It totally does.

The last five console games I bought (full, $60 games, not cheap indies) were digital. Though I think GS only makes $2-$3 for new games like those, but I'm sure it still adds up.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

There was an article that came out this year and Sony said something like 40% of game sales for the PS4 were digital. I think the flash sales they have been having lately have helped as well too.

If Gamestop has any chance of surviving over the next few years, they need to be more aggressive with their used game pricing structure. Anyone is an idiot if they go into that store and buy a used game that is only $5 cheaper than a new game.

IMO, Gamestop would need to drastically change it's business if it wants to survive. The used game market can't be their primary thing anymore. I don't think they'll be able to do it and ultimately it'll go the way of Radio Shack.

You would be surprised to know that many of the ATT wireless stores are not actually owned by ATT, but rather Gamestop. Obviously trying to diversify themselves so they don't become irrelevant. Article here about it: http://fortune.com/2016/08/04/gamest...spring-mobile/

Thats still not a good choice... unless some new crazy designed smart phones come out. Those att mobile stores will go the way of radio shack. lol

I drive by some many of those mobile stores and they are so damn empty.

Serious recommendation: if there are any good BBQ joints in your neck of the woods, talk to them. Around here, anyway, most of 'em will smoke turkeys for Thanksgiving. That's what my wife's family has been doing for years (from several different BBQ places), and it's so, so, so much better than any other Thanksgiving turkeys I've had in my own family. Some of them will also do family-size portions of their sides, like mac & cheese and sweet potato crunch. We still cook a good bit for Thanksgiving, but because we're able to focus on a few things and divide the work across a couple different family members, everything just tastes better.

Clearly you did not read it. They are extremely profitable for them. Mobile is a very good choice to diversify into.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

I stopped into a Gamestop for the first time in many, many months recently only to be accosted as soon as I walked in the door. This was not a verbal from the counter type deal, the sales person immediately came over and just went into the spiel... "what are you looking for?" "Can I help you find anything?" "Are you a Power Up rewards member because we have a discount/deal on X."

Holy fucking shit, I'm just browsing. Leave me the fuck alone and I might actually buy something.

I took my son there to pickup Splatoon 2 with some gift cards he had... took twenty minutes to checkout as the girl behind the counter chatted a mom up over all the games coming out. The two of them made it a personal conversation about gaming as we patiently waited our turn... meanwhile some clone was talking about other nonsense to a group of teenagers while the line got longer and a register stayed wide open. I hate Gamestop.

I did and while they have made some money. They havent made up for all the money they are losing with gamestop or have lost.

And I wouldn't bet those mobile stores will remind profitable much longer.

The rumor is that GameStop is launching their own GCU/Prime competitor on September 13th, only instead of getting a 20% discount on new games, you get...well:

So used games, instead of being twice as expensive as they should be, will only be 60-80% more expensive than they should be? I'm listening....

Why would anyone want 20% off used when you can get 20% off new at BB for half the price?

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

I doubt I'll do the Gamestop thing, as I'm pretty happy with GCU and don't have as much gaming time as I did when I was younger, but it could be a good deal if they up the frequency of their B2B1F used sales. Essentially it would be $88 for 3 games and, at least around here, it's always seemed like it's pretty easy to find used copies of games within 2-3 weeks of their release.

I generally find Gamestop annoying and not worth doing business with, but they occasionally have a really good deal. The multiple, stackable trade-in offers they had for Switch pre-orders this spring are pretty much the only reason I own one at this point. I got roughly $600 in credit for trading in my WiiU and games, which likely would've netted me around half of that if I'd sold/traded them any other way.

I hope they will continue to offer just the regular power up reward membership. There's no way i'm paying 30 bucks a year for that.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

If you buy a ton of used games and trade them back in, then I could see the interest. But if you mostly buy new games at release, then you would be crazy not to go with Best Buy. Especially since they have brought back the $10 reward zone certificates with pre-order on bigger releases.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

Both the Nintendo Switch and pre-orders for the SNES Classic Edition have been extremely hard to come by, selling out almost instantly everywhere. In response, we've seen GameStop and its subsidiary, ThinkGeek, offer bundles that package those systems with things you may or may not want. According to GameStop, it's about making the online shopping experience "more convenient."

GameStop's senior director of merchandising, Eric Bright, recently spoke about the controversial subject with Glixel. "We really try to do a great job of pairing up items with things customers like to buy," he said. "In the case of the Switch, we know the customer is going to want a way to charge the Joy-Con, so we often throw in a charging device. We know the Switch has limited memory and customers like to download games, so we'll add a memory stick. And then you need a game itself, because what good is a piece of hardware without a game to play with it? We make it more convenient."

As for ThinkGeek's SNES Classic bundles, he said they chose "retro items that would appeal to those buyers." When the $80 system showed up for pre-order on its website recently, it could only be purchased in bundles ranging from $140 to $330. These consisted of extras like a Tetris lamp, Zelda chess set, or Mega Man helmet.

Bright also argued that customers do have choices outside of these bundles. "Customers have the opportunity to come into our stores and choose the accessories that they would like to bundle with their hardware, or buy online the pre-determined bundles we have put together to help make the shopping experience more convenient," he said. "Customers also have the option of coming to into our GameStop stores to purchase non-bundled product."

That hasn't always proven to be the case, however; when we attempted to pre-order a SNES Classic in an LA store last week, bundles were the only choice. Critics would also take issue with the idea that the online bundles are convenient to begin with, given that they provide little choice in what you get. But for as much of an outcry as there has been from some consumers, it hasn't been enough to stop people from buying from GameStop anyway. The retailer frequently boasts about its impressive Switch attach rate (driven by those bundles), and ThinkGeek's expensive SNES packages quickly sold out.

GameStop has already said it will have SNES Classic Editions in stock on launch day, but as of yet, we don't know what kind of bundles they may or may not be included in.
