just bought a sega genesis. Questions

I found a sega genesis model 2 system at a flea market today . paid $60 for the system, all the hookups, 2 regular controllers 1 six button controller, a multiplayer adapter, 1 turbo controller and the following games:

sonic spinball
sonic 1 and 2
sonic & knuckles
mickey mania
ms.pac-man
dynamite headdy
ren and stimpy
eco the tides of time
shinobi 3
outdoors bass tournament 96
super smash tv
goofys hysterical history tour
taz in escape from mars
world series baseball
jurassic park
marble madness
pga tour golf
super monaco GP
sega club wacky worlds
wheel of fortune

this is my first sega genesis console so I have a few questions. Was this a good deal? 90% of the games are in its original box with the manuals. I know some of the games are definite keepers, but not sure about the rest. What are some other good games on the system? I'm also considering getting the 32X and sega cd add on. Whats the best price on both? I also have a super nintendo so when it comes to buying a game thats available for both systems, which one is the best to play on?

Was it a good deal? I'd rather have the $60. It looks like I had nearly all of those games. My favorite games you don't have are Earthworm Jim 1 & 2 and Toe Jam & Earl.

I don't think you'll have as much fun with those games as you think (I found this to be true for me when I bought an old NES and 20 or so games) but it's only $60 and you might find yourself completely immersed in some of them. I used to love World Series Baseball but I couldn't see playing it for more than a game or two today just because that genre of game has evolved so much.

Genesis was better for sports than SNES because it had a quicker processor. Graphics were prettier but a little slower on SNES due to the increased color count, 256 vs, I believe 64 for Genesis. Sega CD had some pretty good games but many clunkers as well. 32x is probably only worth it if it's really cheap and you get Doom and Star Wars Arcade, those are the only two games worth bothering with that I recall.

Agreed.

Up until a few months ago, I pretty much had every system possible hooked up to my HDTV. And with the technological advancements of HD tv's and the greatness of XBOX 360/PS3, I just never played any of the other systems. I ended up selling everything (which took years to compile) and I haven't missed them at all.

You should have gone the emulation route (the free kind), whenever I am in a classic mood I just play some sega games on my mac or PSP.

60 bucks well spent....

Chris_D 07-05-08 09:49 PM

Note that some of these I haven't played so I'm just going off the top of my head as someone who use to religiously read all megadrive game reviews.

sonic spinball - keep
sonic 1 and 2 - keep
sonic & knuckles - keep
mickey mania - nah
ms.pac-man - maybe there are better versions but fun i guess?
dynamite headdy - hmmm
ren and stimpy - hmmm
eco the tides of time - keep
shinobi 3 - keep
outdoors bass tournament 96 - ditch
super smash tv - maybe keep
goofys hysterical history tour - ditch
taz in escape from mars - ditch
world series baseball - ditch
jurassic park - hmmm
marble madness - maybe keep
pga tour golf - ditch
super monaco GP - ditch
sega club wacky worlds - ditch
wheel of fortune - ditch

Some to look out for -

Streets of Rage 2 and 3 (still the best scrolling fighters around)
Phantasy Star 2-4 (if you can handle old school grind these are great)
Sword of Vermillion (clunky and simple, but fun old school 16bit rpg - also one of the early ones with action combat)
Toe Jam and Earl 1 (not 2) - still fun 2 player coop
Lots of the 2D shmups
Normally I think old sports games are a waste of time but the early EA ice hockey games , right from the very first game are great arcade fun.

Yeah but those are illegal -wink-

For some reason i just like playing the original cartridge over an emulated one. There's just something about popping in the game and playing with the original controller. It takes me back to that time.

edit to add: thanks for the list Chris. I'll probably pick up the phantasy star games.

Not a BAAD deal but you're missing a few things...

Rocket Knight Adventures
Sonic 3
Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition
Castle of Illusion
Vectorman
Gunstar Heroes
Castlevania Bloodlines
Contra Harp Corps.

Ginwen 07-06-08 02:14 AM

You guys covered most of the good ones, but you're missing Shining Force I and II (not that you can actually find them, but if you do they're good fun). I also really like the Road Rash games, especially 2.

Castle of Illusion

My favorite Genesis title ever. (With Phantasy Star a close runner-up.)

I think you got a great deal for $60. I'm sure plenty of people would drop near that much for a compilation for the 360 that featured those same titles. (And anyone that's bought Ecco, Smash TV and Sonic on XBLA dropped about $20 for just those three titles.) Hell, I paid $60 for Halo 3 in December and I've only played it for about 10 minutes. You'll get far more use out of your new system than that.

Agreed on both. The original NHL Hockey for the Genesis is perhaps the most fun I've ever had with a videogame.

agreed as well. NHL '97 on Genesis was one of the funnest sports games i've ever played.

Toe Jam & Earl is my all time favorite. For shooters, Gaiares and Thunder Force III were top notch.

2nd for Shadowrun, I wish they would remake for a new system. Might have to pull out my Sega and hook it up to play it again.

3rd that. Loved that game, one of the more darker games I played as an early teen. My all time favourite Genesis games: Landstalker...It's a poor mans zelda but its pretty damn fun and challenging.

I always enjoyed the road rash series as well.

Always surprised they didn't make Road Rash into a series on later consoles.

it is NOT a poor mans Zelda, it holds up very well to all but 3 Zelda games. I loved Landstalker.

I completely forgot to mention Landstalker.. whoops.. I like it more than Zelda LTTP so there you go.

I'll 3rd Shadowrun. Wasted many days playing that one.

I'll also throw in the Mutant league sports games... Football and Hockey I believe... Fun sports games with violence thrown in...

Another vote for Landstalker, one of my favorite games ever.

And Toe Jam and Earl of course but that goes without saying.

Gideon68 07-07-08 09:07 AM

Eternal Champions
Vay
Lunar I and II
Popful Mail

DJ_Longfellow 07-07-08 12:00 PM

maingon 07-07-08 12:37 PM
