What's even funnier about that, is that after I saw that retarded kids video. I went downstairs to my gameroom and started playing contra on my playchoice 10 and got further than I ever have before without continuing (3rd level). Although, there is a bit of a different using arcade controllers vs. the nes one.

The list is completely invalidated now. There is no way that of all the mario games Galaxy and Super Mario World makes the list when you have at least Mario 64, Mario 3 and Super Mario that still hold up extremely well to this day. Super Mario is a classic that helped bring gaming back.

Super Mario World was teh suck.

Not a bad list, I think Guitar Hero deserves the spot, it's definitely iconic at this point in history. I would have not included arcade ports though (like Street Fighter II and Tekken 3) since the arcade versions are definitive themselves, I would rather see something else included like Sonic or Toe Jam & Earl.

Can't believe they left out Diablo 2 on the list. Truly one of the best game I ever played on the PC.

Good call. I love the X-Wing/TIE fighter franchise, but Diablo II should probably replace it on this list.

I agree with Super Mario World > Mario 3

I don't think I've ever read a "best of" list that agreed with me on that.

I'm also in the camp that feels that Super Mario World is a better game than Super Mario Bros 3.

I was actually considering subscribing to EW, too. But no Shawshank on a Top 100 list?! WTF?!

GTA III should be in the top 3. It pretty much created an entire genre and still remains the best out of all its clones. (Well, maybe not GTA IV) Same goes for GoldenEye.

25 years ago was 1983, yet there are no NES games on that list, no 2600 games, no Sega Genesis games? Baloney, I say. The list is clearly skewed to the last decade or so. Where are the following:

M.U.L.E
Seven Cities of Gold
Super Mario Brothers
Metroid
Legend of Zelda
Any Final Fantasy game
Any Dragon Warrior Game
Bard's Tale
Might & Magic
Double Dragon
Jumpman
Lode Runner
Mario Brothers

Some more recent games (i.e. only 10-15 years old) that belong on a list like this:

Baldur's Gate
Deus Ex
Command & Conquer

That would be alright, if not for the fact that Mario first flew in SMB3.

This is an EW list? This seems like the same under-researched "best of" list that no-name game sites make up.

Deus Ex is at #23.

Where is NFL 2K5? Absolutely THE best football game ever made!? Also, while Halo was the original, I think Halo 2 should be there because of it's online play. Another of my faves that were excluded...Intelligent Qube. And another vote for Sonic (2).

That's another typo too. It is listed as a PS game, but Deus Ex is a PC game. The (inferior) sequel Deus Ex: Invisible War was the console game.

I, too, am surprised that Baldur's Gate (PC, not console), Planescape: Torment, and Fallout 1 & 2 did not make the list. Those three games are widely regarded as being the best cRPGs ever made. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion did make the list, but most people regard it as being good, not great, and certainly not one of the best cRPGs like Baldur's Gate, Planescape, or Fallout.

I imagine it is easy to ignore sports titles since they have yearly releases. Makes it hard for one to stand out over the rest.

Agreed. I'm a bit surprised not to see Quake. It was my first 3D game and I bought one of the first 3D cards to play it. Anyone remember 3dfx?

This would be true if 2k5 was never released. Madden is the same drivel every year. I recently played madden 06 to get the 1k/1k and it's just as bad as last years. (IMO), 2k5 is the reason for the monopoly on NFL games (by EA), that game scared the shit out of them.

What is the most extreme slap in the face is that Madden 2005 actually gets a spot on that list over NFL2k5. That is an absolute travesty.

The only travesty is that people keep bringing this up when it is absolutely wrong.

It wasn't a slam on you. I was just pointing out that even EW wouldn't put the PS version of Doom above the PC version.

I have the magazine, and read the article -- I don't think they've played a lot of these games. For example, they called Gears of War a FPS?

Popularity contest. Sadly, many people haven't seen Shawshank.

Looking at the list again, how is GTA IV on the list and no MGS 4? Don't get me wrong, I loved GTA IV. Also, where is the Sims? I know Sim City is there but isn't the Sims the highest selling PC game of all time?
