My brother lives in Wisconsin. It's a shame that my party (Democrats) seems to like to shit on video games all of the time.

I was going to come and disagree with the bill, but after I read this woman's opinion I had a change of heart.

Don't they ever think this will get people to start shopping online more and possibly have a minor effect on the economy?

Taxation on internet commerce is unavoidable. We've been lucky so far, but it's only a matter of time before state and federal governments pursue this revenue stream.

You're supposed to report internet made purchases on your tax return.

But don't worry, even though most "may" report internet purchases, the government knows it's missing money that it could be taking and unfortunately they will enlist the etailers rather than relying on the peons to self-report, since everyone in politics knows the people are either untrustworthy or too stupid to take care of their own money.
I despise luxury taxes, sin taxes, and social engineering taxes. Worse than that, I despise reactionary vote-getting taxes. Especially when a core concept in the proposed tax is incorrect or at least unproven (the implication that "most gamers" are under 17).
It is ironic that the alleged party of Free Speech is so against certain forms of free speech. Unless it involves offensive pictures of religious figures, or is funded by tax dollars, many of them seek restrictions on speech that's already been judged "free" (this proposed tax, PMRC, the rumored revival of the "Fairness" doctrine, the Campaign Finance "Reform" bill [even though McCain cowrote that monstrosity] etc.) Or alternately they're just trolling for votes, which is also bad.

So, MC, do you keep tab of your internet spendings and report them on your taxes?

Oh don't worry, the People's Republic will keep him there until he decides to move on. The worst part - I live an hour from Madison in a small conservative farming community, and we somehow got lumped into his ultra-liberal Madison senate district.

Agreed. Which is why many states want to force the etailers to submit that information for you--that's the government's money you're keeping!

FWIW, whatever tax program we use automatically puts a dollar value in the 'internet purchases' field based on your net income; I usually lower it, but I do put a positive value there. I don't itemize or really think about it, I just put a figure.
