So what are we supposed to do (re: game layoffs)?

Game sales were up last year, console sales were up last year... yet studios are slashing jobs left and right.

I'm buying games, I buy DLC, I pay for Xbox Live... what else are we supposed to be doing?

The truth is that a lot of companies are playing it safe by being safe rather than sorry. It's either get rid of a few high paid executives, or axe a large group of worker bees, and the executives are the ones who make the ultimate decision on that.

If you really want to do your part, then here's what you do:
  • Only buy new games, because only the seller makes money off used games.
  • Do not trade in or sell your used games, as these steer buyers away from new games.
  • Purchase stock in publicly traded companies that develop video games.
  • When people ask for reviews, never tell them anything negative that might prevent them from buying new games.
  • Only give new video games as birthday gifts. Give birthday gifts to everyone you even marginally know.
  • Buy new video games and donate them to children's charities. Not only will you spread the love of video games (and become popular with sick, poor kids in the process), but you can write this off on your taxes!

Seriously, though, don't sweat it. The video game industry is the biggest grossing of the entertainment world. They know there's money to be had, and they'll keep churning out games.

You can't make a difference...even collectively, WE can't make a difference.

So I would give some serious thought to not worrying about it.

You're welcome.

:D

Don't worry, I don't think any big game will be delayed because of this. How many programmers/developers are they laying off? I think most of the layoffs are in PR, Marketing and those kind of areas. There may be some layoffs in devs but that may be because they are not in a project right now.
