I enjoy defense quite a bit too on CTF. Hunkering down in a tank in Eucadia was probably the most fun I had all night.

The funniest kills I had yesterday were on the first map at Omega Factory - a high blind grenade toss took out chess, and there was one where I think me and another player threw grenades at the same time and they bounced off each other and killed both of us!
I really liked that map...and I am the source of everyone's funniest kills I think.

I also learned that I suck in a jetpack...and I didn't even know you could lock on to a jetpack w/ a missile.

I learn something new every tuesday...usually the hard way.

Yes...that and the whole having to have 8 people in the game issue, which causes restarts and other generally irritating stuff.

I didn't mind your "yapping": Since I was on the other team, I knew you were coming and stood on the hill over the access road waiting for you. I just couldn't get a decent shot off in time. :p
I think I remember that. I was hauling balls in a jeep...and I think it might have been on fire.

Jetpacks. Ugh. In public games I don't even bother trying to use them. There are too many rocket snipers waiting for you to elevate. Pretty much as soon as I take off, I get blow'd up.

That's why I let you and ween have all the jetpack fun last night. I just can't seem to do anything worthwhile. Maybe next time I'll get up some courage.

Lemme see if I can translate:

When I use jetpacks online, I always get sniped by a rocket launcher...so I decided to do it to you guys. ;)

Is there a way to break a missile lock with a jetpack???

IN the 2 days of experience I have had with them the strategy is to fly low so that you can drop quickly when there is someone running around with a missle. Basically you can only be locked on when you have the burners on as it is a heat seeking lock...unfortunately the burners still burn off a little after you let off the gas, so it is not an immediate thing...basically I think you need to have the burners off for a second or so before the lock is broken...so, you can free fall until the lock is broken and kick it back on before you fall to your death...or you fly low and just fall to the ground when you are targetted.

The same trick as in a Warhawk - you can "super-thrust" in one and you have great maneuverability.

So, the big maps are annoying I thought, but I think that is primarily because we dont have enough warhawk fliers to even out the sides on that. You picked up correctly that I was getting very frustrated on the Eucadia map . And chess, you get no sympathy from me on that frozen tundra map when you were getting sniped and binoculared...that was pure karma for all the TOW missiles which is no different then sniping with a MOAB...If only there were a setting to remove those and mines ;)

I like the all talk for the most part right now...I think we are getting close to a point where we would want to have strategy within teams, however I think we need more people with mics though.

Chew- I couldn't tell if you could hear me or not some of the times, but next time we play I can help you get a feel for the strategy and the rules of some of the games(such as zones). It is much easier of course to do that if we can use mics.

Will have to try that. I just assumed that was an evasive feature and would not actually break the lock...that would be much easier.

Ahaha! That reminds me of my favorite kill of the night... supersedes even sniping the warhawk. I used the binoculars on that tundra map once to get chess when he drove the jeep up into that middle building. After he done 'ploded he said, "but there was a roof! Or was there? No there was definitely a roof!"

As ween said, pure TOW missile karma.

I'm not a big fan of small CTF maps, as they don't allow for a flag chase. And I think your frustration on Eucadia had more to do with team distribution than it did with the actual map. I think I had Whistlersteve and Ofermod that game, and they're both pretty solid.

I don't have a beef with the binocs or the TOW, since they both leave you fairly vulnerable, but yeah, I friggin hate mines. I especially hate the dudes online who just spend the whole game mining your vehicles for cheap kills. Our group has been great about not using them though. Mine etiquette FTW!

It isn't too bad being down 2:3, as long as the third man doesn't hang back and binocular you the whole game. You won't catch me piling on when it's lopsided like that. In fact, the Badlands game that you first jumped in, I was just hovering and watching whistlersteve play 1 on 2 because he and I had gotten so far ahead.

Yeah, I don't think we're quite there yet. I accidentally turned all-talk off one week, and I spent the whole night talking to myself.

I'm everybody's favorite kill...

That was odd, because usually, if you get under cover, you're safe from the air strike...but there were two times on that map that I went inside when I heard the beam and still died.

That was just aggravating because I'd planned to go inside in just that event...and then it didn't work!

Other than chess, I don't recognize anyone's voice and I'm concentrating on the game too much to notice the names on the side of the screen. If you were the one who told me to stand near the flag while you were in the tank on the zone map, then I heard you.

And, I would certainly appreciate any strategy tips!

Are you guys able to hear me ok? I have the mic that came with warhawk and it seems like you guys can hear me, but you never know.

You don't sound great, but I can understand you most of the time. If you have another bluetooth headset laying around (ANY headset really), it's probably better. Wired USB is best.

Agree with the wired USB headset. I've had two bluetooth ones, the Warhawk one, and my cell phone one, both sucked. Bought a $20 USB one-ear set that was good. Now I have a $50 stereo set that kicks ass.

I was gunna tell you the trick to the Jetpack is to let off the thrust, but I'm a day late and a dollar short, as someone already beat me to it.

PS3 Audio Device Settings under Accessories:

Level: 3
Input: Headset
Output: Headset (at least one of you has this set to their TV...causes echo)

In-Game Audio Options: (these will save for future games)

Music: 0% (I originally turned it off so I could hear mines)
SFX: 100%
Voice: 100%
Sensitivity: 30% (adjust until ambient effects don't regularly activate {light up} your mic)
Open mic: checked (works well with a good headset)
Stereo: checked (directional effects in Warhawk are amazing, but my rear surrounds activate my mic too much)

And then maybe we should take a map just to concentrate on checking our headsets to make sure everyone can hear everyone else!
We can always do this in the first lobby DM, but a lot of folks show up later.

