Nintendo DSi Announced and Dated - April 5th - in Black and Blue - $169.99
The latest incarnation of the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo DSi, will be released in the U.S. on April 5 and priced at US$169.99. It is launching in black and new color blue.
The DSi, which has been on sale in Japan since November 2008, has only been available in black and white. The DSi features two 0.3 megapixel cameras, larger screens, a new SD card slot and better speakers. It does not have a Game Boy Advance cartridge slot like the DS or DS Lite.
"Ever since the arrival of the first Game Boy, consumers worldwide have turned to Nintendo for their portable gaming," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Nintendo DSi builds on Nintendo's commitment to bringing fun and creative entertainment to everyone, and will allow consumers to personalize and share their very own experiences."
The Nintendo DSiWare application will able be available in the U.S. and offers software that can be downloaded using Nintendo DSi Points directly to the portable system much like the Nintendo Wii's WiiWare. DSiWare software starts at 200 points.
Along with the DSi, Nintendo is also releasing popular DS rhythm game Rhythm Heaven on April 5. The game has sold over 1.6 million copies since going on sale in Japan last July.

I'm only crying at the demise of the GBA/Expansion slot....not only would my GBA games be useless, but so will any peripheral that uses the slot....like my Guitar Hero (which I also have) attachment.

I entertained the thought of buying a DSi for about 10 minutes, but then realized that the additional features (camera, multimedia) weren't of that much value to me. Plus, the loss of the GBA slot bothers me a bit, as I would still like to be able to use my Japanese DS rumble pak.

$170!? Fuck that shit!
Ahem...
My biggest concern is the loss of the GBA port. I assume DSiWare will step in here with GB/C/A downloads and that's a welcome addition. I do wish Nintendo had worked out Wii<->DSi transfers. I see no reason why NES/SMS/SNES/GEN/T-16/C64 games they have on the Wii's VC couldn't work on this device. Conversely, anything you can play on from DSiWare (with the exception of DS titles, if they exist) could be played on the Wii on your home screen.
Are the cameras used for gameplay? I don't need another portable, digital camera.

I wouldn't rule out VC -> DSi transfers, I think it's got to be something they're thinking about, especially since the PSP already does that. I would actually start buying games I already own on cartridge for that feature (portable Super Metroid = WIN).

Yeah, I don't get that either.. mostly because of the attachments, but I grabbed a GameBoy Micro last year for cheap and haven't used my DS Lite for GBA games since then and I don't have any expansions carts since the ex took Metroid Pinball with here (which came with the rumble pack).

Yeah, thought about it but then I remembered that I have an iphone, so I already have a camera and internet.

Not here to bitch about the price, but about the lack of being able to play GBA games on it - oh wait, those will probably be available for download at a snail's pace and for a price.... I guess I am here to bitch about money in one way.

My DS warranty runs out in April after three years. I'll buy a DSi when the little bugger craps out.

Other notes:
Better Sound Processor.
Doubled CPU Speed, Quadrupled RAM.
^ Obviously these will be for solely for Apps, DSiWare and DSi specific games.
Plus it has better/louder speakers and WPA Support.

I like the WPA support* and the better screens. I never bothered getting a DS Lite, so I'll at least consider getting one of these.
*This is horrible, but, um, somebody I know hacked their next-door neighbor's WEP network exclusively for DS usage because they didn't want to use so little security on their own wireless network.

The only new feature I care about is DSiWare, and sorry, Pixy, but that's not worth $170 for me when I have a perfectly working DS Lite.
I will hope to get one as a birthday or Christmas gift, otherwise I'll upgrade when my Lite craps out.

That's my main concern. The DSi should be able to emulate most of the games on the Wii VC right now. With a proper flashcart the DS can play NES, SNES, SMS, Genesis, TG16, Game Gear, Gameboy, Game Boy Color and some older systems. No reason why the DSi can't do this. Nintendo really needs to enable this feature.

I suppose they could easily use the SD feature for this. Move (not copy - like your 360 profile) the ROMs from your Wii onto your SD card and use that.
However, now that I type that out loud, nothing would stop you from redownloading it to the Wii from the Wii Shop and force the copy on the SD card to become invalid.

So they'd have to link systems and not profiles. Otherwise you couldn't enjoy the Wii VC titles on the go w/o online connectivity to verify you're the only you.
I will patiently (it is Nintendo, after all) wait for more concrete info on this. But this has been out in Japan for months now. Is there anything implemented there?
