Precursor to Xbox 360 dying?

Getting 3 red rings of death. Oddly, though, it only does it every other time I turn on the machine. One time machine works fine, other time it doesn't. Should I just get the coffin anyway? I'm assuming this thing is going to die any day.

I had a few freezes and three "temporary" RROD before I got the final RROD that killed my 360. I would get the coffin.

Fuck me. I'll need to call service because online it says that my machine is "out of warranty." Arrrrrg.

So now the question is, if i go buy an arcade machine (I have about half covered with gift certs at BB), how much of a bitch is it to get everything transferred over to new machine?

This, along with disc read errors, is exactly what happened to my 360 before it bit the dust for good... it lasted probably 2 weeks like that and then was toast...not sure about the transfer, but if you have the special wire or whatever it shouldn't be too hard, or you can recover your gamertag and then go to your download history and redownload all your shit.

That probably refers to the general warranty. The RROD warranty is three years so even if you have a launch system, three years won't be up until the 17th of this month.

As simple as unplugging the hard drive of the old system and plugging it in the new one. Now if you want to do the DRM transfer, that will take a little longer.

So are the elites better in terms of this problem? that's what i heard. Also, are the elites from a year or so ago any worse compared to the ones out now? I ask because I want to get the elite bundle which has forza 2 and marvel ultimate alliance instead of the current one which has kung fu panda and lego indiana jones

The new elites are going to be better than the old elites, but the old elites are probably good enough. Make sure you keep your receipt for the 3-year warranty from purchase date as going by manf date will lose you 12-18 months already.

Even launch units aren't out of the three-year RROD warranty. You can still get it repaired if it is RRODing.

I read the thread title and was thinking, why doesn't he just say his Xbox is dying? Then I realized you actually were talking about a 360.

Just call and tell them you got the three red rings. You ship it back and more than likely they just ship a refurb back to you that same day without even looking at your system.

funny thing is i hooked it up this morning and it's working fine. obviously it's not worked properly since i'm getting error messages, but i can seem to play stuff now. definitely going out shopping today to pick up a new system. rather have a new one that has less chance of screwing me over than a refurb.

well, i bit the bullet and went and bought an arcade machine today. had about half of it paid for with credit from BB. i'm keeping my 20 GB HD and using it on the new machine. going to sell the refurb and memory card on craigslist and recoup the cost for what i paid on this new one. basically it's a wash on what i paid, but i get a newer console and one with HDMI. figured it was a good deal.

On topic here, my disc drive in the 360 makes some pretty strange noises. Hard to explain but when going from game to Dashboard it makes a harsh "nails on chalkboard" sound. Sometimes the game will go black when the disc is being read, but it never freezes, an FMV scene may just be delayed like it's loading. It's never done this before so I'm a little worried about it.

I've got two more symptoms...one, the system occasionally says "unreadable disc", even when it's not. It happened steady for a day and a half, then went away and has been fine.
The other is where my green light doesn't turn red, rather, it looks a little yellow or orange. I first noticed this last night after playing Fallout for a couple hours.
Has anyone had either of those symptoms? So far it still works and everything's playable....

only good thing is when you call and have them send a box to get it repaired, its fairly quick.
