I don't care what the reviewers say -- I really dug the demo and I'm planning to pick this up.

And I loved Mass Effect too. :p

I'm with ya on this one. I'll be grabbing this one, if anything because it'll be a mindless romp.

And I still haven't cracked open Mass Effect :( I need to finish eternal sonata before I start a new rpg.

Same here. I hated it at first, until I "got it", then I actually enjoyed the demo quite a bit. Definitely looking forward to this one. Oh, and I loved Mass Effect as well.

Flay 08-18-08 06:43 PM

I'd imagine this type of game doesn't lend itself well to the rushed review process. Here's a quip from a more positive review of the game: http://krisabel.ctv.ca/blog/_archive...8/3842669.html

Although the massive battles are fun, they are a lot of work and the way the game dumps its complex systems, exposition-heavy story sequences, and mythological lore on you without any guidance is both wearisome and confusing.

nickdawgy 08-18-08 06:49 PM

I loved Mass Effect as well, but haven't played the Too Human demo yet. Come to think of it, I still have to finish Mass Effect.

I was thinking of picking it up, how does it compare to Mass Effect, both good and bad?

Liver&Onions 08-18-08 06:52 PM

it shouldn't/doesn't compare to mass effect.

Too Human is a Diablo clone basically.

Exactly. The game is NOTHING like Mass Effect except in that it is Sci-Fi.

He said the combat was glitchy and gave examples, he said the loot structure was messed up and gave examples, and he said that the powers didn't do enough and gave examples.

I guess I'm not seeing where he didn't give examples...

maingon 08-18-08 08:28 PM

IGN gave it a 7.8, they also mention the story is the weakest part of the game.

Flay 08-18-08 08:29 PM

3/5 from Giant Bomb: http://www.giantbomb.com/too-human/61-20499/reviews/

Do you like loot? Then Too Human might be for you. If you have an insatiable lust for items with higher stats than the ones you're currently using, or if you get giddy at the mere thought of Diablo-style rare item naming conventions, you'll probably be able to look past the game's issues and have a good time. But even at its best, it's hard to ignore Too Human's monotonous combat and dated approach to cooperative play.

Flay 08-18-08 08:35 PM

5.5 / 10 from Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/acti...an/review.html

Too Human is a game of false starts and unrealized potential that infiltrate almost every aspect of the game, from story, to combat, to balance. Its elements feel stitched together, making for a patchwork quilt of a game that's fraying at the seams.
4/5 from Gamepro: http://www.gamepro.com/microsoft/xbo...s/206650.shtml

It may look like a straightforward action game with an RPG twist, but the truth about the opening chapter of Silicon Knight's planned trilogy is much stranger. Here's an Xbox 360 exclusive that proudly wears its lofty ambitions on its sleeves, and yet sometimes seems bent on self-sabotage.

nickdawgy 08-18-08 09:14 PM

Ok, those reviews sealed it for me. What a disappointment.

PopcornTreeCt 08-18-08 10:26 PM

Those reviews don't surprise me after playing the demo. I would say
Mass Effect >>>>>>> Too Human

CaptStormy 08-19-08 08:47 AM

Personally I am confused how people can compare this to Mass Effect. Closest thing I would imagine comparing this to is Hellgate:London on PC but with more story elements. I myself am looking forward to this title...Poor Camera Angles aside. Take it for what is is a twitch Action RPG which encourages replay by shoving loot to you just like Diablo did.
Kunane954 is my xbox 360 name.

Draven 08-19-08 03:29 PM

God, I have to post this. Dyack is such a dipshit.

There was a demo for Too Human on Xbox Live not so long ago... did you look at the feedback and respond to it? What do you do? How do you address that type of feedback?

You can't. From a standpoint, we can address it in the future with downloadable content and in the sequels. But the feedback from the demo... we pretty much gold and mastered around the same time as the demo came out.

But one of the interesting things... it's funny because you look at it... I think we took for granted how innovative the game was. First of all, the demo got a tremendous amount of attention. We've had over a million downloads, the reception has been by and large extremely positive.

But what we're also seeing is for the people who don't like it, generally just don't get it. And it's because we've created something so innovative and different. It's ironic, it just shows that human nature of if you don't understand something, you immediately attack it. It's pretty interesting in that regard.

Once people understand it, you can almost see it click with them. Once they stop trying to fight the camera. As soon as you hear someone say the controls are really simple or the gameplay is not very deep, that's absolutely not true. Too Human is extremely, deceptively deep. Once that stuff clicks, those are the people that are going round telling ten other friends. I guess the word of mouth for Too Human is really going to carry it to ground now.

That's why we released a demo. We thought that was really our only chance. It was so different of a game but how different became clear with the demo. But the reception has been so positive and the interest has been so high, that we're feeling really good about where the game is trending towards.
Seriously, I have never read more deluded comments from a major game developer in my life.

darkside 08-19-08 04:55 PM

This is why I can't support the game. I thought Too Human looked like a cool idea and I love Diablo type games, but every time Dyack opens his mouth I want to go toss my copy of Eternal Darkness in the garbage. Fuck Dennis and fuck his game that none of us are smart enough to understand the genius of.

Innovative is apparently the new monotonous.

flashburn 08-19-08 05:47 PM

Yeah, he does seem like a bit of a douche bag. I'll still be renting the game though.

PopcornTreeCt 08-19-08 06:03 PM

Wow, that's the worst I've ever read. Even Uwe Boll doesn't use that excuse.

fumanstan 08-19-08 06:45 PM

I wonder how the devs there think about all the talk from Dyack, as it seems the interviews are causing more of a negative reaction then the actual long development time.

Didn't you hear, Dyack wrote the entire game. He even created all the art assets. Why else do you think it took 10 years to create?

taffer 08-19-08 07:34 PM

I wonder if they will send out instructions on how to "properly play the game" like Factor 5 did when all the negative reviews for Lair started coming in.

Chris_D 08-19-08 07:59 PM

I dunno, all this personalisation is going a bit far. So let's put that aside for a moment shall we...

Most of the responses I've read to the full game, both negative and positive, have said that the demo is very representative of the final game, therefore it seems obvious that you can base your purchasing decision almost entirely around your own experience with the demo. For me, I enjoyed the demo, but it did have a fair few quirks, so I might dip in at around the $30 mark I think.

Back to the controversy. I think we can all agree that Dennis says some things that are a bit silly at times. Also, more importantly, he really shouldn't be wasting his time and energy jousting with the trash on NeoGaffe. Still, if anyone has the time to go around to check out the other side of the argument at NG along with the vitriolic garbage spewed forth from many of the posters there, well, they might truly lose hope for the human race. I know I almost did :o.

Flay 08-19-08 08:26 PM

Dyack got a bit too involved with fighting for Too Human's reputation on the internet. I hadn't ventured into NEOGaf in about 7 years until today and I was quickly reminded why I stopped posting there. Regardless, his diatribe on that July 3rd 1up podcast is way over the top.

I feel sorry for the people that work at SK. The game is declared mediocre by the gaming paparazzi and their front-man is being ridiculed all over the net. If the game sells poorly (which is never a given, Kane & Lynch anyone?), it's going to be an even bigger mess for SK.

I'm picking up the title tomorrow morning to see for myself. I started messing around with the demo again today with a Berserker and I'm starting to understand the combo system a bit more.

taffer 08-19-08 08:53 PM

I wonder what the development costs were for Too Human. The game was in development for a decade and went through three different consoles (PS1 to Cube to 360) and multiple engines. The costs couldn't have been cheap. SK is going to be hurting if Too Human does badly.
