DivX on PS3?

What's the best way to play divX avi files on the PS3?

I use a media server that streams from computer. I'm doing right now in fact.

Media server FTW! I use TVersity. It's not the greatest program in the world, but it's free and it gets the job done. I think you can also set up a server using Windows Media Player.

Before I got that up and running though, I'd just load the files onto a thumb drive and watch them using that. It worked pretty well too.

Re: DivX on PS3?

I got sick of being told that my files were using an unsupported codec and bought a WD TV Player (for MKV, XviD/DivX playback) I never understood why the 360 would play a lot of stuff the PS3 wouldn't and the PS3 would play stuff the 360 wouldn't, stupid selective codecs :(

And yeah, you can use Windows Media Player for streaming, I think it works better than TVersity as you don't have to fight it nearly as much. (I never had much luck with TVersity, thing would never update my libraries.) Though TVersity also offers transcoding.

i just play the divx files from an external hdd... streaming is fine, but why bother turning on the computer (in that case why don't you just watch it on the computer instead).

i also have learned how to put subtitles on the divx files, pretty cool stuff.

Streaming divx and avi files to the PS3 "broke" with the last update for some media servers (may just need to upgrade media server firmware if it's available), so read up on it before committing to one.

^ oh yeah, i forgot about that... well, i don't stream so i don't have those problems, but yeah, i remember some folks have trouble with the divx and avi files.

Ok say I have a DivX AVI on an external drive.

What next?

I put them onto a USB flash drive and play them from there.

Play them with what?

As long as the external drive is FAT32 and USB, you can just plug it into one of the USB ports and play the files directly on the PS3. There is a built-in video player, works swimmingly for most divx/xvid files.

I just pop a CF card into my PS3 and play them most of the time.

I put 2 DivX avis in a 2GB USB stick, plugged it in the PS3, and it detected the device. But it says there are no titles when I try to look inside :(

Re: DivX on PS3?

What am I doing wrong? I tried plugging my SD memory card via USB and it viewed images but didn't view anything (images, mp3, video) on the root dir.

Also, it detects my USB memory stick but sees nothing inside.

Yeah I was going to mention the triangle button is your friend on the PS3. It has solved many of my issues. If you put them in a folder named video they show up right away.

Interesting, i didn't know about the triangle trick, i always thought you need to put into the video folder.
