It should be a new server, but if not, send me a message on PSN.

Play nice.

Drop in whenever.

Another good showing this week!!! We played from 6 till about 10 with 8 people in during the heart of the night. With my bandwidth, I can only host 8, so hopefully nobody was trying to get in and couldn't.

Thanks to those of you who came out this week. Off the top of my head, I remember seeing:

Myself - obviously
Chew - who's getting better
Cloudvader - whose FPS skills are transferring nicely for ground combat
DRG - our mystery guest, who was doing quite well
EdStein - who stuck around for some 1:1 Warhawk tips
KenKeith - who was around for a few hours
Ravenous - good to see you in there
I.Flores - Sorry brother. Believe me, I know how hard it is to fight Warhawk habits.
Ed's friend - Who unfortunately was way too good
My buddy eroc - who fits right in in terms of skill level and is a good natured dude

I missed spiderbite this week. :(

...apologies to anyone I forgot. It was a bit chaotic here and there!

On a few of the maps, I took an active role in just keeping folks on the ground, which is where you learn your core skills. I was just hovering above the playfield and taking a rocket launcher shot every now and then, which I didn't mind at all. Folks need to practice locking that thing on to Warhawks.

To make up for that, I loaded a Warhawk only map, and hopefully everybody enjoyed the ability to just putter around a bit. On that map, I focused on the one person who can fly a bit (eroc) and did my best to keep him occupied/dead.

Next week: Team Death Match and Capture the Flag maps! We need to keep 8 in to make it work though.

That's hard to see from this end.:(

I did try to get the bluetooth headset working this week. I didn't know until about an hour in that there was another setting in the PS3 menu I never even touched: I just thought I had to pair it and it would work, I didn't know I had to have it active as well.

Unfortunately, once I had the settings right, it sounded like crap and I didn't use it.

chess, you by far have the best headset from what I hear. I know you said it was a wired Logitech. Do you have the model number?

My bluetooth headset (motorola cellphone style) was hit or miss. Once connected it worked ok but it picks up any sound in the room. Once I turned it off I couldn't get it to reconnect without deleting and re-scanning. I'm going to pick up a wired usb headset this week which should work better.

Games were fun. Would have been better with more people. Some of those maps are huge and beg for a lot of people to make them enjoyable.

 Good times. You know your Warhawk Chess! It was fun getting some trophies on accident and trying out hit and runs.

It took awhile to get my mic working I think. Did I sound okay? Its the first time using it. I should have it set to the deeper slower voice setting as I have a habit of talking fast. I also had to push L3 to talk as I have a habit of cussing and talking to others in the room so I didnt want an open mic.

Team Death and flag sounds fun!

I believe this is the one:

But really any halfway decent USB headset will work quite well.

You can adjust the sensitivity in both the PS3 accessories menu and in the Warhawk "sound" menu...but yeah, at the end of the night, I could hear your kids better than I could hear you, which means the sensitivity was way too high.

I'm limited to 8 by bandwidth. My PS3 is actually acting as the server, and I think having it on Wi-Fi slows it down some. I'm considering running a cable from my router for Warhawk night just to see if I can increase the capacity.

I have mixed feelings about the "big" (those really aren't the "big maps" at all) maps. I actually like the slower pace, as I'd rather "hunt" than "react"...if that makes sense.

I honestly can't remember how you sounded. I kind of remember confirming that I could hear you, and that was it...which if true, means the background noise couldn't have been too bad.

I recall you sounding OK, but I don't remember you talking too much...probably because you had to hit L3! :)

Great. I'm just a bit nervous that there won't be enough people in the game when the maps come up...so try to make it people!

Finally, I forgot to mention that I also missed Murray this week.

I was looking forward to hearing another wired headset, which I've gotta say, sounded phenomenal.

I ordered a refurb Logitech 350 for about $18 shipped:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Premi...7810747&sr=8-3

Two Questions:

I see you need points and/or trophies to start customizing your character a bit more than the basics. What gives me those points? Kills? Time?

For the team maps: how do you tell who your teammates are?

That's a REALLY nice one...look forward to hearing it. I can't for the life of me figure out why Sony doesn't throw in a cheap USB headset with the PS3. I guess they want to encourage blu-tooth, but it just doesn't sound as good IMO.

It's by rank, and each rank has unique criteria which are spelled out in the Warhawk menus. The criteria are based on total kills or total points and usually there's some specific weapon/vehicle requirement, which is intended to develop your skills.

