unfortunately still tax the Wii from time to time. Prepare for some choppiness.
8.0 Sound
A great soundtrack is offset slightly by the lack of voice acting, though the squeaks and grunts from characters do have their charms.
7.5 Gameplay
Choice and consequence can make for some great moments, and the idea of paint and thinner is inspired. Still, the camera and control issues hold everything back significantly.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
A 15 hour adventure with an ending that will fluctuate depending on how you solve problems in Wasteland. Tons of collectibles will make thorough gamers come back for more.

BTW, I picked up the Paintbrush-chuck yesterday, and well, it's not nearly as cool looking as in screenshots. The wood grain looks pretty cheap. It's going under the Christmas tree though, so I didn't open it to physically check it out.
Anyone that's interested, it's on sale for $15 at K-Mart this week. I used a $15 credit on it making it $0, so I picked it up anyway despite it's cheap appearance.

It's $14.99 but the cashier manually put in the coupon to force it through. She didn't catch on that the penny was probably what was preventing it from scanning.

No dice at 2 stores. Oh, well. I ended up getting a classic pro controler instead as I have 3 chucks, but no classic.

This game looks good and would be a must-buy if it weren't for the fucking Wii. Not sure why this decision was made.

I think he's saying that this seems more like a core gamer type of game and would benefit from HD graphics and a different control set up if released on the 360 or PS3. I would prefer that as well. This game would look amazing in HD.

It got a 6 out of 10 from Gamespot, but I guess haters gonna hate... or something like that. They gave one of my favorite platformers on the PSX (Skullmonkeys) a similarly shitty score (5.0 out of 10.)
