I started playing Big Bang Mini today. Damn this might be my new favorite DS game. Although it doesn't seem to be too difficult. I just shoot fireworks randomly without looking and focus on my ship. Does it get harder after the Tokyo levels?

Next DS To Have HD Screen, Potentially 720p

Boy, that Satoru Iwata has been awfully mouthy recently. In addition to sounding off about the next DS having a motion sensor, he also told Asahi that it'll have a higher-resolution screen. A HIGH DEFINITION screen.

Upgrading the 256 x 192 DS, the next DS incarnation—after the DSi XL—will have a 1024 x 768 screen according to several sites, which is very close to a decent 720p res. Iwata also confirmed Nintendo is in talks with several networks for connected DS consoles, which is something he mentioned a few months back when he touched upon the likelihood of allowing ebooks to be downloaded over 3G. Not sure how useful 1024x768 (which isn't HD, but I guess 60% of 720p is close enough) will be on a 3" screen, although ideally it would be nice if the next Nintendo handheld was capable of Gamecube ports (640x480 resolution?)

Or maybe played actual GCN discs?

The next DS will not have "HD" screens.

The translation was simply "higher resolution" from the current model. And it's still a year or two away.

But hey, saying "HD" gets more hits to your website. Never change, internet, never change.

Edit: No resolution was given. "According to several sites." -ohbfrank-

So is anyone actually buying DSiWare games? They're putting out a ton of them, but without demos, clear descriptions or any good websites to steer you towards the good ones, I have no idea what's great and what's total crap. This shopping system is just terrible -- it makes the old interface for Xbox Community games look fantastic by comparison. Did anyone have the guts to make some blind buy purchases? If so, are any worth picking up?

In theory I still have my initial 1000 yen so one day I will blind buy something I guess.

nintendolife.com has good reviews of all of the DSiWare and WiiWare releases. I don't agree with every single review, but reading the review plus the user comments and forums there should give you a good picture of the game's quality.

Here's DSiWare sorted by review score:

I think Mighty Flip Champs and Pictobits are pretty great. I love Boxlife too, but I think the other two would probably appeal to a wider range of players.

I have A LOT of DSiWare downloads. I'll have to get to my DSi to go over each one, but off hand Aquia, PiCTOBiTS, Mighty Flip Champs, Trajectile and Boxlife are all really good. The other Art Style games are really good too, but I think the ones I listed will appeal to more people. The only game I've downloaded that I felt was a miss was Dragon Quest Wars.

Thanks for the recommendations. Uncle Gramps, somehow that review site tried to infect my day-old computer without even the common decency to show me porn first.

Oops! That's weird, I go to that site on a regular basis, and it never trips any warnings for me.

There's a (lame) reason for that. I forgot where I read it, but I guess the developer didn't have time, or weren't allowed to run the second half of the game through the same quality-assurance that they did for the first half, so they weren't able to properly balance the second half of the game like they did the first half. It wasn't supposed to be that hard.

I didn't think the game was that hard. Yes, I got stuck on a couple of the levels, but I didn't find it unbeatable. I guess my gaming skills aren't waning. :D

Preordered my copy of Miles Edgeworth from the Capcom store (mostly because I refuse to preorder at GameStop) and got an email today for $10 off this exclusive case. Looks pretty cool and they are only selling 150 of them. For $15 I ordered one.

Okay, Dark Void Zero is pretty bad ass. I grabbed it last night as I wanted something new to play before I went to bed and thought it was great for $5 but unsure about it overall pat that. After a second play today though I can say it is really good, regardless of the price. I've made it through the first level and it's a blast if you like NES games.

But, if it's supposed to be a "lost" NES game, why does it have stereo sound? [/nes_geek]

I'm going to try to get some info on Legends of Exidia, which appears to be a full action RPG for DSiWare.

Re: Official Nintendo DS Thread VIII: 65 Million Strong.. and Growing

I thought it was a lost dual-screen Playchoice-10 game. Was it ever meant for the NES directly? Perhaps the PC hardware could handle 2 audio channels like it handles 2 displays?

PixyJunket 02-17-10 09:46 AM

Re: Official Nintendo DS Thread VIII: 65 Million Strong.. and Growing

It's a "fake" lost game, like Retro Game Challenge.

Regardless, the PC-10 played unmodified NES games, just with added text hints, so still no stereo sound.

Re: Official Nintendo DS Thread VIII: 65 Million Strong.. and Growing

I read that it was a real game in development, but the platform was scrapped. The article I read said the game was specifically designed around the dual-monitor capability of the PC-10 (maybe I'm getting the specific hardware wrong) and that's why it's ported to the DS.

So, I guess my assumption is that it isn't necessarily the same hardware.

Like Pixy said, the entire PlayChoice-10 back story for Dark Void Zero is fake. It's just a clever little joke.

Then I was completely duped by that article a week or so ago. Well done.

Re: Official Nintendo DS Thread VIII: 65 Million Strong.. and Growing

Yup, the back story is cute, but the top-screen capabilities of the PC-10 were EXTREMELY basic from what I remember. I think the closest thing that the PC-10 did in relation to Dark Void Zero is that Metroid showed a very basic, text-only, map of the first area of the game as a quick reference.

Again, only pointing it out as an NES Geek, the game is a lot of fun.

Okay, so I beat Dark Void Zero last night.. should last an hour or two depending on your number of continues. The game is really awesome though. My only complaint would be that they used the same boss (essentially) for all three levels. Oh, and I guess I feel it's a little wonky that they don't reset your score when you continue, so if you redo levels two or three a couple of times, your score board will fill up quickly (this also kills some replayability in eliminating the reward for finishing without continuing, etc.) Also, I think a few little achievements or minor unlockables or something could have increased replayability a bit, even for a short game, a couple items like this should have been easy to implement. But, all in all, it's a well earned $5.

Aye, and I already restarted it on Hard Mode.

I've been thinking of using some of the 700 points I've had in my DSi account for almost a year on Dark Void Zero. Guess I will. Thanks Pixy.

Shiren the Wanderer 4, comes out in Japan next week.

Now that Atlus is publishing and not Sega, I think we have a better chance of seeing this one come out here. I would expect them to just skip on Shiren DS2 and move on to this, but in a dream world, they would put both of them out over here.

I want a new Shiren so bad.