You're very hard to understand. I know the Eye makes a decent mic, but I bet you're the one that I get the echo from as it picks up the game sounds and my voice as well. Maybe you could move it closer for Warhawk night?

I've had the expansion packs for over a year, and I've never driven the troop carrier or flown the big transport that came with the industrial map. I'll have to do a midsize CTF on the glacier just to try it out (finally).

I would vote no on the transports for our small groups. That think is a flying tank and would be impossible to take down with just 4 people all the while worrying about the other people on the opposing team. The balance on that is totally messed up unless you have a good portion of warhawks in the air...and then the fact that you can pick up vehicles that have the flag in it and carry it across the map makes for no fun.

chess 05-20-09 02:01 PM

Re: Weekly Tuesday Warhawk night

No kidding, I've never used either one, but your reasoning seems sound. Will a TOW take it down? Missile turret?

ween 05-20-09 02:17 PM

Re: Weekly Tuesday Warhawk night

I think the ground transport would be ok with our size because it is generally vulnerable...however it also requires a warhawk in the air to keep up with it really as it can out run a tank and a single manned jeep. The main difference between that and the air transport is the ground transport only has ramming capability while the air transport can rain down massive amounts of ammo on the ground and take out most any ground attack.

ween 05-20-09 02:23 PM

Re: Weekly Tuesday Warhawk night

I dont know what AIR weapons will take it down...I just know that the combination of speed and weapon effectiveness favors a warhawk in taking down the transport whereas ground vehicles dont have much of a chance unless there are a lot of them. Also, if you are a single warhawk trying to take it down while another warhawk is helping to defend it could prove difficult. Basically I could easily see a case where you would escort the air transport with your warhawk and then it would be difficult for anyone to take it down.

I played in a game recently where the other team was full of warhawk fliers and my team wasn't and they just had all of the transports in the air annihilating all our ground forces and they just walked the flag back to their base over and over. It would be nice if they would balance the effectiveness of ground vehicles against air vehicles. You need both to win games, but they clearly favor the air vehicles...just look at the number of weapon options that are given to warhawks compared to ground vehicles. bleh

To join the discussion, I had my tooth going but only hear chess. I have my voice setting a level low so that I sound 'slower' as I tend to talk fast. So I can only hear Chess good and everyone else was mostly noise.

I had a blast till it got to the expansion packs. Than I was booted. All good as I had UNCHARTED to play!!! And yea chess, I am VERY cheap when it comes to buying anything

Same rules for air mines, but nice try. The deal with mines, and maybe others will disagree here, is that there's always some dude spamming them online...putting them near spawn points...putting them on vehicles...just ruining the game in general.

Bottom line: Not a chance, but I will try to refrain from using the TOW from halfway across the map*

Hold on a second there.

1> It is not always one shot, it depends on where you hit the warhawk. There have been numerous times where I get a wing shot and it takes 3 of those to take down a warhawk
2> Those are hard earned, generally precise(lucky) shots unless the warhawk pilot is just hovering there steering a TOW. Now, unlike:
a> The Lightning blast which requires no aim and takes out a square block
b> The TOW...which is like driving a kamikaze warhawk
c> The cluster bomb, much like the lightning gun

Nevermind the speed of a warhawk and the fact that it has access to the entire map and even more annoying on the hero levels where you can just fly off to Timbuktu and avoid all ground combat entirely. Excuse me while I feel no pity for you always being visible on the map

Any time I get hit by a tank, I die...or at least it seems that way.

2> Those are hard earned, generally precise(lucky) shots unless the warhawk pilot is just hovering there steering a TOW. Now, unlike:
a> The Lightning blast which requires no aim and takes out a square block
The lighting blast does have to be aimed you know, and it really doesn't do that much damage unless you hit somebody directly or can get it attached to a vehicle, and the damage amount is based on proximity (ie accuracy). To land a lightning blast, I have to 1) charge it for 5-7 seconds, 2) switch from flight to hover mode, 3) aim it while avoiding fire, 4) release and 5) go back to flight mode. I won't bore you with how many button presses or how much accuracy that takes, but it's more significant than you think, and more often than not, you take me out between somewhere between step 3 and step 5.

b> The TOW...which is like driving a kamikaze warhawk
I can't defend the TOW, except to say that it's about the only way I can get to a missile turret or hit enemies hiding in buildings. It's also especially effective when you fly it up the tailpipe of a tank. :p

c> The cluster bomb, much like the lightning gun
The cluster bomb is damn hard to hit anybody with. I miss more often than I hit with it, and I have to get dangerously close to release it.

I think you might have some misconceptions about the Warhawk, and I also think that if it were as great as you say, you'd spend more time in the air. Truth is...it's scary up there.

A typical encounter goes like this: jet into an area to unload on somebody, dodge tank fire (any one of which will kill me), avoid sniper fire, pray nobody's in a missile turret, why's my life going down?, 50 cal on that jeep...crap...somebody's locked on with a missile...flight mode...turbo...missile dodge...where the f' was that health...crap...another missile lock...dodge...is my team going after the flag?...why didn't I just master the tank?...spawn.

Nevermind the speed of a warhawk and the fact that it has access to the entire map and even more annoying on the hero levels where you can just fly off to Timbuktu and avoid all ground combat entirely. Excuse me while I feel no pity for you always being visible on the map
I didn't even know I could be the hero in a plane till last night when my Warhawk lit up. Will make sure to do Hero mode in Warhawk free maps.

It is nice to be able to jet off and recharge my health, but it only takes one of you getting the controls down to change the whole equation.
