If I was in charge of the world, I would have done a "Greatest Hits" package of the bonus songs from GH 1 and 2. Among others, I would love to play Even Rats again.

That said, I really hope each of the 20 can be individually deleted. If not, I am not going to download it. Aside from the RB 2 songs I can't delete, I really like having my game being crap-free and a majority of the 20 songs are pretty weak.

PS3 users cannot delete songs, at least I don't think we can.

Unfortunately everything I am coming up with online points to having to delete your entire RB file - no selective deleting. That blows.

That list of 20 free songs is disapointing. I've never even heard of ANY of those bands. They should of at least included a few known songs. I probably would have downloaded the 20 songs and given it a shot if there were at least a few known songs in the pack.

I have no intention of d/l those songs. I've never heard of them so why waste the hard drive space?

I don't understand why some of you guys seem to be afraid to try some new music you have never heard before. Isn't that part of the fun of liking music? I always enjoy finding a new band that I wind up liking a lot.

It just seems downright retarded to not even try these songs, especially since they are free. It is new gameplay! Plus, it isn't like you can't delete the songs if you don't like them.

You guys are weird.

"Known" bands is completely subjective. Just because a band doesn't get radio play doesn't mean they're not a known band, or more importantly, a good band.

Bands I have never heard of before encountering them in Rock Band (not counting Harmonix Bonus Bands):
Spoiler:

Against Me!
Airborne
Angels & Airwaves
The Buzzcocks
The Cab
Evile
Harvey Danger
Hot Hot Heat
Jet
Juli
Les Wampas
Locksley
Lush
The Material
The Myriad
The New Pornographers
Norman Greenbaum
The Outlaws
OK Go
Paramore
Plain White T's
The Runaways
Scars on Broadway
Shinedown
Silversun Pickups
Sixx:A.M.
Sleater-Kinney
The Sounds
The Squeeze
Them Terribles
thenewno2

These are all the bands I was unfamiliar with (by name) before encountering them in game. I may have heard a song in a movie or something, but not known the artist. There are numerous other bands (like Coheed) that I had known about, but had never listened to before Rock Band.

People's musical tastes are just as varied as every other person out there, and I can almost guarantee that almost everybody should be able to pick out at least one of the free twenty as something that they would enjoy to listen to, and/or play. It does suck that probably won't be marked as individuals on the HDD (360 only), but that remains to be seen. chuckd21 put it pretty well. It's amazing that people will still bitch about "free" stuff (objective free, we kind of paid for it with the purchase of RB2).

Found this on ScoreHero (from PUSA newsletter):

ROCKBAND II GAMEPACK

That's right! 3 new PUSA tunes are coming out for Rockband II on NOVEMBER 4TH, ELECTION DAY. Ladybug, Dune Buggy, and Feather Pluck'n.....again, these will be available through Xbox Live. This is of course in addition to 'Lump', which is included in the actual ROCKBAND II game. We are sooo bigtime. Remember, that'll be NOVEMBER 4TH, which also happens to be ELECTION DAY.

I'm with you. I don't see how new songs (free ones at that) are any different than new levels of Little Big Planet or Super Mario Bros. I can understand not wanting to pay for tracks you don't know and take the chance that they suck... but these are FREE.

Hey everyone!
We're happy to finally announce something that we've had to sit on for months...

Shaimus is in Rock Band 2!

"Like a Fool" will be available as one of 20 free downloads for anyone who buys the game. Additionally, "All Of This" and another new song, "Tie You Down," will eventually be part of the Rock Band library as paid downloads.

We're very excited to be back in a Harmonix game, and we hope these songs will be very fun to play...
I'd totally be down for "All of This", and probably the other as well after I gave it a listen or two.

Damn.. More incoming news!

Someone on ScoreHero checked the spa.bin file from the Nirvana pack and found Metallica - King Nothing in there. Looks like we're not through with Metallica just yet.

i have never listened to PotUSA outside of Lump and whatever the other radio hit was in the 90s (Peaches?). Does all their stuff generally sound like those songs?

I also really hope we get some They Might Be Giants this spring. Maybe around April 1st get some TMBG and a couple other humorous songs.

Another bit about these tunes, I think Harmonix brought on the backlash themselves talking up these songs for weeks and keeping it shrouded in secrecy like there was going to be a big surprise or two in there. Then there is this little tidbit from IGN(quote found by PenguinoMF on CAG):
Harmonix actually wanted to toss in 100 tracks total for the disk, but couldn't get them all in one time to ship for Xbox 360 by September. So this fall, MTV is releasing an additional 20 downloadable master tracks... for free. By year's end this will mean RB fans will have access to more than 500 songs.
It's pretty ambiguous but by the wording (which, by all accounts, could be IGN's fault) sounds like they would be legit tunes, not promotional ones.

Surely you've heard this song. It was played quite a bit a few years back.

So that's what I was thinking, modern one hit wonders that actually made a blip on the charts at some point. A few other examples that would fall into that category:

Earshot - Get Away

Dust for Life - Step into the Light

Nonpoint - What a Day
Spoiler:

Spiderbait - Black Betty

So it's all about expectations. If Harmonix would have listed the 20 songs on the site where you register your code, there wouldn't have been an ounce of backlash. Instead you have this month long (or more) buildup where people are excited about it, discussing it and the inevitable letdown.

I'll give 'em all a listen today, but with every other pack you can't delete individual songs, so it's looking doubtful that these will be added to my collection. I can't imagine what the thread on RockBand.com is like right now.

Next to Hero of the Day, King Nothing is probably the worst song in their entire catalog. Oh yes, I'd put anything on St. Anger over those two songs.

Although if you couple that with the Fuel (rumor?) from a while back, looks like there could be a Load/ReLoad pack on the way, for better or worse.

Because they show up in mystery set lists, that's why. If there was the enable/disable track function that was discussed for RB2 then there would be zero complaints. Download the pack, play 'em once and disable the ones you don't want to show up in random sets. As it stands it's black and white. Download them and risk them showing up in your sets, or don't download there is no middle-ground solution.

Ahh a retarded tag to boot - so endearing.

Should I accept the next FREE liver and onions dinner I see (no offense to Liver&Onions! )? In my experience free stuff is usually free for a reason.

And on the PS3 you can't delete the tracks as mentioned above. Yes that's on us PS3 owners for going that way, but the fact remains.

That really sucks.

Although i imagine us 360 owners will be in the same situation since i imagine the songs will be up for download as a pack rather than individually.

Nope. Never heard of most of those either. I know Orgy, Cold, and was actually at the video shoot for the Nonpoint track.

You have to understand that I (like a great number of people out there) never listen to the radio at all. With portable devices and 1/8" jacks on most car decks now, we have the freedom to only listen to what we want to listen to.

I find out about new bands through Rock Band, magazines, and Wikipedia. This works out well for me, and has introduced me to hundreds of bands over the years that would never get any radio-play at all (except for maybe the college station late at night).

So it's all about expectations. If Harmonix would have listed the 20 songs on the site where you register your code, there wouldn't have been an ounce of backlash. Instead you have this month long (or more) buildup where people are excited about it, discussing it and the inevitable letdown.
I completely disagree with you here. If they had listed what the 20 free songs were on the registration site, then we just would have had the bitching a few weeks earlier. They stated that these were going to be lesser-known/up and coming bands, and you (and others) took that to mean something completely different than what it was.

Okay, say that can only be deleted all or nothing. Then say you wind up liking 11 of the 20 songs. Is it still not worth the free download?

All I know is any thunder they could have stolen from Activision with this big announcement of 20 free songs was flushed down the toilet.

Next week I will only play GH:WT in honor of this announcement.
