100% completion?

Do you usually play games as fast as you can beating them, or do you go around beating all the sidequests before beating the actual game/after the actual game is beaten, if possible? If so, which games have you done 100% everything on?

Xbox 360 achievements sparked this post... right now I am trying to get 100% Achievements on Assassin's Creed, and wondered if anyone else does the same with achievements, or any game period.

mhg83 06-28-08 10:11 PM

I have way too many games to try and get 100 percent. I'll play through the campaign, be satisfied and move on to the next game.

nemein 06-28-08 10:17 PM

Same here, mainly just interested in the main campaign and then move on. If I liked the game enough I may try to go back and replay it on a different difficulty (or if like Halo there is the internal achievements/icons for completing things on different levels). As far as the 360 "achievements" though I really don't care about those, esp considering the number of them that are related to multiplayer play, which I don't usually do.

ruddiger_718 06-28-08 10:36 PM

I think the only game I hit the 100% was Super Mario 64

dvdsteve2000 06-28-08 11:26 PM

I have 1000/1000 on madden 06, and the honorable mentions are bioshock (920), assassin's creed (855), Oblivion (950), and dead rising (880). The latter one's are within reach, but I can't seem to find the time or patience to complete them.

JasonF 06-28-08 11:59 PM

I have 100% on Oblivion and on Enchanted Arms. I had 100% on Bioshock, but then they rolled out the expansion. I'm close to 100% on Assassin's Creed, but I doubt I'll go back to get the ones I'm missing, as it would involve replaying the whole game.

Generally, I like to do all the side quests. I don't really like to get "level your character up to level 43 trillion" or "kill eleven jillion bad guys with a spork" type achievements.

TimeandTide 06-29-08 12:48 AM

The only game I'm even remotely close to 100% is Marvel: UA. IIRC, I'm at 920/1200.

beavis69 06-29-08 08:20 AM

I do it for games i love and am going to continue playing after the main part is over. Only two ive gotten 100% on are Call of Duty 2 and Skate

lordwow 06-29-08 10:14 AM

I have 1000/1000 on COD4, GUN and The Bigs. I'm pretty close on Madden 08, Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed

I also have a 100%ed super mario world game file on my Wii.

argh923 06-29-08 10:48 AM

According to 360Voice, I have 1000/1000 on 10 retail games. I'm shooting for it on GTA IV right now...not sure if I'll wind up getting some of those multiplayer achievements though.

DeanoBKN 06-29-08 01:07 PM

I finish the story and move on. I don't have the time to try to get 100% or all 1,000 points.

Shagrath 06-29-08 02:02 PM

I do my best go get all of the achievements in a game, unless a lot of those are multiplayer. If I can get 1000 without even finishing the game, I may do that as well, depending on the caliber of the title.

PopcornTreeCt 06-29-08 02:03 PM

I have 1000/1000 on Madden 08, Fight Night and Lost. Those are all pretty easy to get. I got up 93% completion on Bully but gave up. I'm at 83% completion on Lego Indiana Jones but I'll probably retire that one.

McHawkson 06-29-08 02:24 PM

I don't give a shit about achievements. I just bought those games to have fun, not focus on getting achievements - so that you can bragging how good you are. Really, it's pointless..

I do have fun playing the games, and I don't 'brag' about how good I am. At $60 per game, I'm getting my money out of it, and for the 360, that includes shooting for some achievements. If I had Assassin's Creed for the PS3, I'll be damned if I'd spend the time looking for those flags, but I like the feeling of accomplishment (and reward) for playing the hell out of a game that I like.
You've never tried to beat your own (or someone elses) high score on a game before? If so, why? Wouldn't that be...pointless?

Michael Corvin 06-29-08 03:30 PM

There are many factors that go into my answering this question. First did I like the game enough to do side quests? Do I have a backlog of other games to get to? Are the achievements even attainable(i.e. excluding bullshit MP ones)?