For the team maps: how do you tell who your teammates are?
Red or Blue. It will be pretty obvious, but I'll set the maps so you don't damage your teammates. I think grenades and rockets will still hurt them, but I'm not 100%. Honestly, it's been a while.

I'm really looking forward to the two capture the flag maps I have in mind. Both are a lot of fun.

I'm glad you asked. I need to borrow a LONG cable from work today.

Honestly, I'm worried that we'll even get the 8 we need to fill out the teams.

Glad you got that headset Chew...just make sure you change your settings in the PS3 accessories menu...and you can turn your input level way down with a wired set. You just want the level to go up 1 or 2 bars on the tester when you speak at normal volume.

Some of my local friends are planning a Warhawk night tomorrow night. It was going to be a local match and not online. I was going to take my PS3 and game over to a friends house. However, the weather here is supposed to be heavy snow today and tomorrow so if the roads are bad I might not go. Either way I'll be playing Warhawk tomorrow night.

It's still fun on a split screen, but seeing where everybody is does take some of the fun out of it. There's nothing like looking over 1 screen and seeing yourself on the wrong end of a scope!

6 CST actually, and we've been going till 10-11 CST. Hopefully folks will play a bit later than last week.

This week, I'll be spending most of my time trying to keep the teams balanced I suspect.

I was at Sears today and they had Warhawk with headset on clearance for $10! So I ended up buying it and was wondering if i could be added to the clan or whatever its called? I've never played a ps3 game online so this will be my first experience. My psn id is bauer83.

and how the hell do you wear the headset??? Cant for the life of me figure the damn thing out

chess 03-27-09 11:31 PM

Re: Any interest in a Weekly Warhawk night?

Welcome. That's a great deal.

If you read through the thread, all will be answered. You just need to synch the headset with your PS3. That headset is usable, but takes some tweaking to get it right. Just be sure not to turn the input up too high.

We're not a clan, though I guess we could be someday...just a bunch of novices playing strictly for fun. I just moderate and drop the banhammer on anybody who's too good or taking it too seriously...or both.

I'd run through the tutorials before you come on at a minimum.

Yeah, it ain't too comfortable. That knob part goes in your ear, the hook behind your ear and the front points towards your mouth. Enjoy.
Keep your eye out for a sale or clearance on the Endwar set with the "official" PS3 headset. It's much better and much more comfortable.

Okay I synced my mic up,downloaded updates and am ready to go tonight.

I just checked out online deathmatch a few minutes ago. Very fun stuff. After a few matches i finally got the hang of it. My favorite weapon is the knife. I was able to pull off 45 kills in one match! But man people are sore losers. I kept getting called f a g throughout the whole thing. Was pretty funny pissing off the mouthbreathers  Do they not like the knife or something?

Cant wait to play you guys.

Pretty weak showing tonight. :(

Myself and 5-6 others came out (will list tomorrow), but I think 4 was the most we had at any one time.

Still, I went from 6-10:30 and always had somebody on. I played a lot of 2 on 1, and the extra challenge was nice, but I'd much rather play 4 on 4.

I'm not giving up yet...especially since I look forward to this all week!

edstein 03-29-09 02:07 AM

Re: Any interest in a Weekly Warhawk night?

Sorry I missed you guys tonight. My party was pretty fun. We two PS3's with 4 people on each. Both projected on 100" screens. And we had 2 other people online for a total of 10. Played from 7 to 12.

This game has some weak points compared to other shooters I've played like COD and Halo series. First the auto aiming is really cheap. You don't hardly have to try to stay locked on to someone. Second, the spawning really sucks. Most of the time you spawn right on an enemy. With nothing but a knife and pistol at first it makes it difficult to switch to the knife before you're spawn killed The other thing I don't like is switching weapons. I don't like that you have to move your thumb from the analog stick over to the D-pad to switch. Gears of War is like that but you don't have 8 options to pick from either. These are just nit picks though. The game is still pretty fun. I'll try to make it again next weekend.

Well, that would be the case on Deathmatch only, because in the rest of the game types you get to choose where to spawn and you ONLY spawn in a friendly base.
As for being spawn killed, you get a couple of seconds of invisibility, more than enough time to switch to the blade before you actually spawn and become stealth to radar the moment you get into the game.
Also, if you compare this game to ANY FPS, you won't enjoy it as much. That's why I try not to.

Re: Any interest in a Weekly Warhawk night?

I had a lot of fun last night. One other complaint is there were times when it took a few seconds for the name of the character to pop up. I didn't want to shoot my teammate so i waited but the other character stated gunning me down. I wonder if its the speed of my dsl that makes things a bit slower? Anyone have the same problem?
