Is this really what television thinks of video games?

This is one of the worst representations I've ever seen of video games:

http://gamernode.com/news/5247-atten...ork/index.html

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bB3ir_h3VeY&rel=1&border=0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bB3ir_h3VeY&rel=1&border=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

And if you just ignore the video game aspects, just focus on the writing, acting, and overall quality of the show, it's still just as bad. Holy crap, is Life really that poor of a TV show all the time? I thought this was a horrible parody of video games in general until I realized it was an actual scene, from an actual TV show. How could anyone not only watch this show, but take it in the least bit seriously?

Meh, I'll stop right there or else I'll run the risk of this thread being moved to the TV folder.

I love it when they show kids playing video games and they still have Pac-Man and Space Invader type sound effects in the background.

Brent L 12-01-07 01:36 PM

I like when they perfectly are playing an Xbox, but they're using a PS2 controller, etc... I see that one all the time.

Flay 12-01-07 01:37 PM

I bitched about this in the Life thread that particular week. It's beyond effing stupid.

That was also the last episode of Life I watched.

UAIOE 12-01-07 01:52 PM

Was that an Excel spreadsheet inside that Prince of Persia game?

Reminds me of some crazy older guy proclaiming that all game systems run on DOS.

Panda Phil 12-01-07 01:58 PM

Well, pretty much how people who've never played a video game in their lives see them.

Just like how computer users never use a mouse.

rocketsauce 12-01-07 02:24 PM

Holy shit when that girl was miming playing the game and that douche bag saw her and had his "epiphany", that was one of the most cringe inducing moments I've had in a long time.

So if someone sees me run in place will they insert me into the Olympics?

RVP 12-01-07 03:21 PM

I always find it funny that people on TV/Movies are always pushing the buttons like crazy. Like jumping requires 25 pushes of the A button or something.

I hate that too. I also hate when it shows the player tapping all the buttons as fast as possible and in a seemingly random fashion too.

One episode of Heroes had Niki "playing" Heavenly Sword. This was long before the game came out. What she was "playing" was the E3 trailer.

Charlie's Angels had a scene with two boys playing one of the PS1 Final Fantasy games simultaneously. Final Fantasy isn't multiplayer...

PopcornTreeCt 12-01-07 03:42 PM

I thought Reign Over Me had a great representation of a video game "Shadow of the Colossus" I think it was.

cartman 12-01-07 05:34 PM

I immediately thought of that episode of life when I read the thread title . I swear whoever wrote that entire episode was on acid.

Anubis2005X 12-01-07 06:25 PM

I'll never forgive them for stupifying Prince of Persia 3. "You Died, Play Again?" WTF? "You win, advanced to level 2." So retarded... And the guy falls in a bit and doesn't bother rewinding time? So you live in your mom's basement, have a Captain Kirk uniform, AND you suck at video games...

rocketsauce 12-01-07 06:42 PM

going on stereotyping alone, that main guy was who I would have pegged as the geek

One of my biggest acting pet peeves of mine of all time. Not only do they button mash, but they steer the controller like the way they drive cars on TV. What overacting school did they go to where they learned that?

That's probably the director's doing. Watching people play video games is not the most dynamic experience.

Draven 12-02-07 12:34 AM

I often wonder why, at some point, someone doesn't raise their hand and say "this looks stupid - why don't we just use an actual video game with the correct controllers, the right game and all that jazz?"

Of course, it wouldn't be the first thing that movies didn't portray correctly.

SteelgearX 12-02-07 09:49 AM

Can't remember what movie it was right now, but they were playing Xbox games... in 1999.

Yeah, there's a scene in The 40-Year Old virgin where they're playing an Xbox (IIRC) but are using what looks like some generic N64 controller. They do show the game though - Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance.

I wonder how much of that is due to licensing costs. Perhaps they don't want to pay to use the actual controllers and sound effects.

Heavenly Sword is a button masher. I can see that being portrayed fairly accuarately.

Exactly. They tried to jazz it up a bit for the general populace and it still was terrible. Watching someone play games isn't all that riviting.

Brent L 12-02-07 06:56 PM

Then they shouldn't try to make playing video games a riveting, central part of a plot, in the first place.

Alpha Dog. I just noticed that last night.

boredsilly 12-03-07 07:45 AM

You all realize that this is the case for all sorts of things in television and movies right? They get stuff wrong all the time by mistake or on purpose to make something more entertaining. We just notice this because we're familiar with games.

UAIOE 12-03-07 01:41 PM

It's just like those "photo enhancer" programs all those cop shows seem to have now.

"Enhance and zoom in to show the persons face." -ohbfrank-

That whole series of lines felt like something out of MadTV, especially given his horrible deadpan delivery.

Legolas 12-03-07 02:03 PM

If you read Roger Ebert's website, he's been going out of his way to proclaim several times that video games are not an art form.
