How much money did GTA IV make?

Everything I saw pre-release was that this was going to be the biggest game ever and I never saw anything afterwards. Have sales figures been released yet? How many consoles were purchased this past week?

Michael Corvin 05-03-08 10:03 PM

It hasn't even been a week yet. It's been a whole 5 days. Give it a few more days.

fumanstan 05-03-08 10:31 PM

Yeah, game sales typically don't come that quick, however there have been reports from both Sony and Microsoft about how GTA4's release has boosted console sales.

PopcornTreeCt 05-04-08 03:23 PM

C'mon we've got Iron Man's numbers and that was only 3 days! Grrr...

DiedLaughing 05-04-08 08:40 PM

I personally picked up a PS3 system this weekend, just to play GTA IV. For me this is the biggest game in years. I wasnt even interested in a PS3 or video games until this came out.

Deftones 05-04-08 08:48 PM

Well, if it sold 5 million copies at $59.99 that would be $299,950,000 in revenue. Now that's not taking into account the ultimate edition that retailed for $89.99. Not sure what they breakdown of regular to ultimate editions sold. They probably sold quite a few of those as well.

sg2386 05-04-08 08:57 PM

i read they expected $400 million the first week.

edstein 05-05-08 12:50 AM

Lazlo mentioned that Rockstar has been running in the red for a couple of years now wjile developing this game. Most of this money will not be profit. They'll need to repay some back debt.

I had read somewhere that GTA IV cost roughly $100mil to make, though that's not taking into account the massive advertising costs among other costs. I still believe they're going to break-even this week alone.

Plus Microsoft gave them $50 million for the DLC. That helped a bit.

RichC2 05-06-08 11:04 AM

It sold, up through May 3rd (Around 5 days worth) -

USA:
Xbox360 2,317,774
PS3 1,386,032

Europe
X360/PS3 combines: 690,000

So around 4393806 copies not counting other regions.

All are estimations, final numbers will come out when NPD feels.

Kicker_of_Elves 05-06-08 12:52 PM

Wow, i'm surprised it sold almost a million more copies on the 360 then the PS3. I knew it would but not by that many.

DGibFen 05-07-08 09:08 AM

According to Shacknews, GTA IV missed the $400 million mark.

Spoiler:
It made $500 million, with worldwide sales of 6 million units - 3.6 million units sold on the first day.

But how many 360 owners are there vs. PS3 owners? Plus a good number of PS3 owners really have no interest in games.

Where did this come from? Every PS3 owner I know bought this game.

According to VGChartz.com, here are the system hardware sales for North America:

Xbox 360 - 11.72 million
PS3 - 4.88 million

I wonder how it sold in Japan (if it was even released there yet). I know the previous GTA games sold shockingly poorly in Japan for whatever cultural reason...

GTAIV breaks records, $500 million first week sales

Posted May 7th 2008 10:45AM by Dustin Burg

Holy record breaking Grand Theft Auto IV sales Rockstar! We knew GTAIV would be a sales behemoth, but never did we think it would rack up hundreds of million dollars in sales its first week on U.S. shelves. But that's exactly what it did.

Rockstar and Take-Two just announced that U.S. GTAIV sales reached $500 million in sales the first week, which means 6 million copies were purchased from retailers nationwide. GTAIV also shattered Halo 3's $170 million twenty-four hour sales record, ringing up some $310 million in sales on April 29th alone. We guarantee it's all smiles over at the offices of Take-Two and Rockstar, though truckloads of cash tend to do that to a person.

Pixy is right, that statement is false.

San Andreas was released early last year on the PS2 and sold 222k copies in its first week and a bit under a half million overall. While nothing on Europe and the US, that is still an very strong number for Japan. Especially impressive considering thats around 2 years after it's initial English releases.

Maybe not anymore, but for quite a while people who weren't really video game fans were buying PS3's because it was the cheapest (and some said best) Blu-ray player.

Given the numbers CreatureX posted, I'd say GTA sold better on the PS3 vs. 360. Could be a lot of reasons for it - more good games on 360, so more people had other games they were currently playing, history of the franchise on Playstation, whatever.

RichC2 05-07-08 12:25 PM

I own a PS3 and X360 and went the X360 route for Live reasons.

Ratio wise:

There are 11.72m X360s in homes in the US, there are an estimated 4.88m PS3s in homes in the US.

GTA IV sold 2,317,774 copies on the 360 (in US), it sold 1,386,032 copies on the PS3.

So around 1 in 5 X360 owners bought a copy (2 in 10) whereas 2 in 7 PS3 owners bought a copy. It's a notable difference, but is it a massive, awe inspiring one? naw, not really.

For GTA Vice City, 8.20 M in US, 0.47 M in Japan and 5.53 in others for a total of 14.20 Million copies sold, 3.3% sold in Japan.
