Codemasters-"Grid" (racing)

Hey

I've been a fan of Codemasters when they came out with "DiRt" last year. Well they've got another in the works called "Grind" scheduled for Summer 08'. The web site for it is just up and while not a lot it has a movie and stills. For the PS3, 360, DS and Windows

Looks pretty sweet. I wonder how it will compare to Gran Turismo 5 and Forza.

PS. I think you meant to call it "Grid".

McHawkson 02-29-08 09:41 PM

Awesome.... When it releases, I will have to make decision on what platform I should buy for... 360 with Microsoft Racing wheel or PC with Logitech G25.

astrochimp 03-01-08 02:00 PM

This is certainly one i will be keeping my eye on.Im a big racing game fan and as long as its got enough "sim" in it and not like PGR then i will most likely be buying it.

McHawkson 03-03-08 12:11 PM

I don't know how sim will it be - DiRT seems more arcade than simulation - it's likely that Grid would be similar with DiRT gameplay. I enjoyed DiRT lot and hope they would use same with Grid.

Played the new Grid demo last night with a few fellow talkers and pretty fun. I know there will no all perfect race game to satisfy everyone but this seems to have a nice blend of arcade and realism.

For those into a endless amount of cars with every imaginable paint job, add on and extreme tuneups need not bother. No pit stops, no weather conditions, no mega 300 car garages, no insane tuneups, no tutorial or "Hand Holding" either. As Codemasters states is "All about Race", jump in and go.

There's a small but good deal of info at IGN UK (May 8th) about some parts of the game and how it works. While not 300 cars the 50 car list is actually "real" cars. The damage physics look really good just like they did in "DiRT" but they refined them a bit more. The Replay mode is really nice but it's "Flashback" is even better. One cool feature is having your own Team logo/name, number and colors/pattern and then every car you get will have it.

I like the demo although i was hoping it would be more towards the Forza side then the PGR side but it is fun and it seems to run very smoothly unlike Dirt which had some horrible slowdown in some of the multi car races. At this point im probably 50/50 on buying it.

edit-like it better after playing the demo on Live tonight, pretty fun

I absolutely love GT racing. If you do too, watch FIA GT Championship, American Le Mans, Rolex Sports Car Series, and DTM.

That said, I will certainly watch this game as it goes through development. The Le Mans circuit is great, but I would also like to see the Nordschleife (Nurburgring) which is my favorite.

I don't care too much for drift style racing, though it is continuing to grow in popularity. I just wish the developers would save that style of racing for another game.

porieux 05-12-08 11:57 PM

Seems like a cool game but I really really suck at the event with the BMWs.

astrochimp 06-04-08 11:30 PM

Anyone get this yet? I didnt look today and i think its the 5th here for release so i will check tomorrow.I liked the demo even though its more arcadey then what i like for a racing game its still a lot of fun.Hopin' the open wheels will be also fun to drive.

boredsilly 06-05-08 06:42 AM

I played the demo just the other day and thought it was really fun. I'm not pressed for a new game right now, so I'll probably pick this up down the road, but I look forward to playing it.

Hell, I completely missed out on Dirt, so I think I might go back and play that first.

Centurion 06-05-08 09:50 AM

Though this title is getting great reviews, I'm going to pass on it for now.
The announcement of losing the Ferrari license was a deal breaker along with the omission of the Nordschleife track.

I'll have to wait until next year if there ever is going to be a Forza Motorsport 3.

Is this game more sim-ish or arcade-ish?

Got it today. Its certainly arcadey and not even "simish" in the way the previous Codemasters Race Drivers games were which to me is somewhat disappointing but then again i knew that from the demo. That being said its quite fun to play and lotsa different types of racing.I think playing on Live will be fun and give the game some good life along with the career challenges like in Dirt.Oh and it looks pretty great too.

Calico 06-06-08 12:34 AM

It seems to be trying to ride the line between sim and arcade, more towards a PGR style game. From the demo, the controls seemed too squirrely though, I was slipping all over.

Rival11 06-17-08 11:46 AM

I hear a lot of people complaining about the "slipping" - to me this game is more of a sim style racer even though it's no presented that way. It's also what attracts me to the game as there is a pretty steep learning curve but once you nail it - it makes the game even better.

Very suprised by this one.

The Bus 06-17-08 04:28 PM

DICE needs to make a new racer.

Goldblum 09-23-08 01:47 PM

It's definitely more sim than arcade racers like NFS or Midnight Club. You can't just plow through at almost full speed like you can in some of those games. You have to use strategy in complete the courses (Gasp).

Decker 09-23-08 04:17 PM

Picked this up yesterday at Target on clearance for $29.98. That was too good a deal to pass up.

Goldblum 09-25-08 02:26 PM

Fuck. Wish I had checked Target.

So, it's automatically label it as "simulation" racing? I have played many, many racing games, I viewed GRID as arcade racing. It has much similar feeling as DiRT which is also arcade.

Forza 2 is semi-simulation. NASCAR 2009 (EA) is like simulation, but not true one. rFactor and NR2003 probably only two racing games that are true simulation racing. IMO

murray731 09-25-08 03:12 PM

I grabbed the last copy at my local Target for $14.98.

I think most people would consider the Gran Tourismo games as simulation racers. Sony's F1 series as well.

McHawkson 09-25-08 04:10 PM

^I haven't tried those racing game - I don't have Playstation. :)

Goldblum 09-26-08 10:02 AM

When I hear "sim" I think of Gran Tourismo. I would say the driving in Grid more closely remembles that than Need 4 Speed. However, there is no doubt that Grid is definitely far more arcade than Gran Tourismo.
