Fallout New Vegas Announced

Not much detail, but apparently Bethesda just announced the title with Obsidian developing.

http://kotaku.com/5219584/new-fallout-announced

Fallout New Vegas was announced moments ago during a Bethesda press conference in London.

The new game was revealed by Bethesda's Pete Hines who said that the publisher is working with Obsidian Entertainment on the title.

It will be coming out next year for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

"It is not a sequel to Fallout 3," Hines said. "It's simply another Fallout game in that universe."
Not any more info from other sites either, but plenty reporting it.

Although it's great news, I hope this doesn't mean they're not working on a new Elder Scrolls game...

Since Obsidian is actually developing it, then I doubt it will have any effect on whether or not they are working on a new Elder Scrolls.

wtf?? that came out from nowhere!

Is that supposed a game like Fallout 3?
Or is something totally different that uses the name Fallout?

The good news is that Obsidian Entertainment has a lot of experience developing RPGs.

I heard it's gonna be a music game with elements of Fallout thrown in. Rocking out on your PipBoy!

Maybe they'll even include the option for PS3 owners to get the downloadable content this time.

One of the comments I read brought up the comparison to GTA and how there's Vice City and San Andreas that aren't really sequels. This could be something similar... not really a continuation of the main Fallout story, but just a different situation going on in a different location.

I see. That could be interesting if they can make it work. I mean we are talking about a game that's going to be as big as Fallout 3, and not like a DLC.

I never played Fallout 1 and 2 but is this any different from the 3rd one? Meaning is there a timeline difference between the first sequels and the 3rd one? I thought it was just a different place.

The first two Fallout games take place on the west coast while Fallout 3 takes place on the east coast.

There is a timeline difference as well. Fallout 2 takes place about 60 years after Fallout 1. Fallout 3 takes place about 30 years after Fallout 2. So all in all the trilogy spans roughly 100 years.

I'm excited for more Fallout, but I get nervous anytime I see KOTOR II associated with a game I enjoyed.

To be fair, KOTOR2 being an unfinished mess is the fault of Lucasarts, not Obsidian. Lucasarts wanted the game out in time for the Christmas shopping season whether the game was finished or not.

So I guess this means I better finish Fallout 3... I kinda got burnt out on the gaming thing so I haven't touch my PS3 for games in a few months! :(

I don't see why you would be getting that vibe

It's not like they're making a different game, and it's being made by guys who were responsible for the original Fallout games and the old Black Isle Studios.

Fallout 3 was supposed to be set in the west originally before Bethesda took over, it seems like this game will be what it was supposed to be before.

I know, I just suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder when it comes to KOTOR II. Just thinking about it curls me up into a fetal position...

This is great news. Just think of the possibilities.

Maybe you come from a group that lived in a Money Vault and not an actual Vault-Tec vault, or you could come across a group that lived in a money Vault?

The chance to battle in old casinos or maybe some casinos that groups have tried to fix up?

Bunny Ranch???? How about a Ghoul Bunny Ranch?

Instead of a cult of wannabe vampires, a cult of wannabe Elvis impersonators?

A gambling aspect similar to Fable 2, but hopefully better?

You can get married in Fallout Vegas?

Cabaret shows?

I am so looking forward to this!!!!

I'm curious to see how they're going to handle the PS3 marketing of this title, given the debacle related to DLC for that console and the resulting legions of highly disappointed customers.

Honestly, I doubt there'll be that much fallout.

Haha, get it??

Nice.

I was actually questioning the claim that the PS3 has "legions" of fans.

Fallout Hollywood could be cool. Old movie studio sets and such.

Re: Fallout New Vegas Announced

I'm still looking for a possible Fallout game set outside the US.

I guess the whole Fallout mystique comes from the twisted classic Americana vibe - but it would be interesting to see if they could meld it with any other post-war nostalgia factors in other parts of the world....

Thinking for example of post-war Japan - especially after watching "Always"/"Always II" - and the whole Kaiju scene.

Europe would be really interesting as well since there are so many recognizable monuments there as well as long-standing historical structures, castles, etc (kinda like what they mentioned in World War Z) - but I know you couldn't just automatically transfer the gameplay while losing the original theme and still call it a Fallout game.

(not to mention that any of those nostalgia factors would be far, far less recognizable to most US gameplayers).

Re: Fallout New Vegas Announced

taken from Computerandvideogames.com

• Similar to Dragon Age: Origins, at character creation the player can select from different background stories. The first few hours of the game are different depending on which background you choose, and you get some unique perks based on your background when the main game begins.

• One background story is shown, Chinese Agent. The background story takes place before the bombs fell. The player is part of a team of Crimson Dragoons infilitrating Hoover Dam. You manage to sneak through the Americans’ defenses, set explosives, and head to an extraction point, but your escape is cut off by American soldiers in Power Armor. The player and other survivors of the Crimson Dragoons take refuge in a cave in the canyons, where they commit hari kari with cyanide capsules. The player about to do the same when the bombs fall. The background story ends an indeterminate time later, when the player exits the cave, removes his helmet, and sees his ghoulish reflection in the waters of the Colorado River.

• The background story segues into character creation. The player can customize the appearance of the ghoul, and you see you start the game with two unique perks. One, similar to the Ghoul Mask in Fallout 3, makes Feral Ghouls non-aggro. The other makes the player immune to radiation sickness and allows the player to discharge accumulated radiation in a blast similar to a Glowing Ghoul, healing the player and any mutants while damaging all non-mutants in range.

• By default, the Chinese Agent has the skills Sneak, Small Arms, and Explosives tagged and SPECIAL stats set, although the player can modify their tagged skills and stats if they don’t like the template.

• One character background option is Lone Wanderer. This selection has no background story or template and is a complete blank slate for players.

• The SPECIAL system used will be similar to Fallout 3, but skills will be harder to cap and one character will not be able to become a master of all skills. The article is not very specific because apparently it’s something the developers are still tweaking.

• Gambling will return, but not as a skill. Your Luck stat will effect gambling results. You can attempt to cheat at cards using your Sneak skill or hack slot machines using your Science skill.

• There will be vehicles. The desert of New Vegas dwarfs the Capital Wasteland and you will need transportation to get around and explore it. You will acquire a vehicle several hours into the main quest. You can customize your vehicle with parts bought at shops or won through racing circuits and quests. Vehicles will not be common, but you will encounter road gangs, merchant caravans, and other vehicles in the wastes. The open desert is home to some very large mutant creatures, like giant radscorpions and sandworms, that will attack your vehicle.

• New Vegas has a coliseum run by a slaver gang called the Caesar’s Legion. You can gamble on and participate in arena fights.
