XBox 360 HD upgrade

Has anyone here done an XBox 360 hard drive upgrade? I bought a 120GB drive but the instructions online to upgrade the console suck hard. Lot of holes and unanswered questions. So I need some help with this.

Yeah I know it voids my warranty. The console is old and out of warranty to begin with.

Do you mean unsnapping the 20 GB drive and snapping on a 120? That won't void a warranty.

What specifically are you having trouble with? You did buy an official MS 360 HDD and not just some 2.5" SATA expecting to physically replace the 20gb in the shell, right?

Sounds like he bought a SATA and wants to install that to it, not an official xbox drive.

I just bought a compatible 120 GB SATA drive for $45. I'll let you know next week whether the instructions the instructions work.

Please do, I'd be interested in the results.

I'd be interested in hearing the results as well. I was just looking into doing this, but haven't decided yet. I wish there was a way to use a faster drive, though. I'd love to be able to use a 7200 RPM drive, especially now that we can run games off the drive.

Why not just spend another $45 on a real drive from Ebay and get the cable from MS for free? Is it really worth the trouble to try and build your own and void the warrenty?

Only a certain model Western Digital 5400 rpm will work with the mods. Cannot go over 120 gb also. This is for people like me who don't want to pay the inflated price to Microsoft.

It is a matter of principle. Plus, I am broke. :beer2:

Not too fun to get banned from Xbox Live for doing something the wrong way.

Yeah but that's for pirates, this is just a minor hdd mod.

I have successfully done the mod to upgrade the hard drive to 120 GB (knocking on wood). I followed the instructions on PC World. I decided not to go through the instructions on xbox scene as I didn't have a lot installed on the 20 GB drive. I just moved my profile and game saves onto a memory card first before swapping the old drive out. The process took me about 20 min.

Can you play xbox original games? Like Fable and Halo 2?

Then you should be fine. But apparently on these modded hard drives, unless you specifically copy over "Partition 2," you can't play any original Xbox games (whether via disc or download.)
