Now someone tell my what Orb is and why it might be more useful than TVersity or PlayOn.

I assume it is a media streaming thing.

And then just to top things off, maybe google how i can add moderators to my ignore list? :P

Yep,it is a plain old free media streaming program. I found it to hog less memory than TVersity.

I did just recently start using the media streaming features of the 360 and was impressed by how simple and seamless it is. Both that and the PS3 seem to have great capabilities in that regard.

If you haven't given PlayOn a trial yet you ought to. I love it for watching TV shows from Hulu.

With Hulu and the local library, it's very easy to drop cable. Luckily I'm not into sports and I weaned myself out of watching court shows. So we're migrating first from satellite to basic cable and now from basic cable to Hulu/library DVDs. Still iffy on the Netflix.

I understand. I paid the 30$ for PlayOn based upon the decent Hulu streaming, Netflix streaming (before Netflix came to Live normally), and their intention to add streaming from some other websites that have TV shows. I was in the midst of catching up on CSI when my trial expired so i considered it a CSI + bonus charge.

You know, I'm buzzing from a party, and reading this thread backwards and encountering this is not helping.

Is Orb only good for transmitting your videos and content that's already on your hard drive? If so, that's not what I'm looking for. I'd like a free thing that lets me broadcast Hulu to my 360, since they've apparently taken care of Playon (is that fixed yet?)

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

Hey, folks. I've been thinking about getting a 360 for a while now, but have been waiting for another price drop - but who knows when that'll be? (I'd heard June, but it seems a lot of people laughed off and doubted the analyst who predicted it.)

Anyway, this morning a co-worker told me that she wanted to get the new Nintendo DS and, to get some cash for that, offered to sell me her Xbox for $130.

She also works part time at Gamestop (heh heh, I know what y'all think of that place, but don't hold it against her) and she got this Xbox 360 there used/refurbished. Given the failure rate of this system when they're new, that's the factor that makes me a bit skittish of the deal.

Some newbie questions:

1) Is there a way to tell if Microsoft's 3 year warranty is good for this particular unit and, if so, how much time is left on it? Is it transferable?

2) When it comes to personalizing this unit for me (in regards to Live, etc.), is there any problem in setting that up since it's a used unit?

3) I'd read elsewhere that the Arcade editions can't play first generation Xbox games, which is something I'd like to be able to do as I missed out on a lot, being a PS2-only guy for so long. She claims that all the used units that Gamestop sells are the same - would I be able to play old Xbox games, then?

4) Is there a way to tell which hardware this unit has, i.e. Falcon, Jasper, etc.?

5) This is more of a general question, but on average how large are DLC files (specifically, for Rock Band and GH)? She's throwing in a 20 gb memory card and I'm wondering if I'd need more. I can see my self downloading a lot of songs for those music games, but maybe not much else.

Any other things I should ask her about?

Oh, yeah - she's throwing in her copy of "Left 4 Dead," but that's not sweetening the deal too much for me because, while I lurve all things zombie, I'm a wuss and first person shooters tend to make me ill.

I do need to ask her if it has HDMI inputs, as that is a dealbreaker for me. She just uses component cables, which she's also throwing in.

On one hand, this is a pretty cheap way for me to get an Xbox, but I'm afraid it may be a subpar model and/or crap out on me. Anyway, I'd appreciate your input as to whether I should leap on this. Thanks!

A couple of deals over at Best Buy for Reward Zone members.

Mercenaries 2 - $9.99
Rock Band 2 - $39.99

This is good from 2/22-2/28. Just have them scan your RZ card it should automatically take the $20 off to get down to the above price.

I tried the Afro Samurai demo and it doesn't look that bad. I like the graphics, the gameplay is fine with some cool effects, camera is not that distracting. I guess it may end up being repetitive so it shouldn't be bad at $30. This is from someone that doesn't know anything about the comic.

1) -- check the mfr date on the back
2) -- no problem
3) -- if it has a hard drive, it will play xbox games
4) -- check mfr date, if newer than 10/07 likely Falcon (will have HDMI as well) almost no chance of it being Jasper
5) -- She is throwing in 20 GB HARD DRIVE...it will have 13 GB space, as long as you don't install games to the hard drive, you will be fine. You will probably want to upgrade to 60 or 120 gb eventually. Most arcade games are under 250 mb (most under 50 mb)...figure 25-30 mb per song on Rock Band. Demos are ~ 1GB, some DLC can be up to 1GB (Burnout Paradise is 800+mb)

Left 4 Dead can be sold for $30 - $45 on craigslist/ebay

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

DJLinus - Dell.com has had 360's on sale quite often over the last few months, and just a week ago had the Pro system (w/3 games and a 60gb hard drive) for about $220 shipped. I would personally do something like that before buying a used one with 20gb hard drive for $130. Sounds like from Dell a lot of people get the newest models, they'll all be HDMI, and you get a full warranty.

Trevor 02-23-09 02:59 PM

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

I'm sure that has been covered in one of the many 360 threads, but a quick search doesn't find it.

I'm finally opening up my 120 gig HD and am preparing to transfer the data from my old 20 gig on to it.

The transfer software message screens state that the old 20 gig will be formatted and empty after the transfer. Is there a way to stop this and save it as a backup?

The screens also state that the new drive will be formatted first, losing all the videos, demos, and games pre-loaded on the 120 gig. Is that true?

Seems stupid that there is no way to save all my data.

Michael Corvin 02-23-09 03:08 PM

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

What you read is correct and I don't think there is a way around it.

The way it works:
120GB -> formatted
20GB -> transferred to 120GB
20GB -> formatted

You can still use the 20GB, but it gets formatted back to factory default.

Trevor 02-23-09 03:34 PM

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

I guess one could try turning the system off after step 2....

I won't, going to start the transfer now. It just would have been nice to have a fully set up back-up waiting to pop in if the new drive ever fails or fills-up.

And it seems silly to give me all those demos, videos, and even full games (Hexic, maybe another?) on the new HD and have me lose them as I install the thing.

Other than burning to a DVD and playing that, of course :D

pinata242 02-23-09 03:37 PM

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

You don't get the benefit of knowing when step 2 ends and step 3 begins.

Even if you did, there's no way you could be quick enough to get it before the 20gb format started.

Jeremy517 02-23-09 03:39 PM

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

One end of the the transfer cable has a USB plug. You can hook it up to your favorite Windows machine and use a homebrew app to save off the data first. Of course, youd have to not sell the cable afterward in order to be able to restore later.

I thought about that, but decided it wasn't worth the effort. I have some OCD/hoarding issues, and hate giving up "free" content on the new drive, but decided to just ignore it and move on.

I even have a 3rd party device for backing up the 360 hard drives that I bought a couple years ago, but can't find the cable/port for it right now.

Demos and videos are probably free on the marketplace anyway, just jot down what they are and re-download them after the transfer. That leaves Hexic. If it does get erased, I've read you can call and get a code to re-download it.
