Man i was a dumbass for paying near full price for this game last year. STill haven't got around to playing it. I finally got some self control this year and stopped buying new releases.

So how do you guys play these games? I tried Fallout 3 on PS3 a while back, and didn't make it very far. I was getting really frustrated with the quests. Seems like there were too many ways to solve each quest, and the rewards varied so much depending on how you did it. It got to the point where I was reading the walkthrough of each quest online before I did it, to make sure i got the best reward.
Anyway, picked up New Vegas since it was on sale (PC this time) and just starting to get into it. I'm guessing I'll run into the same problem, though

2 more issues I'm having:
1) Seems like it's REALLY easy to miss something. I did read the walkthrough for the first 2 quests to make sure I got off on the right track. It told me to make sure I pick up some cigarette butts by my grave, as I'll need them later. There's NO WAY I ever would have even noticed those were there without the walkthrough.
2) OMG these's NPCs talk FOREVER. I feel like I have to fully exhaust every single chat tree to make sure I get all the quests. Coming from WoW, where you just have to click "accept" to get the quest, and maybe read the details later, it's quite a change.

What cigarette butts ?
I'm serious. Agree with atxbomber don't worry about guides, just enjoy the game. Yeah, you may miss stuff here and there but that won't deter your enjoyment of the game.
Oh and I use guides for these games too, I have the official guides from Prima, but most of the time I only use the big map that's included, or if I don't what to do in one quest, but with time most quests are self explanatory.

I don't remember any cigarette butts, and I got all the achievements in the game. I looked them up, they really aren't needed, as there are multiple ways to do the quest that helps you out in. I suggest like others putting down the guide. I don't think this (or Fallout 3) were meant to be played as linear games. There's very little you can't go back and do--there is a point of no return but it is late in the game, pretty obvious, and if you have at least a couple of saves even that won't matter. Just go ahead and play and after you get pretty far along maybe break out the guide to see if there is anything you want/need and how to get it--you'll likely be able to go back and get it if you really want to.

Yeah, I've been trying my best to avoid going back to this game and getting all the DLC until a GOTY edition or at least an XBL sale, but that may be a day-one download. Looks fantastic.

Re: Fallout New Vegas Announced
So yesterday I went back and read all 37 pages of this thread (at work, of course, and on my phone. ugh.), mostly avoiding spoilers past where I currently am, and glad I spent the time on it. I wouldn't have fixed Ed-E nearly as soon as I did by just getting the right parts instead of boosting my science/repair skills. Also picked up some other pointers. Thanks.
Currently I'm at level 10 and 25 hours in. Sure, that's a slow pace, but I've spent most of my time hunting, scavenging, and exploring. Last night I think I completed only my 5th quest. Now that I have both Ed-E and Boone with me, though, the game's much easier.
And, boy, am I glad they nixed the idea to add a driving component. That's just because I totally suck at driving games. (I absolutely love how L.A. Noire does it, giving you the option to skip past a chase.)
Oh, and buried earlier in the thread, someone asked who's playing with a female character. Yep, put me on that list, too. When games like these give you the choice, I usually create a woman. There's just something about a kick-ass chick, you know? I wonder what I saw during my childhood to compel me to always do that with a game.
I'm really loving FNV, but I've got a ways to go. And I really want to play Fallout 3 now, but that'll have to be my "fall game". This one will likely consume the rest of my summer playing time.

Re: Fallout New Vegas Announced
I finished it tonight and didn't have any problems. A lot of people at the Bethesda forums are reporting the vendor bug you mentioned, though.
This is my favorite DLC for any game in a very long time. There are some great rewards and perks as well. An extra 40% damage against Cazadores? Yes please!

Thanks! I'm enjoying it immensely. Or I was until this evening. After putting about 60 hours into the game, I put it on today and it loaded...and loaded...and loaded...and loaded. After several reboots - of both the game and my Xbox - I still couldn't get past the initial load screen. After about 45 minutes of this, I put on a different game and my Xbox worked fine. Is this a known issue? It's never happened to me before. (My game has the most recent patch, btw.)
If it's unfixable, oh well. I definitely got $10 worth out of the game.
I really wish I would've known that your companion loses his stored items if he/she/it goes into a casino. I had loaded Boone up with some expensive and heavy weapons and noticed they were gone when I went to sell them, post-casino trip.
For the better part of 2 weeks "Johnny Guitar" has been playing on a loop in my head. I guess there are worse songs to be stuck there.
Also, I had never heard an old version of "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie", but I was already familiar with the Asylum Street Spankers' take on it:
<iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/zCx53LYtqD8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The song really gets cookin' around the 2:50 mark (and the lyrics take a NSFW turn).

This has happened to a lot of people with high-level characters after the latest patch, myself included. There's an easy fix: load up a save file of a separate low-level character (or create a new character if you don't have one, and make a save file). From your game with that low-level character, go to the pause menu and load the save file of your other, high-level character. Works every time, from what I've seen and heard. Generally after doing it once, you won't have to do it again, and you'll be able to load normally from the main menu.
Hope that helps!

Man the Legendary Botfly in Old World Blues kicked my ass. I didn't expect it to be a challenge at all but it killed me in 3 hits (bear in mind that I'm a level 44 with the Remants power armor). Next time around I had to keep a finger on the B button so I could take stimpaks at a moment's notice (ended up using 12 before I killed it).