I used to try for 100% on all of them. My backlog is preventing me from doing that right now. Now I just want to finish the campain on most.

darkside 06-29-08 03:37 PM

It is rare. Last game I got 100% on was New Super Mario Bros on DS. I just don't have the time and have too many other new games I want to start.

I did take a shot at 100% on GTAIV, but missed one damn pigeon and had no interest in spending hours looking for it.

pinata242 06-29-08 06:35 PM

I've always tried to do everything in a game. I do like that achievements guide you towards certain tasks and "reward" you for something. I do wish some of them weren't stupid crap, but the completest in me won't let me walk away if they are obtainable. I have 1000/1000 in 7 retail games (King Kong, TMNT, Madden 06, Fight Night 3, M:UA (1250), LSW2, and Blue Dragon) and 18 XBLA games. Soon going to add Eternal Sonata and Lego Indy to that list of retail games.

Eternal Sonata is a perfect example of a game I like well enough to play twice, but am pissed they require 2 playthroughs to get 100%. The most you can get on a single, doing everything possible, is 340 - and that's if you know to do it, otherwise 120 is the max. The other 660 must be played on a much harder "New Game+" and there are new events to do - again, if you know to do them. I don't think it would be possible w/o an achievement guide. I don't know if that defeats the purpose of them, but it's not like anyone else is doing them. I still achieve them, but I just need to be told to "go back to this Chapter 2 spot in Chapter 6 once you get access to the teleporter and a new person will be there. Play Score Piece 23 with him to get item X for Achievement Y."

That's bullshit, but I like the game enough to put up with it.

lordwow 06-29-08 07:26 PM

Mass Effect requires, at least, 3 playthroughs to get 100%. And you have to complete most of the side missions each time. Which is pretty ridiculous.

BigPete 06-29-08 07:43 PM

Last 100% for me was Super Mario World on SNES. Right now, I'm trying my damnedest to find the patience to 100% Mario Galaxy, but some of those levels are so damn cheap it's hard not to quit.

Schloob1 06-29-08 07:55 PM

Definitely like to try and play the games to 100% completion. Achievements for me now are just like back in the good old Nintendo days of trying to find all the hearts in Zelda for example or how fast one could finish one of the Super Mario Bros. games. That being said at the moment I believe I am at 52 retail games completed and on the verge shortly of finishing Tenchu Z, a very decent game actually if not for the one thing that usually upsets me of diffulculties not being stackable and having to play each one seperately to ge the achievement.

MangeM 06-29-08 08:14 PM

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, it boils down to how much I like the game and/or if I've got time to kill but nothing better to do.
Though it depends on how you look at it I guess, many games will give you 1000/1000 without requiring 100% ( if whe're talking 360 & achievements).

But going by the numbers I have 29 retail games completed 1000/1000, XBLA stands at a measly 6 games completed 200/200.
The 100% ones that come to mind ATM are: Assassins Creed, Bully, Gun & Just Cause.

tonyc3742 06-29-08 08:36 PM

I play till I finish the story, or till I get bored. Depending on the game I'll branch off from the main story and do side things, if they're fun; or will just wander around learning skills and advancing my character (RPGs). I like some achievements, but I don't spend hours traversing looking for the 1000th nitpicky little whatever. I like achievements that are either given through the story, or at least start in the story requirements (get 100 Perfects through the course of the game, or something.) I detest achievements that are there solely to make you play the game again (get both endings, both use only blade weapons and use only gun weapons, etc.)
I don't think I've ever hit 100% completion in any game. Too many RPGs have things like "collect the treasure in the third house in the fifth village for .01% completion" that there's only about a .01% chance of you lucking into.
At the point it becomes work, I stop bothering. The really good achievements, imho, keep it attainable and reasonable and reachable, and are based on a game that's fun enough to make you want to keep doing it. I know there are a lot of HardCore gamers who measure the quality of their lives by their gamerscore, so they can keep the "Collect a hair from every NPC's head" type achievements, those aren't for me.

