Maybe another way to do this is set up something in-advance that we can try to plan on as a community.

Pittsburgh Penguins NHL team. I would guess, being from Minnesota you would have heard a little about hockey growing up, like the former North Stars and now the Wild.

Yeah, I went to one of their last games and some guy got the crowd riled up to shout, "NORM SUCKS! NORM SUCKS!" because the owner was moving the North Stars. The Wild's a completely different team, actually; the North Stars moved to Texas and became the Dallas Stars in the early-1990s and The Wild started up in like 2000, I think.

I played football in middle/high school for a while and I appreciate the skill it takes to play that game well (even watch a Sunday afternoon game, from time to time, if my wife already has it on TV when I come home from work) and I was into hockey a little bit in middle school (I think I just liked wearing a socially-acceptable hat with a shark on it), but sports were just never my thing. The closest I come to enjoying a sport is watching a great game of baseball on TV or in the stadium... though I'm always fascinated by how often rougher contact sport fans of football or hockey or whatever roll their eyes and say baseball is boring or isn't that much of a sport. :shrug:

I see teenagers get more pressure from their coaches to commit, commit, commit and win, win, win to the point they're scared to miss even one practice because the coach threatens to bench them the entire season. This emphasis on single-minded focus above everything else (let's face it - even academics, for some coaches) and competition over participation or even having fun just really turns me off. When I see that happening at the middle/high school years, it doesn't make me all that enthusiastic watching professional sports, either. I know there's not necessarily a causation between the two sporting worlds but it still bugs me.

My arguement to those that say baseball isn't a sport is usually to do 2 things. Try and hit a ball off of a pitcher who throws a good curve and some heat. Hardest thing in sports to do. Then take some heat high and inside and tell me it doesn't scare the pants off of you or hurt if it hits you. I pitched, played infield and was a catcher. - As a matter of fact I was the only guy on the team who could catch for our hardest throwing pitcher he threw 90-95 on the radar but was wild and eventually broke his leg.
There's good coaches and bad coaches. I had both. My High School baseball coach was a redneck douche who hated me and definitely played favorites. My two high school football head coaches and my track coach were great guys who helped guys use their talents to get great opportunities to move on in life.

Fuck. I could hit anyone's fastball. But as soon as you threw a decent curve up there, you got in my head and that fastball seemed like it came at me at 100+.


I had more than my share of bad coaches. This is also attributable to being raised on baseball and knowing more about the game than a number of my coaches. These were also the belligerent assholes that cared more about asserting their authority than listening to the voices of their players. I got blackballed from my high school team even though I started in centerfield and hit 2nd or 5th for the same school district's summer travel/all-star team. I had to switch schools in order to play. After I'd gone on to college this particular coach was fired for the same verbal and physical abuse against his players I'd witnessed with regularity five years prior. Then at college I found myself faced with a carbon copy of that guy. I had to make a decision to endure someone that would probably make me hate the game or quit. I quit. And I still regret it even though that asshole was fired during my junior year for throwing his shortstop against the fence. There's just too many of these "instructors" who think that the best way to assert their authority is with the latent threat of verbal or physical abuse.

My brother just bought a PS3 (you may remember him as the guy who, while visiting my pad last spring, nabbed chess's dogtags in BFBC2 within his five minutes of his first time playing the game) and I think he picked up a copy of Warhawk, too. If we're on this week and he can join us, is it possible we could please play without the DLC map packs so he can play, too?

Just a heads up...I haven't been around at all for the last couple months, but that doesn't mean I'm out forever.

In the last few weeks of August, there was a big push at work where I was doing paperwork all night to get everything in, then I started classes in the fall...one of which was online. I have never taken an online class before, but it has been brutal, I should have just taken the in person option, but I figured, how hard could a class in the Sociology of Education be?

Fuck that...for the last 6-weeks, all I do is read thick, post-constructionalist theory on education...which I barely understand and then have to answer questions and discuss with people who are in that program and are super passionate about it...it is fucking killing me. I can't relax enough to set a night aside to play right now.

Once classes are done, I’ll be back. I’m not taking classes in the spring at all, because my wife is pregnant and due in March…I guess we will see how that affects my VG time, but if I have a night (or nights) set aside, my wife will be cool with it.

I’m still planning on buying BF3 and MW3 and I’ll definitely be down for Warhawk when people play, but I’m going to wait on Starhawk to see if it catches on.

I should be able to play tonight if anyone is interested, but don't fire it up just for me. My nights are freed up now that the Tigers are eliminated from the postseason.

I really don't have any room in my budget for new games right now, so Batman:AC, BF3, and Uncharted 3 are going to have to wait (unless maybe Sony puts UC3 up on sonyrewards.com, I should have enough rewards points to get a game after that set of tires I just put on my Sony Card). So I may just dive back into BFBC2 (which I haven't played in a long while) for a bit. I may also be messing around with the mutiplayer on Uncharted 2 soon, if anyones interested in digging that out.

Sure thing OG, are you in education? I’d be interested in what you think of these people and if you have read any of these books.

We started with Neil Postman’s The End of Education, which I liked, but I felt like it was a lot to digest in a week, over message boards for my introduction into education classes… along with that we read the Heritage foundation’s Parents’ guide to educational reform (http://site.heritage.org/research/ed...Reform-web.pdf) and the No Child Left Behind Toolkit (http://www2.ed.gov/teachers/nclbguid...rs-toolkit.pdf).

Then we read Donaldo Macedo’s Literacies of Power: What American Are not allowed to Know. That was hard to get through…we spent an entire week reading the forwards where all of his friends sucked his dick for 30 pages…the book itself was interesting, but this guy is angry at some teacher in the past and it shows. I would say his book was really interesting, but not at all enjoyable.

The last 2 weeks we have been reading D.B. Tyack, seeking common ground….each week we have to post our 500+ word reactions to 2 of the 15 questions the professor posts, and then post AT LEAST one ~100 word response to each of the other 10 group members’ responses…it’s killing me.

Next we are reading J. Kozol, Shame of the Nation: the restoration of apartheid schooling in America and after that we read K. Olson, Wounded by School: Recapturing the joy in learning and standing up to old school culture.

This teacher doesn’t answer emails and has never commented on any of our posts…it is super frustrating. They did just bring on another professor to help her, who has been answering questions we had, but we are 6 weeks in at this point.

Like, it's 2am, you've been drinking a bit, and you really haven't played a video game in a while...yawmush already took BF3 to his room, cruz is making his move on Starhawk, and Slider has been all over both Warhawk and BF2 and it looks like they are down for a threesome...and there you are thinking, looks like I'm playing Gameboy tonight...then you see MW3 sitting there and no one's playing. I know what you're thinking, "man, I have dogged that thing to my friends, but no one has to know...I just play it a little and then fall asleep." But trust me, people always find out. When cruz coomes into your room the next morning, you tey to convince him that you were just looking at the manual and never played the game at all, but we will all know better. Yep, we will know better...
