What's the best, simple tower defense game?

I also think of Dune II as a tower defense game, if that matters. I need a relatively simple tower defense game. I like the collecting of money for better weapons, for building, etc. But I don't want to have to read some manual.

Obviously, liking Dune II, I have looked at the Comand and Conquer series, and they just do nothing for me.

It's not.

Dune II is a real-time strategy (RTS) game. The best ones are probably those made by Blizzard (Starcraft, Warcraft series), Ensemble (Age of Empires, Age of Kings, Age of Myths), and Big Huge Games (Rise of Nations series). All are commercial prodcuts:

In terms of tower defense, Desktop Tower Defense:

http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/game.asp

is available in both a free web-based version and a commercial version. Plants vs. Zombies is another good one -- it's available through PopCap.

So because you don't understand the difference between two genres of games, I'm stupid?

There are a couple of Dune II remakes listed on the Dune II wikipedia page. I have no idea how faithful any of them are to the original, but you might want to give one or more a try.

That's not even in the top 50 reasons I have written down over the years.

Plants VS Zombies is great.

Thanks, I will look that up. I may have to cross a few reasons off the list (some overlap a bit).

I had a ton of fun with Defense Grid: The Awakening. Game, and demo if you want to try it out, are available on Steam. One of the best tower defense games I've ever played.

Dune II is one of the greatest RTS games ever. I loved that game.

If you want to play tower defense though in RTS play the Koreans in Age of Empires II.

(Koreans and their cheap towers that slowly strangle off the map... grrr...)

GemCraft is another free, web-based tower defense game that is pretty good.

I've heard good things about Pixeljunk Monsters, if you happen to have a PS3.

Pixeljunk Monsters is a brilliant mix of Tower Defense and collection...and is also a great coop game.

It gets my vote!

I bought this on sale through Steam. It didn't seem to be obviously easy, and I didn't want to do much learning to play. I'll try to give it another chance.

It's not as easy as say Plant vs Zombies to get into. But it's a great game overall.

Agreed.

Desktop Tower Defense is the only tower defense game that I ever got addicted to but I haven't played that many.

Desktop Tower Defense and Pixel Junk Monsters. I'd say PJM is easily one of the Top 10 games of this generation.

Looking forward to the South Park TD coming out soon. Also I really need a Plants vs Zombies sequel. No idea why I get so addicted to these games. When I get a ps3 PJM will be purchased right away.

That one isn't bad, but instead of that one you can own nine equal or better ones for the same total price.

Re: What's the best, simple tower defense game?

A neat little XBLA tower defense game just came out called Defense Grid. I played the trial and thought it was a decent effort. Probably not worth 800 points but maybe 400 if it ever goes on sale.

He has Defense Grid on the PC already. I'm not sure how many levels the trial included, but it is easily worth $10 on xbla. I played the PC version a few months ago it's by far the best tower defense game I've played. the later levels get much more in depth with a lot more srategy involved in where you place the towers. A lot of levels are built around you creating the path for the enemies by where you place the towers.
