Tomb Raider: Underworld

I didn't see a thread dedicated to this title so I figured I'd start one.

Haven't watched it yet (still stuck on dialup) but, if the screenshots I've seen are any indication, this game is gonna be sweet.

It sorta reminds me of a Media Ventures (or whatever they call themselves these days) track. And I mean that in a good way.

Looks sweet! And Laura has a great ass to boot

Playstation magazine also has an interesting (albeit short) preview in their latest issue. Interesting to know it begins with return of an old foe.
Spoiler:
PSM was mum as to who but it's been confirmed elswhere that Natla is the villain once again.

So how soon before a playable demo is released in the US?

TOMB RAIDER UNDERWORLD DEMO OCT '08
Copyright 2008 Eidos plc Press Release

[ October 6th 2008 ]

Eidos Interactive, creator of some of the world's leading video game properties, today announces an agreement with Microsoft to release two brand new downloadable chapters in the continuing Tomb Raider adventures of Lara Croft.

Containing up to six hours of new gameplay and content for Tomb Raider: Underworld, the chapters will be available exclusively on Xbox LIVE Marketplace for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. A demo for Tomb Raider: Underworld will also be available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace in October.

Offering entirely new content specifically designed to extend the Tomb Raider: Underworld experience, Tomb Raider: Underworld - Beneath the Ashes and Tomb Raider: Underworld - Lara's Shadow will deliver two very different single player gameplay experiences.

Tomb Raider: Underworld - Beneath the Ashes takes place after the Underworld story has finished and will feature an incredible new environment to explore, additional secrets to unlock and different enemies to fight. Tomb Raider: Underworld - Lara's Shadow will introduce players to a new kind of playable character and create a unique Tomb Raider experience.

The first new chapter, Tomb Raider: Underworld - Beneath the Ashes, will be available for download exclusively on Xbox LIVE Marketplace this Christmas. Tomb Raider: Underworld - Lara's Shadow will follow in early 2009.

"We are constantly looking at ways to extend our franchises, whilst developing a deeper relationship with our players. The retail release of any videogame is just the start of the player experience, from there it all depends where you want to take the player in terms of ideas and innovation," said Sean Vesce, General Manager for Crystal Dynamics. "With these additional chapters and the online reach of Xbox LIVE, we are able to deliver exclusive content to millions of gamers worldwide."

"We're thrilled that Xbox owners will be able to extend their Lara Croft adventures with exclusive Tomb Raider: Underworld episodes," said George Peckham, General Manager of Global Third Party Publishing for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business. "We look forward to continue working closely with our great publishing partners to deliver the most robust gaming experiences, only on Xbox 360."

Tomb Raider: Underworld will release on Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, Wii, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and PC Games for Windows platforms. With development led by Crystal Dynamics, developers of the recent Tomb Raider blockbusters, Tomb Raider: Underworld represents a new advancement in exploration-based gameplay.

As the fearless adventurer Lara Croft, players explore, raid and solve the mysteries of exotic locations around the world, each designed in breathtaking high-definition visual fidelity that creates a truly believable world and delivers a new level of challenge and choice.

Tomb Raider: Underworld is co-published by Eidos and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in North America and will be available in November.

EIDOS EXPANDS ON EXTENDED CHAPTERS
Copyright 2008 www.tombraiderchronicles.com

[ October 7th 2008 ]

The announcement by Eidos to produce extended chapters exclusively for owners of Microsoft's Xbox 360 video-games console has been met with mixed reaction, especially from those planning to steer Lara Croft through her latest adventure on one of the additional five platforms being catered for. We checked in with Eidos who shed some light on the decision.

"Microsoft asked us how we could extend the fantastic Tomb Raider: Underworld gameplay experience, exclusively, for their thriving Xbox Live community and these two new downloadable chapters were the result." says Eidos, who also confirm there are no plans for additional downloadable content for PS3.

Beneath The Ashes, the first extended chapter, will be released late December in time for Christmas. Lara's Shadow, the second installment, will debut in early 2009. The downloadable chapters will only work in conjunction with the retail 360 Tomb Raider Underworld disc.

On the decision to exclusive partner with Microsoft, Eidos says: "Microsoft asked us how we could extend the fantastic Tomb Raider: Underworld gameplay experience for their thriving Xbox Live community and this exclusive content was the result."

"Both extended chapters feature individual storylines, based in different environments and with very different mission objectives and gameplay. They are linked to Underworld, they take place following events that occur during Underworld. "

On the subject of a forthcoming Tomb Raider Underworld demo, Eidos confirms the demo - for both Xbox 360 and PC owners - is "based upon the first section of the second level, Thailand."

Well I decided to pop Anniversary back in last night to try and finish before Underworld comes out(never played the original TR). I'm almost through Greece (50% mark). Jesus the platforming aspect of this game sucks. The precision required for some jumps are frustratingly brutal. Some sections were truly pissing me off last night. I hope that is because of the original and not the direction the series is taking. I don't recall Legend being so brutal to the player. Hopefully Underworld is better. You can make a game hard without so many trial-by-error-fall-to-your-death moments.

Try playing it with the manual grab on. Sure it's annoying to always have to press the R2 button when jumping for a ledge (blame that on the hardcore fans whining that they want all TR games to be a carbon copy of the first one, regardless of the advances in gameplay mechanics over the years). There are still hair pulling moments when you know she should have easily made the jump but they are less so than without the use of the manual grab.

I just hope we don't see a return to the tank-like controls of the original. :(

Looking forward to this.

According to MajorNelson, the Underworld demo is on the marketplace now, which is great news. I just finished Anniversary last night. Talk about timing!

Cool. After you play the demo, please post your thoughts here to let us know what it's like? :)

By the way, how did the manual grab work out for you?

Michael Corvin 10-29-08 09:37 AM

 The manual grab didn't last too long. After playing so many hours my brain couldn't grasp the concept of hitting a button to land my jumps. I would just get into a groove where I was playing Lara like a Mario game so I wasn't taking the time to line my jumps up perfectly. I just had to slow it down.

I tried out a bit of Underworld last night. It was too late to run through the whole demo, so I'm not sure how far I got. It was mostly platforming with a few battles with Bengal Tigers. It's evident they wanted to show of Lara's new(?) balancing 'tightrope' skills. You can now climb on top of bars and jump instead of just swinging. She can also jump between two elements to get higher(think jumping up an elevator shaft without crevices to grab onto). There weren't any puzzles to solve in what I've done so far. What I did find really interesting is that with the environment looking so lush and alive it is harder to clearly see ledges/vines and where you are supposed to go. They don't stick out as clear as the two previous games, which could make things interesting.

Graphically, it looks great. Of course I'm coming off Anniversary which looked worse than Legend. Looks like all the next gen tech went into the environment. The jungle is lush and somewhat interactive. If you run through some branches, Lara will push them aside as you are running. Lara looks great, she gets dirty while running around, but I was a tad disappointed that running around in water/swimming didn't clean her off. I mean, why go halfway, you know? It's been a while since I played Legend, but they have given Lara some kick moves, which I don't recall in that one. You can stomp spiders & scorpions that attack. There is a jump kick as well. I was also surprised that Lara has some 'weight' to her. She actually 'feels' like a person you are controlling and not just a paper doll you are manipulating through the environment, like in Anniversary.

So, I loved it and even though I didn't get through the full demo, I'm sold. What I played of it was already more interesting than anything in Anniversary, IMO, and I think a lot of it has to do with how great it looks. The way Lara 'feels' is also a big part of it. I'm not a graphics whore by any means, but it does pull you into the experience more.
