This is excellent news. All 3 are must-buys.

I saw this thread and thought Pixy returned. :(

Bumping (still no Pixy) because this has finally launched! Will be picking up my copy at BB on the way home and tearing into Chapter 1 during the girls' gymnastics practice tonight.
Anybody else playing? |
I picked it up but only tried it briefly before coming back to work. The graphics looks pretty bland after playing the FFIV remake but it's classic DQ. Now I have to find the 60-100 hours to put into it.
|
DQ4 shouldn't take 60 hours to get through. Not like DQ7. It's a NES era RPG. Even with the extra chapter content I doubt you'll crack 40.
I know people say DQ takes a lot of level grinding, but I never found that to be the case with DQ4. There's normally only one or two points you really need to level grind in each chapter, and you really only need a few levels...not hardcore leveling. It helps with DQ that when you die you get revived with half gold, levels intact - so you can try something, and if you're too low level, you die and you keep your levels and you can try again. If you haven't played the game yet you might not even need to do it - I know DW4 like the back of my hand so I tend to go straight to where I need to go without wandering too much - which means a little leveling here and there. My copy is enroute from Amazon via Prime scheduled for delivery tomorrow. Yay! |
I thought this got canceled, I guess not.

Get a $10 gift card if you pick it up at Circuit City. First time I've been in that store in months.
Unfortunately, this is still sitting behind Etrian Odyssey 2 in my queue, and I have a ways to go in that game... |
I bought this for my wife yesterday. She's already logged about 5 hours in and is loving it. She says it's very similar to the original DQIV, which she loved as well (she said it's her favorite). I haven't had the chance to crack into it yet, figured I'd let her have a go first :)
|
Finishing up Tales of Vesperia tonight so I can start on this. Hope they'll release part V and VI over here as well.
|
I ordered DQIV on Amazon with free shipping and I'm still waiting for it. I can't wait till I get my hands on it. I guess I'll have to kill time with Viva Pinata.
|
I haven't played a DQ game since the original cart for the NES way back when. I remember wandering around trying to fight gold monsters so I could get enough cash to buy the magic healing armor. Good times. I'll have to pick this up.

Anytime someone mentions VP, my eyes instantly go to my name in it and I get all happy. Especially if it's a fine lady that plays DQ :eyebrow: Then I realize it wasn't directed towards me and I go back to my corner of sadness :(

Ok, I broke my pact with EO2 and started this up last night, making it through the first chapter in about an hour. I'm so happy that they changed the difficulty in the DQ remakes (including the GB ones). I'm sure some purists aren't happy, but I'm glad that I don't have to grind for hours on end just to be able to survive. I remember when the GBC Dragon Quest 1&2 came out, and the first game was so much more pleasant to play.
I didn't realize that you could rotate the environments with the shoulder buttons until I got to the second chapter... Apparently, they took out the "party talk" feature... there's a big fuss in CAG over it. Doesn't affect the core gameplay, so I'm ok with it, especially if the extra translating would have delayed this even more. Am I the only one who thinks that the menu setup is odd? The Equip option, which you'd think is pretty important, is hidden under another menu. |
So far, it's DQ4. It is indeed a little easier - I just finished chapter 2 and my characters were level 11 - Brey (duh...whatever his name is now) didn't even have the Blizzard spell. That NEVER happened on the original...you really needed it to get through the tower. I think they buffed character level bonuses a bit and there's a bit more gold flying around so weapons and armor are easier to get.
And I certainly didn't finish the Tourney with Alena on the first try like I did this time. Still, I got wiped out twice going through the Birdsong Nectar tower. That's 1 more time than I died during all of FFX. And I tried to take the boss at the first town at Level 2 and got smacked down hard. So there's still enough difficulty that you can't get sloppy. I'm on Chapter 3 now. |
I'm near the end of chapter 2 right now. Anybody got any tips on how to rake in the chips over at the casino? Would love to get those items as early as possible.

In DW4 the best bet was playing Poker for 100 coins and doing your best to double-up over and over again. You could net thousands of coins that way...it just took a long time. In Chapter 2 now it looks like they've changed the Casino items, they are different in Chapter 2 than Chapter 5...and you can only bet 10 coins at the Casino, which makes it tougher to get anywhere in Ch2. Coins are still cheaper in Chapter 2 I think than they are in Chapter 5 so it might pay to just money grind a bit and buy coins, and do your gambling in Ch5. It might pay more to try your hand at the monster arena. I didn't have the patience for it, I finished Chapter 2 at level 11 (the game is definitely a little easier now) and I'm on to Chapter 3. You can do some crazy money schemes with Taloon's shop, I'll probably worry about it at the end of Ch3. |
Picked this up yesterday, just starting Chapter 2 now.

Quick question: Does a Seed of XYZ give you a permanent boost to XYZ or just a temporary one? In other words, should I be using them as soon as I find them or saving them until I'm in a tight spot?
|
They are permanent boosts. I tend to save them until I need them anyway, like someone is lagging behind or just needs more power. I'm also trying not to use them in the stand-alone chapters and wait until I have a large pool of seeds to use on the entire party.
