Happy Birthday Dreamcast!

So tomorrow is Dreamcasts' tenth anniversary. I was in high school when the system launched. My parents didn't want me having a new system. I wanted it so bad I paid a classmate to order it with his debit card and I had to hide it in my room for awhile. First game I had for it was Sonic Adventure which is still my favorite Dreamcast game.

What are your fond memories of the Dreamcast?

Re: Happy Birthday Dreamcast!

I loved my DC. One of my favorite systems. I need to get another one. I remember the launch day very well. I was in middle school yet and it was the same day as the '99 VMAs. Good times.

I remember the hype leading up to the event. Aside from the garbage controller, I loved the system. I discovered one of my favorite games of all time, Shenmue, on it...and the NBA2K series kicked ass.

Re: Happy Birthday Dreamcast!

I still think the Dreamcast is the best looking console ever.

I played through Sonic Adv and the Sonic stages were a lot of fun.

The Power Stone games are about the only fighting games I ever got into.

And I wish the NFL 2k series was still around

The controllers were somewhat goofy.

The DC was the only system I ever got on launch. I sold it when it was announced Sega wasn't going to support it anymore. I just didn't think there was enough games to justify keeping it.

Ahhh the Dreamcast, my favorite console of all time. My fondest memories are from playing Shenmue, man I love that game.

I was going to say I could help you out with that, but I don't want to be accused of being vulgar.

I miss the Dreamcast. It's still one of my all time favorite game consoles. I remember seeing NFL 2K for the very first time. My jaw dropped to the floor. I wish it could have stayed around longer than it did.

Re: Happy Birthday Dreamcast!

The Dreamcast was an awesome system. I played the hell out of Fire Pro D.

Also, Power Stone was great, as was the NFL2K series. Shenmue remains one of the only RPG's I've ever played all the way through. Working on the docks was agonizing.

I STILL play with my DCast, it's sitting right next to my monitor. VGA the ONLY way to play Soul Calibur!

Re: Happy Birthday Dreamcast!

Reminds me... I should give Shenmue II another run-through.

Remember when Gamestop imported the game for their customers from the UK via preorder after it was decided not to release it in the US? Oh man, I get the feeling they totally would not do that nowadays!

Toy Commander is definitely going in the DC sometime today though. Best. Multiplayer. Game. Ever. heh.

Re: Happy Birthday Dreamcast!

I can't think of anything other than Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi that really made me care about the Dreamcast.

Sorry, I know that's sacrilege for a gamer like me.

I got my DC when they announced no more support and it dropped to $50. Played the heck out of it and sold it for more than I had in it.

It was a great system that died too soon, and set the stage for many things we see this generation.

Re: Happy Birthday Dreamcast!

Loved the DC. Still remember when the DC games were looking better than what the PS2 had. Still feel like it wasn't until Final Fantasy X that there was a game that couldn't really have been done on DC (without some compromises). Certainly, games like DOA2 were best of DC. And Soul Calibur was probably the best looking fighter for quite some time.

I actually really enjoyed Grandia 2 even though it wasn't one of the well rated DC games. Also, loved playing HotD2 with 2 light guns at once. Spent hours doing that.

Still have mine, still love mine. Still hate the ear piercing squeal of the dead battery VMUs when you power it up.

Re: Happy Birthday Dreamcast!

Ah yeah, Shenmue was great. I never got that far in Shenmue 2 for some reason but loved playing all the way through 1. Except for maybe the part time job at the port.

Wasn't Ikaruga originally on DC? Several other shmups as well.

I still have my DC hooked up...but I don't play any DC games on it. It turns out that having a Windows OS makes it useful for other things.

Yes, but it came out the GameCube literally a few months later.

I can't even remember one being of any particular note right now. I'm not entirely discounting them, it's just that even then I had a far better time grabbing Cave games on the import PS2 in that same time frame (and still play them).

I loved Shenmue II also...if you can...get back and finish it. Still hoping for the day when we see another release in the series on the PS3/Xbox 360.

Re: Happy Birthday Dreamcast!

I remember being blown away by Panzer Dragoon. I can't really remember what else I had on it, but I don't think I kept the system very long.
