I never notice stuff like draw distance or popups or jaggies in games. Slowdown I would notice, and this game has none of that thankfully.

It reminds me of Just Cause because of the jungle setting, and that's not a good thing since I hated Just Cause. It's real fun to blow things up and stuff, but so far it's decent at best. I'd rate it 6.5-7.0 out of 10.

The first story mission (after the tutorial) is a bit hard, I failed it three times before I popped Tales of Vesperia back in the 360.

stingermck 08-31-08 11:22 PM

The pop ups didn't get any better after some more play. For example we were driving and about to drive between 2 cars, as we are about a foot away, a concrete barrier popped up between the cars. Crash. Even the grass pops up as your walking around.

Lots of pissed off people on the Pandemic boards, with a bug list going around. Lots of freezing on the 360, and PS3, and claims the PS2 version only last 4 hours.

I'm picking this up today. It looks like a lot of fun. After IGN's video/written review, I'm all in.

stingermck 09-01-08 12:15 PM

Spending some more time with it today, its not as bad, once you accept the bugs here and there. Hopefully there is a patch soon though. Ebay average sold price is down to $46 already. Damn.

I like how the game gives away achievement points like candy on Halloween.

Flay 09-01-08 08:55 PM

Good rental, bad purchase. I finished the story in two days.

Very Buggy. Feels more like Just Cause than Mercenaries.

 I thought something felt familiar, especially during the grassy/mountain locations. Just needed a hang glider or something.

nickdawgy 09-02-08 01:24 AM

 I mentioned it felt like Just Cause a few posts before you guys did.

It's growing on me. I'd say it deserves an 7.0-8.0 now as opposed to my earlier 6.5-7.0 rating.

My video store kicks ass...they always have the new games on release day in major abundance, then they sell some off cheap in no time. I grabbed Condemned 2 for $20, Madden for $20, and Lego Indy for $20 all within the last month.

Wow! That's some insane prices for games that new (esp Madden and Lego Indy). What store?

Decker 09-02-08 09:23 AM

It's strange that a game that got delayed at least 6 months (and maybe longer even) would still be that buggy. Still, I wanted to play it with my friend. Maybe I'll pick up a copy off ebay...

FYI, they have the full song free to download at the official site. Linky

I had that song stuck in my head for days too:D

The more I play this, the more I like it. Jacking a chopper with the grapple is awesome.

The same for me. Me and a friend had fun last night just laying waste to some mansions up in the hills. We tried to take down a big building but they wouldn't do the bomb drop in the city. Does anyone know if you can take down one of the tall buildings in the city. This is the fun that I wish I could have had with GTA 4. And the map itself is really huge.

Spicollidriver1 09-04-08 08:53 AM

I downloaded that song and I love it and makes me want this game more.

I ended up giving in and buying it off ebay ($47 shipped, new). I hope I can talk my best friend into getting a copy as well.

Despite the glitches that this game has and some cheap races it is actually really fun. Last night i hard a hard time putting the controller down and going to bed. It is fun just annihilating everything in sight to see what will fall.

Well, I would have posted sooner, but my laptop died last week and I had to get a new one.

That said, looking at some of the reviews, I can definitely see how official reviewers can give games like this one and Too Human very low scores (which if I hadn't already played them) would probably drive me away from buying).

That said, despite the obvious and in some cases irritating bugs or "design flaws" - I've had a LOT of fun with both these games. I'm not sure how Flay could completely finish it in two days though ;p - I've been playing just about every day since last Sunday and I'm still only just finishing up the AN/PRC HVTs prior to starting the actual faction missions.

They fixed some of the issues in the first game, but unfortunately a lot more came out - personally, I'd prefer to blame EA and the PS2 port stuff for that - along with the delays from Nov 07 till now, but either way, I'm having fun with this in spite of everything and I plan on holding onto it anyways.

I agree though, that more of the airstrikes should have been doable with satellites or something else - doesn't make so much sense that so many of them require a beacon or smoke for such a large fuel air bomb or something else. Takes away the fun of standoff capabilities. Still, like the C4 jeep, it is fun to drop an artillery strike beacon on your hood and jump out while watching a line of artillery track across a PRC motorpool.

And the panzercycle is really just badass!

I read the reviews and it sounded like they had royally screwed up this game. I picked it up on release day and it was funny but i got a familiar sensation running through my body. It was the same feeling i had when i played the original Mercenaries. I was not impressed at the start. It felt slow, sluggish and generally poor.....the same as i first felt about Mercs 1. But then another familiar sensation came through me after playing it for a while. Enjoyment. The game is very similar to the 1st in the fact that you don't actually really start enjoying it until you are an hour or two into the game. I have the problem that i am used to fast driving and perfect handling of vehicles like the in the GTA games. Merc does not have this. Its feels more weighted and generally slower. But its just another type of good rather than being a negative. I have been playing the game non-stop since buying it and really love it. The graphics are a tad on the weak side, but what the hell, i am having a blast blowing the crap out of everything. Slowly getting toward the Nuke. I have encountered a few bugs (one which made me laugh out loud was a helicopter my character was sat in slowly disappeared showing Nilson sat down. Once it had completely disappeared he plummeted to the ground....and survived...LOL), but not as many as have been reported. The voices in the game do get annoying and thats one thing that had irked me. The cut scenes could also have been improved. Can anyone confirm if this is a port of the next gen versions or the PS2 version?

To conclude, i would say that this game is certainly worth your time. Just make sure that you don't just play it for an hour and get bored and shut it off. It gets better the more you play.

Well, it came today. I haven't played it yet but I strongly suspect something fishey with this auction. I came shipped directly from EB Games, complete with an EB Games invoice with my name on it. It has a price of $59.99, tax of $5.19, handling of $6.99 and a total price of $72.17. What the hell happened there and who paid for this game? I'm going to check the order number and see...

Who knows...as long as your credit card was only charged $47 I would not worry too much about the invoice. Sounds like the ebay seller possibly drop ships and maybe had the wrong order with identical item shipped to you...with your information etc. Let us know what you think of the game. :)

So I tried out my likely stolen or fraudulently acquired copy of the game. I had lowered expectations of the game already, but was pleasantly surprised by how much fun my friend and I had in the first couple of hours. Yeah it has graphical bugs, but still it's fun to mess around and play with. In my short time, I gotta say I quite liked what I saw so far.

Well..you purchased this thru ebay and from a registered seller on ebay so I guess as long as the game works and you do not see men outside sitting in dark cars with sunglasses.......you should be okay. ;)

I will pick this up eventually but only for about $20.00.

james2025a 09-10-08 07:47 AM

I was playing more of Mercs 2 last night. I decided to look again at the video settings. I thought i had everything maxed out....but not the case. I switched everything to the max and then switched the resolution to the max as well. The game looks a hell of a lot better now. I am actually, impressed with the graphics now. I just bought a new Alienware rig so my computer can handle this now problem. I can imagine people complaining about the graphics if they are playing it on a lower end system. The game just keeps getting better though. It seems to be generally harder than the first game, but i think thats more to do with there simply being more enemies to fight against. And the fact that they can now radio in for reinforcements makes it harder. I am loving this game and just hope they do a third one.
