MGS Essential Collection

I just found out about this today when I was offered to reserve it at EB. All I could find on it was the following:

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/849/849861p1.html

The clerk at the store said the version of MGS in this collection would be a redesigned one (a'la MGS: Twin Snakes for the GameCube) but I see no such mention here. Is this just the PS1 version included or are they retooling the first game for the PS2?

It's not a redesign like the Twin Snakes. The MGS included in the collection are the 2 ps1 cds repackaged in a dvd case with new artwork. This means that you will need a ps1 memory card in order to save the game. If you have a ps3, I believe you can make virtual memory cards to act like ps1 memory cards. If you have a ps2, you need a ps1 memory card. I hope this helps.

Two things.

1) The Twin Snakes was developed by Silicon Knights. Kojima oversaw the project, but had little to no direct input on it.

2) Because The Twin Snakes was built with the Gamecube architecture in mind, it would require some extensive code rewriting to get it running on the PS2 hardware. I don't see Konami spending that much time and effort on a console that is essentially dead now with most of the audience already moved on to the the next-gen platforms. This is just a quick job for some easy money.

Thanks N0treDom and taffer. You both confirmed what I thought. This set is definitely not for me as I already have the PS1 version of Metal Gear Solid. The only think tempting me was the promise of a retooled version of the first.

I know Kojima really didn't have much of a hand in MGS: Twin Snakes but the clerk made it seem as if this collection was to include a version of MGS1 with the graphics engine of either MGS2 or MGS3. Since that's not the case, my money will be better spent on Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters.

Definitely interested in this, as I only have Twin Snakes for the GameCube. Great deal too...

Yeah I reserved 2 of these babies about a month ago. 1 to play and 1 to hopefully ebay like the last SE Metal Gear for $150 :)

I'm sure I heard somewhere that, although the version of MGS1 is essentially the same as the PS1 game, it is actually running as a PS2 game. Therefore it works as a PS2 game and you can use PS2 memory cards etc. Maybe it was on 1UP Yours that I heard this..

JohnSlider 03-08-08 08:45 AM

Does anybody know if this will be compatible with the PS3 80GB system that will be released with MGS4?

dvd182 03-10-08 09:05 AM

It will be.

The other big issue with this set is that the Subsistence (MGS3) portion does not appear to include the second disc with the extras. This isn't such a big deal for MGS3 online, as the online servers are no longer active, but it would have been nice to have the MSX versions of MG1 and MG2.

I think the news of MGS1 being a PS2 disc was refuted, but I'm not positive.

They recently confirmed that MGS1 is the EXACT same game. It is shipping on 2 PS1 discs, just like it did when it was first released. Pretty lame if you ask me...

Sorry for the misinformation.

Well i purchased this set yesterday. I had lost my old ps1 metal gear solid and Sons of liberty was preety scratched up. Kinda pissed that the second and third disc are not on mgs3 since i dont own substance. Anyways, It's still a good deal. $30 for 3 new discs. I've been playing a lot of Sons of liberty. I havent played this game in so long. Great game but I wanna kill that stupid Raiden pussy and his whiny ass girlfriend :johnwoo:

Wow, the average price on e bay is $10-$15. Guess you must have sold it to the right person… ;)

bluetoast 04-01-08 08:51 AM

Bought this a week or so ago, almost done with MGS1, can't wait to start 2.

Is this collection worth picking up? I already have all three games and was wondering if this had improved graphics for MGS1 or any kind of bonus material.

MGS1 is the exact same as the PSX original, so it's a push there.

If you only have the original versions of MGS2 and MGS3, it might be worth it for the Substance and (limited) Subsistence extras, but only if you are a big MGS fan.

I was faced with the same choice and went with it, because it's only $30 and is a nice little set.

Ocelot 04-02-08 09:37 AM

It's $30, what can go wrong? Not to mention i don't have any of the titles for the PS2. Only played MGS1 for thePSX, but i don't know where the disc went... Will be picking it up for $10 new ;)
