Definitely DQ2 right before the final boss. Another one of those RPG cliches where you're doing fine, you're doing fine, then you get to the final boss and you hit a brick wall.

Pretty much. Everybody nowadays have been babied into the "Final Fantasy VII Patented Win Button Battle System" mentality so it's must come as a shock when you need to do more than hit A to attack and occasionally heal or use fire magic on an ice monster. At least, in my (bitter) opinion.

I actually like level grinding in DQ games. I especially like it when a party member has the whistle ability and I find a spot with liquid metal slimes.

I like level grinding a lot. It provides a great sense of accomplishment. It's why I prefer the DQ series to Final Fantasy.

I love DQ, but it doesn't seem like strategy-wise it's got the kind of depth you're attributing to it... at least, VII was pretty standard (still haven't opened V yet). And the DQ1 was ALL level grinding, so much so that when they eased up on the difficulty with the GBC remake, I realized for the first time how short the plot of the game. I know, I know, it was the first JRPG, but still, it's got its roots in the grind.

Is this title officially out of print? I finally decided to get off my ass and buy this game (Should have gotten it sooner, but have a heck of an RPG backlog) and had a hard time actually finding a copy. Luckily one local gamestop still had a new one though of course it was already opened for me. No luck at Target, Best Buy and even Amazon only had copies through third parties. Most of the Gamestops also had no copies including online. I'm guessing no chance for VI to hit the US.

I got the last one at my Best Buy during their B2G1 sale a few weeks ago. As far as I know dq6 and 9 are still on for US release. But the low sales are not shocking. I mean it's $40 for a 15+ year old DS port in a genre that has never done well over here. I'm not arguing if the game is "worth" $40, but look at it from the average consumer's perspective. S-E would do well to come in cheaper with dq9. They won't though.

Part 4 seems to still be in print everywhere. Why was this game pulled off the American shelves? Nobody knows why?

Yup, they're still out there.. I've heard Toys R Us is a good spot to find them.
There's a new copy at the GameStop across the street from my place.

If somebody wants the game bad enough, I may be willing to pick it up if you want to cover cost/shipping.