Gooter 06-30-08 09:33 AM

I try to get as many achievements as I can on my first play through. I generally do not use a guide on the first run through although I look at what the achievements are so I know what to look out for. If I enjoyed the game, I will go back and try to get 100% excluding the MP ones (I HATE those). I tend to pick up most of my games when they hit the bargain bin and MP is usually dead by then anyway.

My 100% are: FN3, Gun, and King Kong.

boredsilly 06-30-08 10:24 AM

Nah, I'm more of a leisure gamer. I'm lucky if I actually beat a game. The only exception is when you have to do some sort of thing to unlock a hidden character or something. When that's on the table, I may put in the effort.

Chew 06-30-08 10:31 AM

I only hit about 43% on Lego Indiana Jones after completing all the movies/chapters. I went back to pick up a lot of the artifacts I missed to unlock the Young Indy level. I think I spent more time on the artifacts than I did on the original run-through and that was for a measly 10 minute bonus level. I may of finished closer to 55%.

I play games to storyline completion, but I'm no longer going to try for these bonus things. I just have too many other games I want to play.

DRG 06-30-08 03:19 PM

I'm a completionist, assuming the achievements are attainable and single-player. I'm someone who prefers to play the hell out of the games I do buy, but I don't buy a lot of games so I can concentrate on the ones I do play. So far this year I've only really played 5 games: Call of Duty 4, Lost: Via Domus (ha), Rock Band, GTA4, and WiiFit.

I've 100%ed Dead Rising, Lost, and Bioshock (pre-expansion). I've earned all the single player achievements on Saints Row.

Me too. Oddly enough Mass Effect is probably the only game this generation I've gone back and played a 2nd time through, and i'm even working on a 3rd, simply to see different people's reactions to the things you can say.

GreenMonkey 06-30-08 03:50 PM

I'm interested in doing all the subquests in RPGs if they don't make my character uber-powered and the game boring (FFX).

I'm not interested in achievement points. They are just e-phallus to me. I don't get it. The only ones that seem to have any point to me are the ones added to old, oldschool pointless arcade games like Ms. Pacman, some of them are fun to do.

I'm interested in playing the game and experiencing the story. Not spending hours killing 100000000 zombies or trying on every outfit or killing 800 people with the sniper rifle or something. For some sort of points that don't have any purpose. If I could earn something with achievement points maybe I would get it - like gamerpics or something - I just don't get the whole achievement thing. No interest.

So for madden 2006, did you actually play through 30 years of franchise, or did you just kinda sim through it? I simmed through it and even that was taxing my patience.

I agree with most people about the JRPG thing... I find that if I try to get 100%, I need to rely on a guide or risk missing something vital, and then when I rely on a guide I'm not really having fun playing the game, just following detailed instructions.

For a game like assassin's creed... again, I don't think there's any way I could get all the flags without either wasting a lot of time wandering, or wasting a lot of time looking at maps trying to find the flags I missed. If I ever get those achievements, it'll be because of my obsessive-compulsive nature, not because it's fun.

On the other hand, the Mass Effect ones seem doable, even though you have to play through a bunch of times. And the ones like in Dead Rising, while seemingly impossible, are pretty cool added incentives to play the game longer. I may never get 100% on them, but the games are fun enough to at least give it a go. Same for something like DMC4, with the achievements for the harder difficulty levels.

my case, as well.

metalhead212 07-01-08 01:21 PM

Before achievements were created, 100% completion to me meant beating the game and playing it until it wasn't fun anymore. Now, those bastard achievements! They make me do things I don't want to do. "It hurts down there" :(

Tarantino 07-02-08 11:01 AM

Nope. It actually rarely happens that I'm interested long enough to even finish a game. Hell, as an example, I played through some of act 1 of Metal Gear 4 and I haven't picked it up since.

My most played games are the ones I can pick up and play with friends, or sports games. Madden, Rock Band, and COD4.
