I wonder if they thought the technology was "good enough," but decided it needed some more fine tuning after the complaints about some games being annoying due to lack of accuracy with the Wiimote.

The problem is that it's an online game... as such, if they let you run around as actual DC characters, you'd be stuck as Kamandi or something, as Superman, Batman, etc. would all be taken really early. So it is more like City of Heroes set in the DC universe.

I agree that they should make a Marvel Ultimate Alliance-type game, though.

This year definitely seems like the final nail in the coffin of E3. The 3 'bigs' failed to deliver and everyone else is barely making a splash either. It just seems like everyone is just half-assing it this year.

Out of the seven games I listed only Rock Band made it to the table thus far. Well, GH:WT if what they showed counts. The other five are still MIA (Riddick, Serious Sam, BG&E2, Pikmin & Kid Icarus)

Miyamoto explaining why there were no 'core' gamers:

think that there’s probably one other element to it, and that’s that our view of how we use E3 has changed. For a very long time, E3 was an event where — and certainly Nintendo included — catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.

So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we’re still working on many of those titles, but it’s just not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25710005/

That makes me feel a little more at ease, Basically Nintendo is only going to show for the most part things like voice chat and Wii drums...rather than the next Zelda or Mario.

Eh, why not do a little of both? We're talking about an hour plus conference. All they needed was a two minute video montage with clips from some hardcore games in the works and gamers would have ate it up. Miyamoto can suck it.

No shit.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and call bullshit on Miyamoto here.

There is no fucking way that if they had a game the caliber of a Mario or Zelda that they wouldn't show it off at E3 - No. Fucking. Way. I'm sure they're working on such games, but they're just a real long ways off, IOW, they pretty much have nothing for the next year. Further, the fact that they showed Animal Crossing runs contrary to his statement anyways.

But at least this shows that they know they fucked up and will hopefully get their shit in gear and make the types of games that put them on the map in the first place.

Doesn't Nintendo typically show off their own big stuff at Tokyo Game Show or whatever?

I think so, last year they did the cute stuff at E3 (wii fit I thought), and the hardcore stuff at the famitsu, fall show (Monsterhunter 3)

I still don't know what was so much better about the MS conference over Sony. Was it all because they announced a PS3 game?

I think it was because the Gear of War 2 demo looked more impressive than any Sony exclusive - and it's a sequel to a popular franchise, so it has built-in hype.

And the Netflix thing too.

Overall, disappointing though. The big things I'm looking forward to are GOW 2 for the 360 and GOW 3 for PS3.

Nintendo finally admits E3 was a disappointment
Posted Aug 19th 2008 1:47PM by David Hinkle

During an interview with VGChartz, Nintendo's resident wrist-hurting, Shaun White-introducing marketing lady, Cammie Dunaway, commented that Nintendo's E3 showing was a bit of a disappointment. You don't say?

"I would say the message is we were disappointed with our performance at E3," commented Dunaway. "There were titles like Wario which we think will be really fun titles that we should have show cased." Yes, we'd have to agree. It was certainly the best game we played at the show. But what about this Pikmin 3 business?

"We were excited that Mr. Miyamoto made the commitment that Pikmin is coming," she said. "It would have been nice if we could have said that on stage. But, we think it was a good recognition for us that we care for our core fans, and not just the new people who are now discovering Nintendo."

And the thing is, these things are still in short supply at retail, because the people buying them have no idea what an E3 is and they don't know/care that there is a dearth of games the rest of the year.

I just read Mrs. Dunaways interview in Septemeber's GameInformer and wow, is this woman clueless!

She came off as another typical corporate hire. Her previous experience was with Frito Lay and Yahoo and she comes over to Nintendo and is using her family's experience as a gamer as basis on what report to the people uptairs. When asked about the lack of drive space on the Wii and the effect this has on people purchasing new Virtual console items her response was:

"I hear you, but we don't have storage announcements to make right now. I know at my house, because we buy pretty much everything that's new on Wii Ware every week, what I've found with my own behavior is that we want to play what's new and so we buy what's new. We delete somthing we haven't played in a while, knowing that if we want to go back and we get it we won't have to pay again. So that's the way that a lot of consumers are managing it."

Reporter: But that seems far from ideal, Are there other solutions being looked at?

CD:"It's just not something I'm prepared to comment on"

Three things:

1- Where on earth did Cammie get her MBA? Because I went to business school also, and the first thing they teach you is that you don't use you personal tendencies and taste to base your business decisions.

2- Did anyone knew that you could delete Virtual consoles purchases and download them again later on without having to pay?

3- She is the fucking Vice President of Marketing for Nintendo. Didn't she do any research before that crapfest they gave at E3? Wasn't she supossed to know what was expected of the fans and reporters of E3? Since when is E3 a stage to give financial reports and have an uncharismatic woman babbling about topics she clearly has no knowledge of?
