Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
I was debating what game to pull from the pile yesterday and was tossing up Assassin's Creed, Overlord and Metroid Prime: Corruption. I ended up with AC. Overlord remains relegated to the pile. |
Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
I haven't tried it yet, but I would stay away from the Overlord II demo then. I imagine the engine is upgraded in several ways and going back to the original might hurt your impressions.
Overlord had a bit of a curve to get into it, as I recall. But it was well worth it once you got used to the gameplay. |
Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
That's what I was thinking pinata.
Speaking of Assassin's Creed, I put in 3-4 hours and so far it's very 'meh. I want to love it, but it's so damn boring. All the elements and actions you do should be fun but they aren't. I love the climbing in Crackdown and Prince of Persia, but here it's so slow, dull and not very fluid. Same for running and jumping from rooftops. Looks great, but not very fun. Also I know it's been done to death but pick-pocketing and eaves-dropping were boring as hell the first time and they want me to do this how many times? The concept of both works on paper, it's a solid way for the character to gain info on the enemy, but concept in action is dull as shit. Oh and I love how you start off with all your powers only to lose them 20 minutes in. Genius! I wish more games did this. Also, did all the voice actors except for one quit the industry? Here the main protagonist is also Nathan Drake (Uncharted) and the Prince (PoP). He's a great voice actor but he doesn't change up his accent, tone, inflection or anything. It's like Nathan Drake jumped out of Uncharted into a couple of Ubisoft franchises. It's obvious he's going to have a long career in the industry, so he needs to expand his range a bit so that I'm not visualizing a different character than what's on screen when I hear his voice. |
Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
^^ You and I have the same opinions of AC. I really wanted to like it based on the hype, but 1/2 way thru I just had to stop playing. Wash, rinse, repeat. Maybe AC 2 will be better but I have no desire to finish up AC at all.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
Wait till you get to the end Corvin and realize you have to do those same missions over and over again for every assassination... with nothing new thrown into the mix.

I was the opposite, I really enjoyed playing through AC. I think I finished with about 900 of 1000 ach.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
Gave the Overlord II demo a spin. It's much looser than the original. The minions move way faster and I couldn't understand when the RS changed from camera control to minion-sweeping control. May have been just the demo portion since there were points when you couldn't sweep them.
But god damn if there isn't a mini-map with objective markers on it! That is the most necessary upgrade. Of course, clubbing baby seals and riding wolves is pretty bad ass too. It looks stranger than the first, if you can imagine. I can't wait to play the full game. |

AC is in my un-played stack but I'm really starting to hate this "Lose your abilities or You have to learn your abilities" in games. I mean if it's some special ability then fine; but in general it sucks. Especially when it's a character known for their abilities like Superman or Wolverine. In games featuring character like Superman and Wolverine we always have to "learn" their common well known abilities. We already know what they can do so why strip them, then force the player to "learn" them as if they never had it?

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
Progression is nice, it's the giant fucking cock tease that is annoying. Another good example is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. They let you play as bad-ass Vader, right off the bat, before introducing you to the pussy you really get to play.

I don't mind some progression, as a game with ten levels with the same abilities the whole time would be rather boring. Although some games pull it off (I don't remember progression in the Splinter Cell games, but maybe I'm wrong). An action-oriented game usually needs progression though, whether it's abilities, weapons, or something. However, I agree that with some common characters, having your standard abilities, or at least a few of them, should be default. If stripping Superman to nothing is the only way a developer can make the game, they need to try again or give up. |

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
The actual story of AC was kinda meh, but yeah, I really like but the other part, the graphics, the great views, the era, etc.
Also, there's a link in the AC thread about ways to enhace the game if you find it too easy/repetitive, it's a totally different game if you follow that instructions. It's basically removing the GPS and a lot of the help. |

Ars Technica gets a little preview of Games on Demand: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2...er-ratings.ars
Meeting with Microsoft's Scott Austin to talk about Xbox Live, there was little expectation of sexy reveals or big news, and what we saw during the briefing wasn't flashy in any way. But there was still some really good news for Xbox 360 owners: Microsoft is getting set to update Xbox Live in a number of ways to make it easier to find and buy content. The big news is that games will be priced in your local currency, and you'll be able to buy with a credit card, bypassing the point system altogether. That's not all. "We're going to have 30 or more games launching in August, worldwide, in all markets. We'll also be adding new content in all of our markets weekly," Austin explained. This is the Games on Demand service that was announced after the Microsoft press conference: you'll now be able to buy full-sized, big-name titles directly from Xbox Live and download them to your console. Austin walked us through the process of buying a game through the service. "What you'll see here for the first time on the buy screen is we'll be showing the price in the local currency," he said, and there was something akin to a gasp in the room. "And we're going to allow people to purchase with a credit card." He points out that gamers will still have the choice to pay with Microsoft points, if they want. The ability to see the real price of the game, and then to be able to pay directly with your credit card instead of buying a block of points is a huge step forward. http://static.arstechnica.com/Gaming/xboxlivemoney.jpg The licensing model for the Games on Demand purchases will also mirror that of Arcade games. "We keep the license information on the Live servers, so the user who purchased it can roam to another console and play the game there." This also allows gamers to delete the entire game to free up hard drive space, and then redownload whenever they'd like. We're told to expect pricing on the games to be comparable to what you would see at retail. When asked about day and date releases with new games, there is no information. "We haven't determined that," Austin said. That's not a "no," so there is a possibility that new games will be released both as a physical and digital product. All this content has the potential to make finding quality games and add-ons more difficult. Don't worry, Microsoft has you covered. "One thing that customers have been asking for is more information about games," Austin said. The New Xbox Experience offered expanded game pages, and that was nice, but moving forward you'll get even more data, directly from the community. "Especially for community games or game add-ons that don't get a lot of coverage or reviews," says Austin. "So we're introducing user ratings." All content in the marketplace this summer will be able to be rated, with an easy-to-use five-star scheme. If you find a little-known game you love, rate it. If you think a piece of content sucks, give it a single star. You'll also be able to organize data by these rankings, so you can look at Xbox Live Arcade games or game add-ons that are five-star rated, weeding out lower-quality releases. This should make browsing through content much easier. http://static.arstechnica.com/Gaming/avatarwarthog.jpg We were also shown a new marketplace for avatar clothing, so if you'd like to buy a Halo- or Splinter Cell-themed shirt for your avatar, you will be able to do so. If you want to give your avatar an RC mini-Warthog, it will cost you 320 Microsoft points, or $4. Games will also soon have the ability to give you awards, so your avatar can gain items by playing games. That's right: you'll soon have awards to deal with on top of achievements. Microsoft has many ways of making you feel like you're earning things while playing the games. The Avatar Marketplace notwithstanding, these additions and updates will go a long way to strengthen Xbox Live as a digital distribution platform. The ability to buy full games without having to muck about with a point system simplifies things drastically. Being able to rate content and games will give the community feedback about what's worth buying, as well as show publishers what works and what doesn't. The ability to redownload purchased games or download them to a friend's console is also user-friendly. Microsoft wants your Xbox to be the best way of buying games, and these moves go a long way toward making that a reality. |
Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest
Getting avatar clothing and stuff awarded for doing things in-game is super awesome. I was already a big fan of the highly underrated ability for some games to award you gamerpics for doing things. This would be a really cool extra "prize" that seems a little more tangible and costs the companies next to nothing.

I finally checked out that Natal and it looks interesting but kinda gimmicky. Plus I don't have that much room in my living room. :(
